Why do Siamese Dream and the double album get so highly rated? It really annoys me that you can barely understand what he's saying (if that) and Mellon Collie just sounds like one generic guitar song.

Siamese Dream is basically shoegaze, which is why /mu/ likes it so much. As for Mellon Collie, I will agree that most of the album is basically filler, but the few excellent songs like 1979, Jellybelly, Tonight Tonight, and Porcelina still shine through.

Loveless is different because the sound is the point. It's not even that difficult to understand them.
Those Smashing Pumpkins albums are pretty generic guitar music and he sings strange where you really need to become accustomed to his idiosyncrasies to know what he's talking about.

If you think Billy's singing is harder to understand than MBV's singing, you must have some type of selective hearing disorder. Also, The Pumpkins were always pretty guitar-heavy on their albums, but I wouldn't really call them "generic" guitar music.

Their live shows are mindblowing. I saw them in the late 90's and again 2 years ago and both were equally great. I would give SD a 7 and Melon Collie just slightly less, just upper-level stuff compared to similar bands at the time.

The production on Siamese Dream is fantastic. Everything sounds clean yet hazy at the same time, in the best way possible. I have no idea what they were doing in that studio but it came out great. The image Smashing Pumpkins was going with at the same time was very cool and original. And their are some kickass pop songs on that album, along with some mediocre ones. It's overrated a little bit but it's a genuinely good album that you can listen to while on road trip or something

He could do with a healthy dose of not giving a fuck anymore, really. Don't know why he gets so much hate, though.

Anyhow, I agree MatIS is a bit padded out, though I like it. Bodies and Thru the Eyes of Ruby are not just filler, for example. I think the night side is better than the day side, which I suppose suits Billy's personality.

Also kind of sick of Greatest Hits fans with nostalgia goggles who pretend everything after Melancholy is bad just because it's not the same shit he already did for three albums rehashed. I really loved Adore and that album in particular got so much undeserved hate.
