Eurocentric Folk. It doesn't have to be racist or fascist, plenty of Neofolk musicians aren't.

the nazi thing is more of a meme. Death in June's main member has discussed his views on nationalism in interviews, but his lyrics are so cryptically put together that it really doesn't matter.

if you're really scared of right-wingers, your options are pretty limited though. Try Current 93. His lyrics are mostly influenced by Christian mysticism and and old ghost stories / folk horror.

Get the John Barleycorn Reborn compilation, not one racist/fascist on it. Then track down albums fromeach individual artist. If you can't find them, WELL.

I mean, I'm not scared but I don't want to listen to music made by people who would probably hate me based on my skin colour

I'm in the process of figuring that out myself. I'm very interested, despite its tendency as a genre to attract right-wingers.
>>
>>61821303
The genre doesn't attract right-wingers, it was built by and for them.
>>
>>61821574

Well, I'd rather not listen to nazi bands, and I know there are non-nazi neofolk bands, so while I won't limit myself by not giving them a shot since I know to seperate an artist's personal beliefs and his/her art, I won't be listening to any songs whose lyrics are basically "HEIL MOTHERFUCKING HITLER."
>>
>>61821614
But, why not?

Guys if we keep pretending neofolk is entirely by and for Nazis then neo-/mu/ redditors will be so afraid of it they'll never get the chance to ruin it for us.
It's perfect.
>>
>>61822102
It's not pretending, most bands are all right-wing or nazi but leftists don't like to feel as if they're listening to music like that and so try to point out stuff like how much of a homosexual Douglas P is while ignoring how he says he 9 times out of 10 would prefer someone in his audience to be "racially aware".
>>
>rejecting a musical piece because of political beliefs

Using that logic you should reject nearly every philosopher

Death in June were an anarcho-punk band before becoming DI6 and they kicked out a member for joining a nazi-party.

Rome is a straight up lefty.

David Tibet is a loony mystic, not a nazi.

http://deathinjune.org/wiki/index.php?title=Interview:1998-Scapegoat
I misremembered the quote a bit but whatever, Death in June is racist and definitely not leftist.
>Scapegoat: In interviews you've expressed Eurocentrics. How do you feel about fans that are Eurocentric/Racialist?
>Douglas: Depending upon their ' version ' of Eurocentric Racialism, then 9 times out of 10 I feel very comfortable with it. This is how it's supposed to be. I would like to think that the Klu Klux Klan version isn't included in this. Eurocentrics goes beyond reactionary Christian, political militias. I believe in seizing the end of time, not being a passive part of it.

Not sure what you're even referring to with kicking out a member for joining a nazi party, I assume you mean Tony Wakeford and he left for other reasons like Patrick Leagas.
>>
>>61822994
tony wakeford was kicked out for, among other things, outing himself as a national front member at a time when DI6 had their records distributed by rough trade and douglas pearce worked at the rough trade record store, an openly and intensely left-wing label/store
not kicking wakeford out would have put the band and pearce's job at risk

wakeford and pearce later rekindled their friendship(both were contributors to and can be seen on the cover of current 93's earth covers earth)
>>
>>61823045
>>61823062
>He then formed Death in June with Crisis guitarist Douglas Pearce and Leagas. This collaboration came to end due to musical differences and because of his membership at the time of the British National Front. Wakeford was asked to leave Death in June in early 1984, with the album Burial documenting his last contributions

that's what history tells us.
Point is, I have no problem in Pearce's right wing views but things not really clear cut as you people make it out to be. I won't never, for example claim that Von Thronstahl aren't nazi because they really wear it on their sleeves.

RoD: Would you say there’s an ideology behind ROME?
Jérôme: No. If there was, it would be a different one every week. This trilogy is the most political thing I’ve ever done. It reflects some early streams of the 20th century left-wing movements and thoughts – I share some of the views and I’ve always been outspoken about not liking the right-wing, but I don’t want ROME to be seen as a political project. It’s again like a movie you make, a subject you chose, a theme you decided to follow for a production. And in my private life, I’m not that much of a political person. I haven’t really found anything ideological that I’d put myself to service to.
>>
>>61823622
But that's true. Skinheads even started as a raggae subculture.
>>
RoD: Matt Howden from Sieben openly speaks against Nazist and racist ideas among Neofolk music fans. Do you have any thoughts on the alleged connection between neo-Nazism and Neofolk?
Jérôme: It’s revolting to see ROME to see linked to right-wing bands. There’s these bands that are openly or by causative factors linked to those ideals. Many artists state they aren’t political, but at the same time they’re dealing with very political issues. I’ve always been very clear that we aren’t right-wing and that we’re on the left side of things, even though we’re not a left-wing band as such. I do not want ROME to be a political band. But Nazis are scum, end of story.

Neofolk's biggest problem is the boring songs, not the occasional fascist imagery. The genre feels so restrictive that it's difficult to come up with anything new. Good neofolk's good though and I think that the national romanticist lyrics (which aren't even used that often) fit it well.
>>
>>61823675
That's correct. I just came here to shitpost but failed miserably.
>>
>>61823746
>Neofolk's biggest problem is the boring songs, not the occasional fascist imagery

yeah that's true, but I can't really can't describe Current 93 and Rome as boring (Di6 can become tedious, especially because when the instrumental part is just strumming on a guitar)
>>
>>61823830
Of course not all of the genre is boring but it's pretty repetitive. I can't bother to listen to most DIJ or C93 albums through because the songs often sound the same or otherwise have tons of filler. The music could be much more exciting simply by using more instruments but lots of sings stick to the man and guitar approach. It can work though, for instance Pyhä Kuolema works well despite the rather barebones approach because the melodies are good.
>>
>>61823972
I respect your opinion but I can't understand it as C93 is one of fav groups/artist/whatever. Tibet's voice has a literal enchanting power on me, and actually they spaced a lot instrumentally and have tons rich arrangements

How is Moynihan chaotic evil? He wrote a shitty book on black metal and sold the rights on something that should not be made I guess, but I probably would accept that offer too with the amount of money he likely got. He seems to have given up on post-industrial several years ago and just plays Irish folk in Vermont now (that he plays at neofolk festivals too for some reason).
