Plebs think their a pleb band
INB4 Panda looks like he's about to cast a spell
nice try Rolling Stone magazine
>I liked her first two albums, but Born This Way was too weird/gay
Animal Collective are just pop songs labelled as experimental. The band which plebs who think they are patrician listen to.
>>ZOMG Stockhausen lel how super-duper eclectic am I?
Spotted the pleb.
>implying it takes a man of considerable intelligence to appreciate Stocky
Of course Animal Collective are pop songs labelled as experimental but you can't find a band that sounds notably similar to them can you?
Agreed. Plebs get turned off by her voice, there's no other justifiable reason to dislike her.
They're alright but you can definitely dislike them and not be pleb.
people who can't see past the indie "I'M SO WEIRD XD" production on this album to see it's basically just a stupid country album with some extra bells and whistles
>Mozart is pleb.
>Modern classical is the only good classical.
Honestly I tried to like it man. I tried to like it so hard, but there's nothing interesting about it for me. There's the objective elements I could perhaps put aside to a certain extent if I thought she had an ounce of conviction or soul or purpose but she doesn't.
It's like a really slow chamber folk Dream Theater.
>if I thought she had an ounce of conviction or soul or purpose but she doesn't.
I hate this fucking lazy criticism. Not only could it apply to literally anything, it's the kind of thing you might read on ultimate guitar forums or something when they explain why their favourite metal band is better than whatever's in the charts at the moment, especially electronic music.
>"Where is muh soul? Muh PASSION? Why aren't I being literally slapped in the face with catharsis???"
I don't see the comparison.
If you think her music is "wanky" or "meandering" I'm afraid you just aren't very good at listening. That's exactly why she's very effective at filtering out plebeians. I can't imagine anyone who's actually studied music or poetry thinking any of these things about Joanna Newsom.
>I can't imagine anyone who's actually studied music ... thinking any of these things about Joanna Newsom.
conservatorium student here, the "tacky neoclassical arrangements" comment was mine.
Look, I don't know how else to put it. Her string arrangements put me off like the worse end of Sufjan Stevens' repertoire. Her voice is ill-fiiting and although she tries to put on her best "yokel folkel, I'm from derr old cuntry" accent, it comes off as goofy and even less appropriate. Her songs have no means of justifying their length, and it's less the fact that I'm being, as you so eloquently put it:
>being literally slapped in the face with catharsis
It's more that catharsis, or enjoyment, or even interest, never comes.
lmao did you even listen to Carrie and Lowell? The instrumentation is exactly the same throughout and the lyrics don't even come close to touching MEM which is Joanna's weakest album
I hardly listen to either and even I can tell the difference
Her lyrics are awful and all the same, faux-fantasy bullshit with as much purple-prose as she can get. The instrumentation is literally the same all throughout Ys apart from Sawdust and Diamonds
except it is. look up the features for illinois and the features for Ys and enjoy the fact that sufjan essentially did most of it on his own. His conceptual project, whereas joanna hacksom had every fucking skipper in the business working on Ys
>Her songs have no means of justifying their length
Completely untrue. Not only do most of her longer songs consist of several contrasting sections linked by a common musical or lyrical theme, she excels at slow, gradual development as well. Take the title track of HOOM, for example, the way the melody in the middle section gradually mutates and increases in intensity as it goes along, becoming more and more angular and chromatic before it eventually transitions into the ending with the layered vocal harmonies, perfectly relieving all the tension that was built up to that point.
Anyone who says her lyrics are awful clearly has never actually listened to Joanna's lyrics
>implying "real", simpler lyrics make an artist better than another
>same all throughout Ys
confirmed for never actually listening to Ys
>more people for production and engineering = bad
lmao okay bud
>he is immensely more talented than Joanna
Obviously not. Joanna is a much better songwriter.
Congratulations, you figured out how to casually dismiss any piece of writing that uses words with more than four syllables without actually providing any kind of substantial criticism.
Fuck off back to /lit/ you pointless anti-intellectual.
Once again I feel like I'm on ultimate guitar forums arguing with 14-year-olds. I don't care how many instruments Suffy played. Illinois is a mediocre album whereas Ys is not.
>enjoy the fact that sufjan essentially did most of it on his own. His conceptual project, whereas joanna hacksom had every fucking skipper in the business working on Ys
I'm sorry English isn't your first language but please try to study more before entering an English dominated image site.
it wasn't my argument it was some other guy's argument but the autist i was talking to didn't understand what he was saying and i felt the need to tell him how retarded he was because that's why we're all on /mu/ isn't it?
>Anyone who says her lyrics are awful clearly has never actually listened to Joanna's lyrics
Her lyrics aren't terrible but if you disregard purple-prose for valid criticism you're delusional. The lyrics are hard to follow and refusing to own up to it doesn't make you superior to anyone else.
Its legitimately the best pop album of the decade
I'm Not joking or baiting
I have not found a single pop album I prefer
Maybe ids only bc I'm not really into pop sop haven't heard enough
