>>61731895 super boring beats, overprocessed production, shitty sung choruses, lifeless flow, lyrics that don't say anything. And then, on top of all that, this "midwest redneck we-dun-give-no-fuck tough guy" aesthetic.
MAYDAY is a case study of what happens when you have all the production budget of a major label but you forget to hire an art director.
You now have a choice to make. You can either play a track or two, which may or may not impress you, leave, and disregard this masterpiece and future classic as "just another internet mixtape", OR... you can: -Download the Album FOR FREE -Dedicate an Hour and a Half to Embark on this Psychedelic Journey -Get Some Dank Ready -Get your Headphones (or Speakers) Fired Up -Dim the Lights -Take a Hit -Press Play -Continue to Hit Until Thoroughly "Psyched-Out" -Close Your Eyes -ENJOY!!!
If you do this, I PROMISE you, you will find something beautiful, which is not only intellectual and ambitious, but of lasting shelf life as well.
I doubted it at first but when I listened to it I wasnt dissappointed at all.
>some shitty album by a shitty artist who is shitty because i dont like it so its shit go to bed jonathan shit i love ptchfork
>>61731587 It's not a bad album, but some of the songs are weak. Handlebars is meme rap, catchy but meme rap. If you're a bass player, look at Rise. It's literally 4 of one note, then another 4, from start to finish (I don't play bass, but listen to it.) That Anne Braden / We Are Winning shit is annoying to listen to after the first time. Aside from that, it's a p decent album even if they're preachy as fuck.
Their second album, Survival Story, is a great example of how you can be too preachy. It worked fine when they were doing the political rap thing because we're used to cringe like Rage Against the Machine. But when white dudes get worked up about saving whales and shit, it's laughable.
OP, I'm sorry you love this album so much. I've listened to it probably about 100 times in my life at least and know all the songs by heart, but it's not a good album. My brother still listens to the same music he listened to in high school (10 years ago) and this is one of his favorite albums. That's all I'm gonna say.
>>61732573 ok now when someone calls you jonathan just know forever and ever. /mu/ calls all of us jonathan. if you like this album which is btw aoty you are forever branded as jonathan. wear the badge with pride :D try listening in a dark room with headphones that was a crazy experience for me. >>61732579 not him but yes i am jonathan :D thank you!
>>61732657 dont listen to it now bro download it its free go listen to it later when you can pay attention to the nuances of the mixes. you need to hear the whole thing at once its legendary. and I have no clue this one dropped last year so maybe next year idk man but im excited as hell. /mu/ will probably meme that one too.
>>61731587 its good but a lot of it isnt catchy. too political >>61731688 ill check it out >>61731747 underrated classic more people need to listen to this >>61732358 the album that changed trip-hop. one of my favorites >>61732735 havent gotten a chance to listen to this yet
>>61732735 this gets a ton of praise what you talkin bout willis? >>61732775 exactly what so many people fail to notice. he even emails his downloaders and added me on snapchat and from what i hear the new music is dope. >>61732794 underrated: the album
>>61732794 Please do, Paul's Botique is probably the most wacked out and funniest albums there is. Obviously it's a little bit dated but not too bad. There is no better use of samples though ever than this album
>>61732449 That couldn't be further from the truth though, the singing is done pretty well for the most part, name me one beat that is "super boring", the production is great, bernz could probably work on his flow but Wreks flow is far from lifeless and saying the lyrics don say anything makes me think you haven't even listened to the album. Also where does this "midwest redneck we-dun-give-no-fuck tough guy" come in, theres nothing remotely close to that.
>>61732940 do it anon hes chill af >>61732970 well said. i wonder what people will say about him when hes famous and the majority of /mu/ are fans of him... then itll be contrarian to not like him >>61732979 9/10 imo i know that makes me sound like some sort of shill but shit ive had it on repeat for a few months now >>61733025 i agree with this, its very good dont get me wrong but i would call it overrated before i called it underrated. i think the name is the only thing that keeps it from reaching a wider audience.
>>61733200 I listened to it before the largest part of the shilling, just as it was being released and I didn't like it all that much, theres some alright beats but theres not much else worth checking out. That being said listen to a song or two and decide for yourself is probably the best idea.
>>61733242 >listen to a song or two and decide for yourself >>61733200 no one would. he has fans here because its literally one of the best hip hop albums of the decade. that doesn mean youll like it though. dont listen to a few tracks, thats not what makes it good. wear headphones, download it, get high to it, and sit in a darkroom. let the whole thing play out. it isnt specific songs that make it good. its the concept as a whole. the abstract feel, the intoxicating instrumentals, lots of cool details int eh outros of the songs too. give it a listen, dont fall for the memes. theyve been here for months. why would you ask if its good? why not read teh instructions and listen for yourself. some people think its god tier, some people think its shit, so you can pick a side, or you can decide for yourself. maybe you land in the middle. dont be a follower.
>>61733321 >listen to a song or two and decide for yourself Exactly, listening to a song or two will give you an idea of what the album is going for sonically, if you don't like what they sound like the chances of you enjoying the rest of the album is slim.
>>61733366 except that its a concept album and literally every song sounds completely different. some are strong lyrically but some are weak intentionally, what if anon chooses two of the weaker tracks. no.>>61733200 download it, its free, listen to teh whole thing, or dont listen to it at all. its like gkmc, you wont like it if you pick and chose which moments to listen to. it requires your full attention.
>i am in no way implying it was as good as gkmc, just using it as a metaphor. it is good though.
You cant just listen to a couple songs and expect to get it. I listened to it three times over the coarse of the past few months before it clicked with me. Its a lot deeper then his "bars". The depth is hidden, but its there, and theres a lot of it.
>>61733408 Pretty much every song has the same general fell with few exceptions. Randomly picking out a couple of songs will most likely give the general vibe of the album. It would be best to listen to it all but it's not absolutely necessary to figure out if you would like it or not.
>>61733573 do you actually want him dead senpai? im sending him a screenshot of this thats fucked up man. call him a faggot or whatever but you dont say you want someone dead what is wrong with you. i hope to god youre fucking around and ill admit that comment was pretty funny. but thats messed up. hes like a kid man...
>>61732358 My main problems with this album are the length, no album needs to be over and hour long. The mixing is done horribly at time, on the #fuckcourtneylove song the beat gets so loud that you can barely hear what he's saying, maybe it's done on purpose to push the psychedlic feel either way it doesn't matter cause it sounds like shit to me. His flow is boring as all hell for the most part and his lyrics aren't really all that great either. Not saying it's a shit album just it's far from a "future classic"
>>61733620 i love the mixing its very ambient and you gotta hear it a few times to catch the lyrics. his flow is boring on a few tracks but its intentional. idk im biased because he explained it to me when i asked about it through email. but after knowing a bit of background i think its perfectly done. even the flaws, most of them hes totally aware of. its pretty cool i think.
>>61733620 It's pretty hard to sit through sober. I think it'll be a stoner classic for sure. Didn't he do all the mixing himself? Can't be mad at that man listen to k dot's first album, even the Sly Tendancies tape. I agree though, sometimes it's annoying when I can't hear his voice, and the flow on a few tracks like track three sounds off. I love the production still I think that's the selling point for me.
>>61733683 >his flow is boring on a few tracks but its intentional This sounds like an excuse for having a bad flow, it doesn't matter whether it's intentional or not it's still bad. Same with the mixing, though it may sounds good to some people I just prefer to be able to understand what he's saying.
>>61733785 Way to long, the distortion was annoying as hell, even without the distortion the beat wouldn't have been very good. The best song on the album to me would have to be Pyramids, his voice was clear and although all he was doing was talking it actually sounded pretty good.
>>61733736 Paul's botique by the beastie boys. Their best album in my opinion, but I kinda retract my statement. It's a masterpiece of pop art but not really a masterpiece of true art if that makes sense. Still a great album though
>>61733825 >we've dude there are 83 posts and only 21 different posts in this thread right now and that's including my one and only post right now. You're not kidding anybody, just fuck off and go to bed.
>>61734001 Thats literally because whenever the album is mentioned /mu/ goes on and on about it and doesnt accept that some people love it some people hate it. Everyone wants to be a know it all and thus the memes.
>>61734039 it's not /mu/ that's going on and on about it. There are nearly 100 posts in this thread and only 25 posters and that doesn't seem weird to you when 80% of 4chan posters only post once per thread? Stop shilling this garbage fucking album you fuckhead, and get off this board.
>>61731587 This albums belongs in a cringe comp. ESPECIALLY "Handlebars". I'm not even hating or anything, I tried hard to like that album, because it got such high reccomemdations, but it was so awful, it reminded me of me trying to rap when I was 11.
