>"Me? It's difficult to describe my musical preference. I listen to everything! XD"
My immediate response at that point is "do you listen to harsh wall noise, avant-garde and industrial?". They usually clarify what exact genres they listen to after being mindfucked by shit they've never heard of.
I'll give it a shot.
"Me? It's difficult to describe my music taste. Basically pop music, but more psychedelic and progressive music than anything. I also love most genres of jazz. I only really like a few selected pre-20th century pieces. Avant-garde/experimental is awesome too. I guess you could say my music taste is reasonably broad."
nah not really people like that listen to whatever is considered cool by vast majority of their peers.
Friend tried to say justin timberlake's futuresex/lovesounds was bad. but thinks luke bryan and ed sheeran are music genius.
depends on who you're talking too is how u say it.
If i'm talking to a older person I'll mention pink floyd and frank zappa, miles davis
girl: I'll say shit like chvrches and black flag. but thats only if Im interesting in being friends with them, can't scare people off or act like I'm some kind of music autist. everybody has their own taste I will respect theirs.
I usually say 'I enjoy almost all kinds of music but recently ive been listening to a lot of [genre]'
I think its polite enough while also making way for a followup question if they are actually interested in music
I've been in that situation recently and struggled not to give a pretentious answer, but in such situations I find it hard to not say everything, cause I basically just listen to everything that makes a sound. But then the person asked multiple times, but if you had to specify on one genre, what would it be?
How do you react to that question, because that person just didn't get the concept of not listening to music by genre.
just say whatever u want
remember people don't care about you. they're too busy worrying about themselves. unless they really like you, they're hoping you name something they already know,. if not they dont care
At a pre-party last weekend
>some slut:Me? It's difficult to describe my musical preference. I listen to everything! XD
>me:Oh? Can you name any of your favourite bands or albums?
>she:I mainly just have a ton of songs on my ipod. I have like 12 Bon Iver songs lol
At that point I turned 360° and walked away
>tfw too patrician to get laid
This is what I say as well.
I usually tailor the 'whatever' to who I'm taking to, though. I mean maybe I've been listening to a lot of metal lately, but if I'm talking to some folkie chick of course I'm gonna say 'woody guthrie'
You can call it lying, I call it being a good conversationalist
>trying to seriously explain how your favorite album is a .pdf
Just say the one that you specialise the most in. Don't say everything because you've listened to, say, 5 albums in jazz, electronic, punk, metal and blues music. I listen to a range but I always say underground dance music when asked because it's the area I'm into and know about most.
dude, today is french pop, last week was disco, a month ago it was southern hip hop, next week im planning to go through some college rock bands, and The Books fill in the spare time. what the hell do i listen to
listen to this den :D
>first I went through an 80's pop phase
>then I went through a gangsta rap phase
>then I went through a posi-core phase
>then I went through an emo-core phase
>then I went through an indie rock phase
>then I went through a post-rock phase
>then I went through an IDM phase
>then I went through an indie hip hop phase
>then I went through a jazz fusion phase
>then I listened to some folk music and ambient for a while
>now I guess I listen to all of them lol
God, at first I thought you had the right answer but you fucked it up in your explanation.
The true correct way to say that would be "I'm willing to give every genre a fair shot."
If they start asking for specific bands, you can list a couple that are from a broad range which tells the listener you have a wide interest range. That way you open up further conversation topics for them such as "have you ever heard x? You should check them out".
>favorite album is Ahab's Divinity of Oceans
>explain why I like it to people who ask
>everyone is always really interested and fascinated and usually gets into a discussion on music
I always see these threads and I don't get it, do you guys just intentionally try to weird people out?
post the soundtrack to the special layer of hell these people belong in
I just like to say that I have an eclectic music taste, and that I try my best to listen to as much music as possible. Usually this is a segway into saying what I've been listening to lately.
They are just terrified kids worried that someone will say to them "ha! pleb". Worried that all the effort they put in cultivating their taste will be shown up as fake when they meet a bigger patrician. They can't bring themselves to say they like The Beatles, Radiohead, GYBE, Death Grips or anything else in case they get back "oh entry level stuff" and any attempt to describe their taste will limit it making them seem shallow.
"What do you listen to?" isn't a test it's a conversation opener.
I think the funniest part about is that /mu/core in general is the most entry level shit. It's why I only go outside the /mu/ generals on occasion, because you guys discuss shit like swans as if it's some avant super patrician shit, when in reality they're a pretty damn popular band with a large fanbase.
If you explain what post-punk is, yes.
From my experience it means "what's on the radio and nothing else" In fact they will be horrified if something they don't instantly recognise hits their ears. These normalfags don't like music, they just want to say "OMGEE THIS IS MY SONG" in responce to every fucking top 40 hit since 2005
