Hidden gems? Pic is one of the best metal releases from last year giving the listener a quality riff attack with no gimmicks.
Hidden gems edition
Within the realm of black metal, people often talk about DsO, Blut aus Nord, Krallice, etc when referring to advancing and expanding the boundaries of the music. Yet, I never hear any mention of Malign who may be one of the more pioneering black metal bands I've heard. Feel free to argue or disagree or both
GOOD FUCKING DAMN WHI WAS DOPE AS FUCK
>those folk bits
Reminder that this album exists.
Added. Also, I wish I could tell you other groups like Ozric Tentacles, but they seem like something entirely of their own. They're psychedelic/electronic/prog rock/reggae dub/world music all in one package, which led to this gorgeous, spaced out sound that I can't draw comparisons to any other group that I've heard. I'll say to listen to Djam Karet though, even though they're not like Ozric. They're very, very good.
What was the last time a metal band has made a good double album?
reposting in new thread
Okay serious question.
Is funeral doom/drone metal a meme genre? It seems like the only bands that people talk about are the classics Sunn Earth Boris the list goes on
can you guys rec me some good drone stuff or does it not exist?
There are main 4 bands (Esoteric, Ahab, Skepticism and SoD), but there is a lot f other solid stuff
Most drone is pretty boring, I only like Melvins and Angelic Process
Except death metal and its derivatives outside of caverncore actually have sweet riffs, and funeral doom is atmosphere done right unlike boring-ass garbage like atmosludge and atmoblack.
dronefag here to help
I don't think he'll ever top this but it's not really a negative. I enjoyed his Gnosis EP and i think he's dropping 4 this year.
Damn this is such an awesome album, Fenriz is an awesome folk metal musician. Recommend more like this and Isengard
I like the Funeral aspects of this
Extremely murky blackened death where all semblance of riffs and musicianship are buried in production trickery, making the whole thing sound like garbled brown noise. Worst offenders being Portal and all their clones.
that album was so good man
What's /metal/'s opinion of this album?
Is there such things as an instrumental grindcore band?
>switching out shape of despair and fucking ESOTERIC
if anything you should put tyranny instead of ahab there, that band's only recommended in funeral doom essentials because call of the wretched sea took a different approach on it at the time
but thanks to Twilight Force everything has turned out alright for it
>some Hueland kvltlord wrote this
>KILL BURZUM NOW
Name better modern prog metal bands than Ne Obliviscaris and Leprous
GET THRASHED, FAGGOTS!
>Band: Divine Blasphemy
>Album: Beyond The Portal
>Label: Lower Silesian Stronghold
>Greek Black Metal. All the songs are relatively long, but have very little actual repetition instead offering lots of good songwriting with smooth transitions between many riffs. Like Blaze era Darkthrone or Rotting Christ but with better variety in riffs.
As bands yeah. Though for Enslaved's case, even though they started putting in prog elements since Mardraum, it wasn't till Axioma they went full prog with non-existent black metal.
Even if we go by your bullshit logic, it's that much more pathetic for you to call HLTO atmoshit and not metal. Thus, you STILL don't know jack shit about metal.
He has been making music for long time though
Actually, I don't know how I would define modern, since Leprous formed in 2006, but made their first demo in 2006 and album in 2009
And NeO existed since 2003 before making an album
You know, I never thought Malign was considered hidden. Like for example it's pretty obvious the role they played when it came to influencing Deathspell Omega. But the lack of replies to this does make me think otherwise and they are really considered "hidden".
I just realized black influenced prog metal is the best prog, I wish there will be more bands influenced by them in the future
Whoever recommended Deathrow's "Deception Ignored", thanks, because while I still didn't like it all that much, it's a step in the right direction. This is better.
I won't get into that again, I'll just say I got a shitton of recs last thread (/metal/ really piles on the recs compared to other generals), and it's gonna take a few days of intense listening to get a better idea of where to go from here. I've heard maybe a thousand albums in the last two years, but only about 100 of those were metal, so I'm still fairly new.
Well...I remember giving Consumed a listen. All the songs are like this one in that there are a couple cool moments (like the intro riff in this song even if it's a bit of a Frantic Disembowelment ripoff, the little touches during the breakdown), the rest is meh (the verse/chorus riffs, the leads, the beginning part overstaying its welcome, the breakdown overstaying its welcome) the meh stuff wouldn't have been bad if more variety were to be there, but there isn't.
For death/thrash it's very uninteresting. The riffs have a techy feel that lacks any punch, plus the vocals are just awful. They sound way too processed for what death/thrash should be, the vocals would probably fit more in deathcore than death metal. The whole thing feels plastic sped up instead of heavy and aggressive, then again I'm judging one song but nothing about it makes me want to check out the full album.
You kidding me? It's the first part of frantic disembowelment but higher pitched and not as powerful due to not as good note choices. Hell the way it comes in then the rhythm section comes in is similar to that song, too.
Even if it's one of the weakest I can pretty much tell what I'm in for.
A clean and sanitized production to make sure it's more accessible to mall kids, some hyper fast riffs that feel devoid of any emotion or passion, all topped off with grating processed vocals belong somewhere on Metalblade or Blank TV.
Ummm...do you play guitar? Like I am not sure how else to explain it. Your hands do like similar shit, just on different places on a guitar. If you were here in person I would show it to you on my guitar.
Yeah for 6 years I was going to bring it up too, in frantic there's hammer ons instead of the power chords played in that seprevation song, the two fast parts in the riff sound nothing alike but the part that it's both tremolo picking, either way, the fingering is so different I would never say it's influenced by frantic
black metal was a mistake
I am not denying the power chords. That's probably where it differs. I am saying that the approach to tremolo picking along with the approach to fingering where the...oh my god I forgot the term...intervals are close. Again, it's that and how everything else comes in just like FD, too.
Euronymous was mad at dead being the most handsome of the group and banging 10/10 sluts everywhere he went, so his midget ass shot him then put together a scene as if it was suicide, even the retarded suicide note "I'M AN ALIEN AYY LMAO I BELONG IN THE FOREST SO I'LL KILL MYSELF"
You guys want a hidden gem? Here ya go.
What is some good melodic-but-not-too-melodic DM like Immolation or Demigod
Made me feel the way I did at 13 hearing Lamb of Gods "New American Gospel"
u wot m8
Shit isn't even close to some suicidecore. Fucking step it up.
By other I was talking about thev2nd, 3rd and 4th, they seem to get ignored here besides their first album, I like them all.tb.h, also I couldn't stand carnival, but this new one is kinda decent imo
been trying to get through one of friends music library, shitty week desu.
>mfw listening to Blacklodge while playing SMT4
Blacklodge is really good. It's almost like Gabber meets metal.
Benis in varjoina aside, are you excited for this?
>Hidden gems edition
Offertoire is such gem
>I was only 9 years old
>I pray to Thall every night before bed, thanking him for the polyrhythmns I've been given
>"Thall is love" I say. "Thall is life"
>My dad hears me and calls me a poser
>I knew he was just jealous of my devotion to thall
>He can't even djent
>He takes away my Ibanez M80M and leaves me with a strat
>I have six strings now and in E standard
>I lay in bed and it's really quiet
>A low rumbling is moving towards me
>I am so happy
>He syncopates into my ear "0111010001101000011000010110110001101100"
>He takes away the shitty strat and gives me a RG-9 BK 9
>I tune lower for thall
>He plays in 4/4
>I play in 7/8
>I can feel my strings spaghettifying as my bowels begin to loosen
>I syncopate with his snare
>I want to please thall
>He unleashes a mighty brown note as my bowels leak all over the floor
>My dad walks in
>Thall palm mutes in his general direction and says "0101001001000101010000010100110001001001010101000101100100100001"
>Thall surfs down my stairs on my fretboard
>Thall is love, thall is life
This is pretty great, man.
Give it a listen my dudes.
Feel like these guys are hardly ever talked about at least where I'm from which is a shame.
Neither is more metal. Both represent very different aspects of metal. Doom represents all non-extreme genres of metal and certain types of death metal, SMT represents all other extreme metal, prog, and avant shit.
THIS IS AMAZING
Are you referring to your friends not knowing them or people in your town not knowing them?
I live miles away from where they started and most people her don't know them but that's expected considering that most people don't listen to death metal. Friends that I know who listen to metal have at least heard them regardless of if they like them or not.
Hidden gem incoming, they have some really nasty songs
alright, i really don't know why you guys were acclaiming this so much, i find it to be incredibly dull and lacking in punch
Have you heard the new Chthe'ilist album? I may be a bit off in the spelling but it's cool.
Also check out Full of Hell.
++Teethed Glory, Labyrinth
Absu and Sarpanitum are fucking great
For The Security has more of a punch if you want that. Disharmonization is just a good example of making alien like progressive death metal that retains the death metal feel, isn't overly self-indulgent, and doesn't wear out its welcome. If you want progressive death metal that's great at building atmosphere just listen to Mystic Places at Dawn by Septicflesh.
holy shit man, i posted about them today, spooky
and yeah, that's one fine piece of avant garde modernist DM
i'm just kinda disappointed, coming from Lykathea Aflame to that was a big punch in quality
the new Chthe'ilist album is dope spooky tech death
and i already know Full of Hell
alright, i'll do that
Dark Fury's Synningthwait. Quality riffy Polish NSBM that unlike most NSBM eschews gimmicks for good songwriting.
