Jason Isbell - Southeastern
This is the epitome of a good country album in this day's age. Hell that one guy on YouTube who loves country and made that one "all modern pop country is the same bullshit" video had this as his AOTY 2013. Very different from Isbell's work in his main band Drive-By Truckers, too (how I personally know about this record since I listen to this band.)
Also I find Devin Townsend's metal shit to be goofy and hard to take seriously, but his release in 2014 The Casualties Of Cool was a surprisingly great attempt at some kind of ghostly ambient influenced country.

I immediately discard the opinions of anyone who themselves disregard country music. It's easily one of the most emotional genres when you dig into it.

Seems like alt-country might be something for you to look into. Some recs of bands & artist who have flirted with country:
Okkervil River
The Elected
Beachwood Sparks
M. Ward
Iron & Wine
Liam The Younger
Josh Rouse
Calexico
Bonnie "Prince" Billie/Will Oldham/Palace Brothers
Sun Kil Moon
Monsters of Folk
My Morning Jacket
Great Lake Swimmers
Bright Eyes
Neil Young
Ryan Addams
etc
When it comes to actual country I would suggest listening to old stuff and not modern commercial country. Patsy Cline is a favorite of mine. And you can't go wrong with Johnny Cash.
Hank Williams Jr. & Friends is my favorite country album.
