the desperate attempt to uphold a cheerful tradition with meager funds and resources, the dreary background with the temporary curtain-wall, a candle as the final remnant of long-lost homeliness

but the tie-together is that whoever these two kids are, despite all that, seem genuinely happy to be there and receive their sad little payloads

and that happiness brings the whole setting to life, and your subconscious thinks about how sad the photographer's life is and the shame behind only being able to provide them this much and the exchange of happiness going on, all in an instant, but combines them into some weird bittersweet background haunted feeling to cope
