>start off by naming your top three post-The Fragile songs that aren't singles
Not really... I mean, Closer's okay... ;_;
I'd like to like it, but alas.
The Fragile is indeed amazing... a work of art. There's so much going on there and it's so beautiful and ugly at the same time.
Also, I realise no-one else probably gives a shit about this but I've modified my version of The Fragile to be like the vinyl version plus Appendage from the cassette and Adrift and at Peace, which was mentioned by Reznor as a coda to La Mer (and it works really well). I also removed Starfuckers, Inc. because that song blows and doesn't fit at all
I remember hearing PHM for the first time and loving how the two flow seamlessly together
such a great set of songs <333
hm that's a real shame, man closer is one of my favorite NIN songs and maybe even all songs OAT.
what about the live version(s)? Maybe you'll like the ones with bits of The Only Time strung in?
NIN helped with this song right?
It's bretty good.
Where should I start with NIN?
i have waited for this thread for so long
a good chunk of Ghosts but mainly >16 Ghosts II
i actually actively dislike closer am i the only one
the slip is more fast paced and more varied than with_teeth in my opinion they don't really compare musically
I like Closer if I'm listening to the downward spiral from beginning to end. As a single, no. Everyone constantly perpetuates Closer as some great sex anthem when it's not.
Reznor should have gotten his way and got Reptile as another single.
at the risk of following the "why is x so underrated" pattern that has started here
why is Ruiner one of the best tracks in the last decades and the best NIN track and so much better than closer and so underrated?
>i actually actively dislike closer am i the only one
I used to feel the same about it until I saw the live version with that extended "Only Time" ending and that somehow made me respect it a lot more.
Speaking of being the only one disliking something though, I'm one of the very few people who can't into Reptile. I can only manage to listen to the Peter Murphy version. You can kill me now.
I like to run on my treadmill to Nine Inch Nails .Usually they're only an hour long each album with PHM being a short run and Fragile and Ghosts being epic runs.
Hesitation Marks is a really nice beat to it, but I have have to stop at the end of While I'm Still Here. Black Noise freaks me out too much. I mean, nearly panic attack levels thinking about death or Black Holes swallowing the earth sort of freak outs.
You know, it took forever to like With_Teeth, but I managed to do it. It wasn't his best work, but it was clearly a very personal album which 15 year old me could not understand but 25 year old me could.
Usually his other works have a separation between him and what he was writing, usually through theme, but this time around he was writing flat out about himself. I liked that he was willing to take that sort of risk.
That said, some of his choices were juvenile. (Looking right at you Sunspots)
Post awesome NIN moments, I'll start.
>COME ON COME ON! (followed by instrumental ending)
>kill me/kill me/kill me/kill me
>second half of Ruiner
>hiding backwards inside of me i feel so unafraid
m8 that's literally the camera flash sound effect from the first two minutes of TTCM, slightly altered and fused with a power chord
Yeah, if I didn't have my nostalgia goggles on I would agree. Fingerbanged my first girl with that song blaring in the background Halloween 2005. The song is shitty, but that girl turned into a fucking animal to it.
>dat static noise at the end of Hurt
>dat transition between sides on The Fragile
>dat "doo doo doo doo doo" guitar then "BA DUM DUM DUMDUM" drums and " DANAHNAHNAHANHANAHA" sound at the beginning of Somewhat Damaged
>the second half of the Great Destroyer
I used to think it turned to "help me" and even though it doesn't it is objectively a much more interesting idea lol
I'm with you on this. I LOVE the Becoming.
I actually love this song oops xD
It's so abrasive.
I'm the opposite. When I listen to TDS I skip over Closer. Idk, always felt a bit out of place for me (but that's because I listened to the single on repeat long before I knew it was a part of a bigger story)
I'm in the minority that Trent should have used Closer to God in its place for TDS
I like closer more than ruiner haha, but ruiner's 'rap' part makes me want to get up off my ass and shout at the world. It's great.
What Nine Inch Nails would you play to introduce them to a normie?
My girlfriend knows that The Downward Spiral is one of my favorite albums and wants to listen to it all the way through with me, but I want to give her something more digestible first. She listened to Closer and I think she thought it was real creepy.
>the drum buildup to "need you, dream you" in Eraser
>trent's exclamation of "agh, could have been!" in AATCHB
>the shouting of "tryin' to keep myself" in Slipping Away
>"lay my hands on heaven and the sun and the moon and the stars while the devil wants to fuck me in the back of his car" from The Only Time
>also "this song... is about... fucking!"
>"I don't want to be forty years old and still on tour"
>"ahh ahh ahhh ahhh ahh ahh ah" acoustic guitar solo in The Becoming
>DONT GIVE UP IT WANTS ME DEAD GODDAMN THIS NOISE INSIDE MY HEAD
>"you let me violate you, you let me desecrate you, you let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you, you let me fuck you like an animal!"
>the second repeat of the second chorus in Closer to God: "I WANNA FUCK YOU I WANNA TASTE YOU I WANNA FEEL YOU I WANNA BE YOU"
sorry m8 whatcha wanna call them then,
probably With Teeth, it has the songs that got me into NIN and I used to have pretty normie taste
>Everyday is Exactly the Same
>The Hand That Feeds
>Right Where It Belongs
especially the last 2
With Teeth is actually the only album I haven't listened to. Will I like it if I absolutely hated Year Zero? I figured it was more of the same in that style and avoided it.
>And All That Could Have Been
probably the closest nine inch nails has ever come to shoegaze,
that pic is effay af
Song is indeed gorgeous. Their slowest pieces are so fucking underrated (except, you know, Hurt)
Do his bandmates really contribute zero? I don't really know.
I know right!
I'd rather opt for the CD but the vinyl contains exclusive versions of some songs and UGH NOBODY SPENDS $200 ON A VINYL >:(
I was just as pissed off when I found out Halo I-IV was going for the same price here. fucking elitist independent stores
I don't hate Everything. Sure - it may not really fit on the album, but I still think it an OK song. Especially on higher volumes, where the difference between verses and chorus become more apparent.
>the throwing and pushing of richard patrick in early NIN
