Of course

I wish I had now

The fact that loud music causes damage to your ears is a lie.

Yeah bring em, and especially use them if it feels loud

Indeed...

I also watch movies with sunglasses on

Y
First time i went to a gig the sound was so fucking painful i went to the very back
>>
Obviously depends on the gig.

Might as well take them.

Use cotton instead. Want it to be just a little more quiet? Use a little cotton.
>>
>>61968454
or musicians ear plugs silly
>>
depends on the band/venue but usually it's helpful. wish i had worn them when i was in my metal phase a few years ago, sound guys never knew what they were doing and shit was always just a wall of shitty noise.

Just have tp in your pocket, then you can tear off a piece, wad it up and get it wet, then put it in your ear. No joke - easy and actually really effective
>>
They were handing out ones at the Swans show I went to so I just put them in. After a while, I took them out because I thought it was fine and it fucking hurt. I guess it depends on the gig.

Of course. Eliminates square wave contamination and increases sound quality while also protecting your hearing.
>>
i always bring but i don't always use
>>
>>61968769
>>61968883
To clarify, you dont jam it in your ear. You get a little "disc" of wet tp and it forms a perfect seal over the ear canal
>>
what the fuck? NO

if it's too loud then stand further away from the speaker
>>
I've never worn them, so this question is going to sound stupid, but doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of going to see/hear a live performance? Won't it just make everything sound muffled and shit?

>>61968477
why does no one know what these are here?

There are certain types of earplugs specifically for concerts that, instead of muffling the sound, pretty much just lower the volume.

Only edgy kids say no.

They're the ones you see plugging their ears with their fingers halfway through the first song.

I saw Swans twice on the last tour. Standing in line outside the venue in CT workers started handing out earplugs.

A lot of younger people were laughing and saying how lame it was to wear earplugs at the show.

Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu opened with a thirty minute long harsh noise piece. I saw the group of kids walk in five minutes into it, then immediately covered their ears and walked back outside.

After Jamie they came back in with tissues stuffed into their ears because they through away their earplugs.

I was wearing earpeace plugs that have an extra piece that you can put in the plugs for stronger noise reduction. I was standing right in front of Norman Westberg during the set, and even with the extra noise protection my ears were still ringing for over a day after the show.

If I wasn't wearing them my hearing would have been permanently damaged.

Be smart, don't be a fag.
>>
>>61969739
Here's a video of the set he performed. This isn't at the show I went to, but it's the same thing.

It was a high pitched ringing noise at first, like a mosquito. Then he increased the volume until it started to distort. Just that sound itself felt like it was popping my eardrums.

With earplugs you can actually hear the individual parts and not a horrible wall of noise.
>>
A few months ago I went to see GYBE and forgot to bring earplugs. Front row and all.
Yeah, don't be dumb and bring them with you just in case. I couldn't hear properly for about 2 hours afterward (Piss Crowns did it for me), and that night I could barely sleep because I could hear like 4 different pitches of ringing in my ears, which of course kept going for the next couple of days.
>>
>>61968862

>>
>>61968346
Tuned earplugs specifically. I like the v-moda faders a lot for gigs.
>>
Y

I like my hearing, and good ear plugs make it easier to hear the music
>>
>>61968346
Yes, both in the audience and on stage because

>Lets you make out the sounds more clearly, less clusterfucky

>Protects your hearing obviously
>>
>>61969119
lel. proper earplugs make the sound much clearer. they take out all the high frequency wash and everything becomes much clearer and not ear damaging loud
>>
>>61968430
Just ask Danny Elfman. Oh wait he can't play live Boingo sets because he was losing his hearing...
>>
Y

Especially if you're a producer
>>
Been waiting for a thread like that because I always wear those shitty free plugs at the start of concerts and they muffle horribly so I take them out.
Can you guys recommend me some earplugs that just reduce the volume kind of without losing too much sound?
>>
>>61968346
Just wear them for the opener so your ears are pure and ready for the main show.

>>61973328
Just look up musicians ear plugs and pick the highest rated thing in your price range. I bought mine at Sam Ash for $20 and they work great.
>>
>>61973141

Go to a guitar/music store and buy some earplugs. They usually come with a case. If theyre too expensive you can buy bulk pairs from places like Home Depot.
>>
>>61972662
I use Earpiece (I bought the Noisia ones back when I used to be an EDM fan), and they seem alright.

Surprisingly, though, Godspeed You! Black Emperor was not loud as I expected, and I probably should have kept earplugs off for full effect. But in many other cases, I am glad that I kept them on.
>>
It really depends on the genre and venue.

Some punk and metal shows will kill your ears in smaller venues.

Anyone who doesn't is a fool

I didn't for the first dozen shows I went to, mostly punk, hardcore and metal, and now I have tinnitus. Doesn't affect me day-to-day but its always there. Bums me out sometimes

I wear pic related, they do the job. Might look into getting some pro ones
>>
>>61974647
those there, block out fucking everything.

entymonics, and the shit op posted (which can be had at most store, meijers in the midwest sells them for ten bucks) only clip off around 12db of sound, and most of that is bass and the screaming high's where most of the damage can occer.

I've owned both mentioned and I prefer the ones in op's image, the entymonics feel like you are hearing through water slightly.
>>
>>61974700
So you recommend the ones in OP image? I might pick some up now
>>
>>61968430
>>61968346
I'd recommend ear plugs. I used to go to loud concerts (rock/metal) without protection and now I've got permanent tinnitus in both ears.
>>
>>61972662
>>61973141
>>61973328

no noise and etymotics are good, haven't tried any others, >>61973464 t b h
>>
>>61969739
idk what the hell you're talking about. i saw swans and wore 3 flange earplugs from etymotic and felt like i heard nothing the whole show. they worked too well.
>>
I wear 'em. In my chosen profession, having good hearing is essential.
>>
>>61975877

I wear no noise when riding on my motorcycle. Cuts down on the sound a lot without actually killing tone of things. I'd assume they'd be fine at a concert too.
>>
yes. when i was younger i thought it was a good show if my ears were ringing and everybody sounded like they were underwater when they talked to me. now that i'm older i find ear damage that could have been easily prevented pretty dumb.
>>
>>61976046
They've got four of five different kinds, I imagine that the motorcycle ones cut high frequencies more than any other because of wind. I find the music ones are a good all-rounder, though.
>>
>>61976171

Yeah I meant as in the build quality is good, so their music ones should be good too. The motorsport ones probably aren't the best for listening to music.

Better than nothing though. Your hearing is important, protect it
>>
Why do bands play music so loudly that earplugs are required though? Surely theres a volume level that will reach the entire venue yet not deafen everyone in it.
>>
>>61976736
>Surely theres a volume level that will reach the entire venue yet not deafen everyone in it.

It depends entirely on the size and sound properties of the venue. In a stuffy bar, there's no need to have eardrum bursting sound levels. Large outdoor events are entirely different.
>>
>wear earplugs
>still get ringing ears

thats like having a condom break desu senpai baka
>>
lol an obvious yes. unless you want tinnitus
>>
im actually deaf (i have cochlear implants makes me hear like a normal person) i dont have to wear any hearing protection cause my hearings alread as fucked as it can be so well theres a benefit to being deaf
>>
>>61976916
Are you birth deaf? If not, how do the implants compare to real hearing?

I'm going to from now on. I actually went to a show with them in and really enjoyed myself. I've always been weary of hearing damage, and having the earplugs took my mind off that and I could enjoy the show that much more. Besides sometimes depending on the band and venue the music resonates poorly and sounds like you're listening to brownout headphones. I remember the plugs making the sound just right. so y
>>
>>61975886
The first time I saw them was at Toad's Place in CT. It's literally a bar with a stage, I was shocked that played such a tiny venue.

It was amazing, though. There was no security and no gate, so I was right up front at the stage. Was able to put my drink down on the stage if I wanted to, but that's a dick move because you could spill it and destroy their monitors or pedals...

at one point Michael Gira stuck his ass out into the audience into the face of a kid that looked twelve years old. The kid spanked Michael Gira then shook his hand.
>>
>>61968944
same for me. depending on the venue for me it's actually quite bearable and doesn't seem ear damaging
>>
>>61968346
Take them, hearing doesn't improve it only ages and youll never cure your tinnitus
>>
>>61974647
go to a nose throat and ear doctor, maybe you don't actually have hearing loss, in some cases it can be cured / lessened by taking magnesium and zinc
>>
>>61976987
*wary

anyway yeah i agree
>>
>>61977033
Fucking Marcel.
>>
>>61968346
Yeah, for sure. eliminates echoes and saves your hearing. Forgot to bring ear-plugs to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the volume seemed to go above the carrying capacity of my hearing after a while, sounded like burst speakers and i couldn't hear anything near properly for days.
>>
>>61968941
>square wave contamination
what?

That's pretty awesome that those faggot kids walked out because they couldn't listen to harsh noise. When I saw Swans, Pharmakon was opening for them and the whole show wasn't that loud I've been to literally hundreds of harsh noise shows and I own custom molded Etymotic earplugs but I never use them when I'm at shows, it's like having sex with a condom. Not to mention that the engineers at venues won't ever have the PA set to levels that will damage hearing.

The only show I've been to that was uncomfortably loud that wasnt a harsh noise show was a Ministry concert last year at the House of Blues. Their touring engineer must've been clipping the shit out of the PA and I had go outside and let my ears take a break.

>Not to mention that the engineers at venues won't ever have the PA set to levels that will damage hearing.
yea ok buddy
>>
>>61982004
Your ability to hear high frequencies rolls off as you get older. I really doubt it's possible to get hearing damage unless you're directly in front of a PA speaker. If you go to a Sunn 0))) show and the PA is cranked to the max it's not going to damage your ears. High frequencies damage your hearing, you can crank all the bass and low end frequencies and it's not going to do jack shit hearing damage wise.

Sounds crazy but if I went to a gig and realized I had forgotten ear plugs I would just leave. I went to one show without them and my ears were ringing/fuzzy sounding for weeks. I have bad enough tinnitus as it is and I would never risk it for just 2-3 hours of music.

And like others have been saying, you actually hear everything better when wearing earplugs.
>>
>>61968487
Facts can be true or false.

"The sky is usually shit brown" is a fact - but it's false.
>>
>>61968346
absolutely. ATL's local punk bands are obsessed with feedback, after a show last month my ears were literally ringing for two days
>>
>>61972662
>>61973141

Earasers are great, I play in a band with a loud drummer in a small room and it got to the point that my ears would start ringing within the first minute of our set, so I got the Dubs which sucked imo, then I moved on to Earasers which sound really nice and the sound doesn't get muffled at all. Use em every time I practice, gotta get in the habit of taking them to shows tho lol you're looking at about 30 bucks for a pair of these
