I think it's great because even though Smith saw the whole thing, lyrically speaking, as not really serious, it can be interpreted in many different ways.

He later reflected on the opening line of one hundred years saying that despite him having written the lyrics kind of ironically, he was a real nihilistic guy at the time and believed that

Musically it's just very enjoyable for me, but I think the utter gloom and bleakness that the entire thing conveys is where the true beauty of it lies.

I've always loved it, but there is a lot of bias for the emotional bit as when I got really drunk for the first time, as a lad of 14, I listened to this after barfing my brains out and going to bed. (I had been drinking because I wanted to die and thought drinking would make me feel better kek)

But yeah emotionally and musically it's a top tier record for me.

Because in the wake of Ian Curtis' death, pressure was set entirely upon The Cure to carry on the Joy Division sound as heads of the post-punk depression movement. Also, coming up was Robert Smith's 27th birthday and the entire '27'club of dead celebrities was becoming a thing, and alot of people were speculating whether or not Robert Smith would kill himself just like Ian Curtis did.

Which, you can't blame the culture & media for thinking because Smith was beginning to have his hair all crazy in his trademark style and smear makeup on his face, and reportedly he was depressed as all fuck. On top of all this attention and speculation he was stressed out of his mind from all the pressure set upon himself and the band.

Pressure makes a diamond, and out came the most grim, despondent, depressing album I've ever heard.

I agree, there are some non-depressing songs on both of the others, whereas on pornography the only one I'd say isn't gloomy as fuck is the Hanging Garden.

Overall I'd say Pornography is just a very dark album, whereas I'd say that for Faith and Seventeen Seconds they are just very cold albums.

It defined the gothic bleakness that the band could carry out; the grinding bass, the screeching guitars, the oppressive lyrics, aside from JD, I think only And Also The Trees, and early Xymox/Pieter Nooten could match that level of gloom.
