Second for a question. I'm looking at starting a solo project and I'm looking for advice on it. The only thing I'm confident on is vocals, been doing them for a few years now. Starting to learn guitar, so I was thinking doing blackened crusty doomy sludgy stuff so it's not too fast or complex, and I have an excuse for keeping it lo-fi, and then maybe sampling drums. I want to make it original and interesting though, so I'm looking for advice on how to do that. Thoughts?

Alright, all memes and shit aside, lemme explain you why Advaita's Sun of Earth is superior to Liturgy's The Ark Work in spite of its clumsier, cheaper production:

The Ark Work has almost no bass lines. This prevents it from achieving the solemnity and majesty it strives for. Sun of Earth has much more range. It may sound stupid but solemnity often relies simply on having some lower tones in your composition. Also it helps making the experience less claustrophobic and cluttered.

Secondly, there's no vocals on Sun of Earth, whereas The Ark Work had HHH's nasal, bored-to-death boyish vocals polluting it and constantly breaking the rapturous and dignified flow he was trying to create.

And thirdly Sun of Earth puts a lot less emphasis on the electronic nature of its arrangements. This helps it feel more like a journey to the higher planes, than like a display of its creator's proficiency with a DAW. Unlike the Ark Work.

I'm sure many of those things have more to do with Advaita's fear of fucking things up than they have to do with a desire to improve upon the Transcendental BM formula.

But the result is there. Sun of Earth feels more dignified and solemn, and more magical and beautiful as a result. It feels like an amateurish but genuine effort to create a work of art for its own sake, than like an ostentatious display of skills and ideas.

Actually yeah I'm trying to promote Advaita.
I do have something to gain by doing that: I'm hoping that if more people recognize Advaita as a better alternative to Liturgy, maybe Liturgy will improve its output instead of going further and further up its own ass, and finally create something that's not bogged down by silly ideas and clumsy execution.

So when is someone going to break through and finally make the first Glam Slam band?
>>
>>61993693
True

It usually goes like
>Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica
>Bit more heavier with Slayer and Megadeth
>Pantera
>Pantera opens gates to Slipknot, SOAD, Avenged Sevenfold, Korn

From there idk, but I feel like that's a really common progression these days. For me, my friend in middle school showed me Exodus and Sepultura, and I listened exclusively only to old thrash and OSDM.

>willfully admitting to liking something accessible

>>

>>61993497
it serves the purpose that people unused to metal think metal is supposed to serve - heaviness. "hipsters" tend to disdain displays of technicality and stoner/sludge/doom is the sort of metal that's least reliant on that in general so it's natural they gravitate towards it. also as someone said, aside from trad it's the most rockish sort of metal so it's easier to have context for it if the heaviest thing you're used to is Alice in Chains and you still have an aversion to harsh vocals

Is there such thing as not shit Slam Metal? Don't really want to Google "Good Slam Metal" because I know there will be some pretty autistic results. New to genre so I really have no expectations besides know the genre has the stereotype of not being music.

I think the only thing I can give you credit for are the transitions which could have been handled better. This is a common problem with younger prog bands.

I'd hardly call any of it whiplash inducing. The moods within each song go right along with events in the concept, after all it is a concept album. It does a good job of conveying emotion from the perspective of multiple characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov0JMV_-FqI

Makes me think of late summer evenings going into fall. Still swimming and hanging out with friends but the qt you had your eye on got a new bf before you made your move. You found out at the summer end lake party and you ride back home at dusk in the back of your friends pick up truck a little drunk from beer the cool older guys brought. You feel like you wasted your summer now and regret not making your move sooner but she probably wouldnt have you anyway. As you hit the city lights and realize summer is over. No more nights at the lake, no more pool parties at Tray's parents' place with scantly clad female classmates. You graduate this coming year. You missed out on young love.

It really is gay shit for normies in high school

the part in spark of the archon where they suddenly put in a bombastic symphonic climax out of nowhere doesn't seem like whiplash to you? they just noodle around with some quiet jazzy crap (by the way the jazz fusion portions of the album are so, so bland and cliche) and then all of a sudden you're in Danny Elfman-land.

My biggest problem is the literalist way they handle the concept. I think concept albums should show, not tell, and Quiet World seem to prefer having the music directly follow the plot like a movie score, in a really literalist way.

Also, the vocals are trying way, way too hard to be Mike Patton.

when all the styles never coalesce into a holistically sound entity, yeah, it's jumbled. You can make eclectic music and still have a track revolve around a consistent set of elements. Yes and Gentle Giant did this. NC don't do this. There's that stupid Seinfeld bass solo, the sax solo, some of the synth bits, they sound like they were just slapped in out of nowhere.

Why is it that blackgaze bands are always like barely "black" at all? I can see the blackness in Deafheaven or the first couple Lantlos albums, but in the later Lantlos albums, for example, it's just kinda boring spacey post-rock.
>>
>>61998497
It's just becoming its own genre
>>
>>61998497
because they're really just shoegaze bands using black stylings
black metal already had enough of the hypnotic, slightly ethereal stuff it didn't need this, plus we got atmoshit

also because it's difficult, musically to have the attitude and force of both genres, which are really very different

>without phil and pantera dir en grey may not have existed
Killing two birds with one stone, I like it.

I honestly thought I would hate or not understand them at first, but their music just completely sucks you in and makes you zone out for hours if you let it. The muffled riffs they produce are wicked dank. Even though most of the riffs are chugs, it works out really well.

also, 3.14 is the GOAT spoopy melody, it really makes you feel like you are in a haunted house or graveyard or some shit

Everything about who they are feels forced. They don't feel like a progressive rock band who ended up mixing elements from other genres into their music, they feel like a couple of guys who sat down and made a checklist of what genres they needed to incorporate. Tell me, if you isolated the jazzy parts and the progressive rock parts, would any of them feel good as when you haphazardly mix them all in all? They know this just like their seniors at BTBAM, they might be talented but this proficiency in skill ends up driving out emotion and replacing it with technical flourishes. Because they can't write anything interesting in one genre, they need to combine as many as they can, throwing ideas at the wall and hoping something sticks.

>still won't put Agoraphobic Nosebleed on because "hurr hurr muh mindless guitars"
Never mind the fact that Agoraphobic Nosebleeds riffs are pretty technical and they branch out into thrash, death and sludge. Plus the side project rule, fuck, at this point Pig Destroyer is the side project and Pig Destroyer is less metal sounding anyways.

I've always basically hated rock operas and theater in general so, you know, subjectivity. I can't deny that that sort of turns me off to the possibility of liking their music to begin with but I think it fails pretty hard at being actually good prog metal.

i do think that dynamism isn't an inherently positive or negative trait, but it's very easy to do it poorly and lots of bands fuck up with that. You can have a lot of good ideas, but if you don't assemble them well it just sounds bad. In NC's case it seems like they wrote the narrative first and just constructed music to accompany it, so the assembly is always done with narrative appropriateness in context rather than what actually works out on a macro scale.

I'll again point out how incredibly, incredibly lame those filler "jazz" bits are by the way. It's that sort of shit that makes me knee-jerk about the use of jazz influence in prog metal, it's blatantly contentless but the listeners with think it's cool because it sounds like a convincing impersonation of a genre they don't actually know about and don't care to learn about (because prog metal fans are generally very narrow-minded people despite their supposed love of eclecticism)
