Billy Corgan may not have been great friends with Kurt Cobain, but according to a new interview with the Independent, he respected the Nirvana frontman’s undeniable talent. “Now, he and I didn’t necessarily get along,” Corgan said, “but I like to sing his praises, because he really was that talented.” The Smashing Pumpkins leader also made sure to mention that he and Cobain were operating, creatively, on more or less the same level. “In the purest sense of the word, we were competitors,” he said. “He and I were the top two scribes, and everybody else was a distant third.”
>>62049492 you know last year he did some live show of some 9 hour long concept performance based on Siddartha? honestly, I legitimately wanted to see this. It sounded like it might hit that sweet spot between bugfuck insane and actually interesting.
Billy Corgan, who is best known for his blog, www.peopleandtheircars.com, and to real fans, for his band, Smashing Pumpkins, is now a father. Alternative Nation reports that the 48-year-old musician’s longtime girlfriend, Chloe Mendel, gave birth to little Augustus Juppiter, the couple’s first son, on November 16. SPIN welcomes the newest member of Corgan’s patch.
>>62057222 It will be better than Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie combined. A commercially and artistically succesful masterwork that revives alt rock at its possible finest and makes Billy circa 2016 more relevant than he was at his peak in the 90s.
>>62056958 to be fair early 90s smashing pumpkins were as good as nirvana. its hard to remember that smashing pumpkins were actually a decent band since the last 3 albums have been complete and utter shit.
the real issue here is that corgan's ultra inflated ego has struck again. the dude can't just compliment nirvana without pumping his own tires.
there's a reason why he's strongly disliked by other musicians
>>62059030 In my book, Siamese Dream blew anything Nirvana did out of the water, but that's just my personal taste. Gish might be the Pumpkin's most underrated record and while Mellon Collie has a shitton of filler and is overproduced it's still great. Even that b-side/outtakes compilation they released in between Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream is pretty good. Adore's still great, but after that Billy went batshit insane. He might have been one of the greatest and incredibly talented but he's too fed up on his ego to actually act on it. He was a genius and he's a prick now, is what I'm trying to say.
>>62059903 billy corgan was an arse back then too. remember when he threw a hissy fit when pavement was playing at the same festival as him? billy just had the benefit of not having the internet to voice every dumb idea he had. he also was releasing good music which makes people much more forgiving of his behavior (and I'll agree with you gish-adore were great and I like that run of albums better than nirvanas)
now billy is showing the world he's a bigot, that hes a paranoid conspiracy theorist. he seems bitter at every other band that is still successful ("I piss on Radiohead!"), he gets mad at his fans for not liking his new music and he can never keep a bandmate for longer than a year with some sort of falling out
a lot of artists have publicly said something negative about billy. nick cave, sonic youth, pavement, slint, courtney love off the top of my head
>>62060156 Just out of curiosity, can you tell me more about Billy being a conspiracy theorist? Is he like that rapper from yesterday that came out as a Flat Earth nutjob? Also, what did Nick Cave said about Billy Corgan? I admire both of them greatly and it just sparks my curiosity.
>>62059903 I got some hope when he made Oceania that he would not let his ego get in the way, but he did an aboutface with OH NO ONE BOUGHT OCEANIA, WELL THAT MEANS EVERYONE WANTS RADIO ROCK, SO I'LL MAKE RADIO ROCK SONGS THAT ARE SHORT AND CATCHY
I wish I was kidding, but he literally said that during the press tour for Elegy, and now he keeps assuming more and more about what the future holds, instead of having a 3rd party look at the current situation.
Billy at his best, disregarding his anti-album shit: https://youtu.be/zd0mbIUUdng?t=3m30s

>>62053344 >“He and I were the top two scribes, and everybody else was a distant third.”
What a piece of garbage to speak so highly of himself like that. What about Alic In Chains? Pearl Jam? Soundgarden? Even STP. I'm pretty sure Smashing Pumpkins are always going to be remembered after bands like that.
>>62061553 Wrong. The Smashing Pumpkins outsold Alice in Chains, Soundgrarden and STP. Mellon Collie sold well over 20million records which is pretty incredible for a double album. They were pretty much the biggest band in the 90s after Nirvana.
Pearl Jam might have been more popular though. I'm not entirely sure.
>>62061648 The Smashing Pumpkins would be way better regarded if they had disbanded forever after Adore, or after Mellon Collie, if you're a purist. But then you have Billy throwing insane shit fits all over the place and whoring out the Pumpkins' name with gruesomely bad music.
He should've killed himself in 2000, just to keep his legacy unblemished, but even so he would've drawn a lot of Cobain comparisons.
>>62062442 Dave Pajo (Slint guitarist) was in Zwan with Billy Corgan. Billy Corgan hates Pajo and Matt Sweeny (Chavez). Pajo made fun of him in an interview:
>When I was in Zwan, Billy got so mad at me when he found out I didn't know any Smashing Pumpkins songs. He would say, "You haven't heard '1979'?" But I didn't listen to any of that shit when it was breaking. Delta blues was way more exciting to me than the Pumpkins and that whiny voice. [Laughs.] I knew that one "rat in a cage" lyric, but that was the only Pumpkins I could recognize for the longest time. But, yeah, Billy would get really mad about that: "How can you not know 'Tonight, Tonight'?" [Laughs.]
AVC: But Zwan didn't even play Smashing Pumpkins songs, right?
DP: No! But that's one of the reasons I initially liked the guy—he was so arrogant, it cracked me up. He would constantly bring up the fact that he sold 25 million records, or that his hit song was played at the Super Bowl or something. It just made me laugh. You know that character Alan Partridge, the one Steve Coogan played? Billy reminds me of Alan Partridge if he'd made a hit record. But after a while, the joke wears off.
VC: Do you think reverting to metal was also a reaction against your experience in Zwan?
DP: Yeah. Zwan really did put a sour taste in my mouth, as far as music goes. I don't want to talk too much shit about Billy, but… He really does know how to beat the sound and life out of music.
>>62062741 Adore was fine. It didn't reach the commercial success of Mellon Collie but it was well received. Unfortunately Billy gets upset when his records don't sell 20 million copies. That's why he tried to make a "pop" album after Oceania sold poorly. Dude just wants to be as popular as humanly possible.
Machina would have been a good final album if his ego wasn't in overdrive. There's an albums worth of decent material between Machina 1/2, but we don't need 3 different versions of shitty songs like Heavy Metal Machine. The production choices were terrible too and Billy was trying to hard to recapture past magic. Try Try Try was the third time Billy made 1979. (Perfect was another 1979 clone).
>>62063091 once an artist gets big his head goes up his own arse and it all turns to shit. melon collie was his will to fame. his desire to be recognized. sorta like when a guy gets jacked to fuck a girl then marries her and the beer gut returns. all turns to shit
Saw the Pumpkins in Atlanta. They were actually really good, way better than the shit I was expecting. Sounded great and Billy interacted with the audience way more than I thought he would. He even went on a rant about kudzu and kept mispronouncing it as 'kudzo'.
