I'm at a basketball game right now
Diary has 3 really amazing songs (Seven, The Blankets Were the Stairs, Pheurton Skeurto) but everything else is brought down by the wailing. LP2 is even worse in that regards; I only like Red Elephant off it.
Their last two albums are awesome, though. I think they matured really really well unlike a lot of other 90s emo bands.
Onision's a really obnoxious youtuber.
Look, I understand it's your own personal opinion but Round, In Circles, Song About An Angel and 47 are really great - I urge you to relisten
How am I being obnoxious lmao? For stating an opinion?
I understand the music is great but if the vocals are trash I can't get into it. It's what prevents me from liking Radiohead.
How It Feels is great - it's what I expected Diary to be like when I first listened to it. I just can't get into Diary besides a couple songs.
And The Rising Tide is a really cool alt/experimental (for an emo band, at least) record that unfairly gets shit on.
Just got over the flu, hence the huge gap, it was fucking awful
Are The Cosmic Jokers really that good? Aren't they just a bunch of band members from Krautrock groups that were already past their prime?
British Steel is their worst album
Yeah, I wanted to like Shooting at the Moon more than I did, Joy of a Toy is still wonderful though and maybe my favorite Soft Machine solo record
If Children of God is a 3.5, then Power Corruption & Lies is a 7
Yerself is Steam is the best album of the 90's, eat a bag of dicks
muh rating system:
2.0 = meh
2.5 = decent
3.0 = good
3.5 = excellent
I'm assuming that 2 star means mediocre so, idk how someone can think that yerself is steam and surfer rosa are mediocre fo real senpai
I agree with you on Bob Dylan
I'm not saying you're obnoxious anon, it's just that you stated you disliked the album because "whining". But if that's where you stand then fair enough, I also think that of Joanna Newsom.
Do you like the Wrens?
I'm okay with whining - I mainly listen to emo and pop punk so I'm used to it. But early SDRE/Mineral type wailing is just something I can't get past.
No, what albums should I check out?
Check out the Meadowlands. I'm fairly sure you'll love it.
Cool, by the way, don't ignore Basho's early stuff just because RYM does, it's actually really good (on the other hand, don't ignore his later stuff because Scaruffi does, it's also really good, just different)
>Are The Cosmic Jokers really that good? Aren't they just a bunch of band members from Krautrock groups that were already past their prime?
They were right in their prime while Cosmic Jokers albums were recorded. Yeah, that CJ album isn't the best thing ever, but it's still really good for jamming that wasn't even supposed to be released. I particularly like the B-side, it reminds me of Tangerine Dream's Zeit.
Power, Corruption and Lies is a pretty good synth-pop post punk new wave album but it has obvious, obvious duds.
CoG is just another fairly good Swans record. As far as swans go I think it's the one that's most archetypal of their overall sound
>Yerself is Steam, Surfer Rosa
2 stars for me is lame/not really my taste at all and they were both more the latter for me; and yes, they were both rec'd so i'm not 'balancing my curve' or anything
however, if they were released today they would be total dogshit, and there was way more interesting music created in the 90s if you ask me
shinki chen should be lower imo
children of god on point imo
phil collins should be WAAAY lower imo
thanks for reminding me to listen to weasels
diary should be higher imo
blackstar should be lower imo
marquee moon should be way higher imo
feels should be lower imo
heroes should be lower imo
Yerself is Steam is still perfect and would be perfect in any time, have you even listened to it? I'll admit Sweet Oddysee of a Cancer Cell t' th' Center of Yer Heart is a forgettable track, but by no stretch of the imagination is it bad and every other song is perfect
Greed, Holy Money, Public Castration is a Good Idea, the Swans trifecta
Agreed Technique is their best album, but Power Corruption is almost as good and has better individual tracks
I don't really mean to say that it's bad; like I said it's more on the side of 'it's not my taste/type of music' which is a totally valid reason for rating something 2 stars. I did find the vocals to be actually somewhat interesting but that was about it
I enjoyed it most of the time, but the ending pissed me off. That shit doesn't count as a real conclusion. After that, the rest of the movie feels like a collection of random events rather than a focused narrative and it loses weight.
Greed and Holy Money are nondescript for me. Love Public Castration though.
You're like the first person to agree that with me. Nah - I think some of them are a little too basic british post-punk synth type stuff, although it obviously has some good tracks
hospice being higher than big blood is :/
Why are you stalking me senpai
Anyway most of my 5* albums are rated as such because of nostalgia and the impact they had on me when I was a kid. I rarely revisit them. Check my 4.5* and 4* sorted by rate date to get a better view of my current tastes.
I used to have a disclaimer on my profile about this but I didn't want to be one of those RYMers who took themselves too serious desu
I mean, it's their best period musically, Holy Money isn't as good as the other two but it's still their best style of music. Children of God represents the band getting gutted for Jarboe's shit.
I'm pretty sure the popular opinion is that Technique is their best but Technique is the album where I listen to the full thing on repeat several times over while PC&L has a bunch of songs I love to listen to hundreds of times over and as a whole, the album is still pretty great, it's just not as good at staying consistent in tone, New Order is one of my favorite bands for the record
>It's their best period musically
I disagree. I think they were strongest musically in the mid 90's
I think PCL's the one that gets talked about the most, possibly not on /mu/. Yeah, I'm fairly new to the band. I'm just listening to the ones I got from my father on vinyl (technique, PCL, movement). But I'm very familiar with the 80's British synth-pop scene
I first heard them when they opened for Motion City Soundtrack in 2012, not long after Threads came out. I bought it after the show from the lead singer at the merch table and she gave me a qt smile and said "THANK YOU :3"
what a time...
