So we all know Dylan, Waits, Cohen etc.
But who's the greatest singer-songwriter of our generation and why is it this dude right here?
your opinion is crazy, you should get checked.
all your reasons why not are shit
I actually agree, just thought it was impossible to think that of his songwriting. Does your opinion include Red House Painters? Medicine Bottle and Katy Song are some of the best songs I've ever heard.
The meandering, stream-of-consciousness style is part of the reason why his music is so meaningful and unique.
Like it or not, it's innovative. There's direct continuity from Guthrie to Dylan to Sun Kil Moon.
>not pic related
You're right OP. He brought out Down Colorful Hill, Rollercoaster, Ghosts of the Great Highway, Admiral Fell Promises and Benji. All fucking 10/10 albums besides maybe Admiral which is a 9/10. And all of his other ones are fucking great too. Ocean Beach, Universal Themes, the new Jesu one is surprisingly tight.
1. Joanna Newsom
2. Bill Callahan
3. John Darnielle
4. Mark Kozelek
5. Fiona Apple
6. Robin Pecknold
7. Sufjan Stevens
8. Will Oldham
9. Kristian Matsson
10. J. Tillman
Just off the top of my head that's probably how I'd rank the top ones still making music (though I'm considering people like Bob Dylan or Tom Waits as being past their prime). And remember we're talking about songwriting here, so don't sperg out that most of those make pretty run of the mill folk influenced music. That's where the best songwriters tend to congregate.
Who /okudzhava/ here?
You guys are fucking crazy if you don't think Kozelek is a great songwriter, his style might suck now but his early SKM and Red House Painters have such a consistent top notch quality from first album to at least April
Sorry guys the answer is actually Richard Dawson!
