Vinyl is a meme format pushed by corporations to trick hipsters in to buy a more expensive format that is worse than CD in every way but "packaging" which is the only thing vinylfags seem to care about.
>>61723377 >"Vinyl is a meme format pushed by corporations to trick hipsters in to buy a more expensive format that is worse than CD" could be very true
>""packaging" which is the only thing vinylfags seem to care about" lots do yes, but i don't think it's really that big of a problem. I mean artwork is a very important part of the actual album, so it's kind of like collecting a bunch of paintings that have sound on them. Plus the exclusive shit that comes with vinyl is really awesome.
Really it's just a fun way collect and listen to music. I don't see what the big issue is with it really. if you don't want to collect vinyl that's fine, if you do, that's fine.
Vinyl > CDs because a cd is literally a junky, useless plastic piece of garbage and vinyl is a beautiful physical product with a great sound. Anyone defending CDs is a tard... if you want digital, listen to digital files on your computer
>>61723573 Looks like someone fell for marketing. Vinyl does not have better audio quality anymore and you're literally retarded for believing this in the current year. So all you have left is the "beautiful"ness of the packaging which is something only a hipster looking for attention cares aboutm
Not this guy but I'm a loner, I get audio in video in different formats cause I can afford it, they sound different, there's little neat things you can find out you otherwise wouldn't just being a retard that downloads everything.
Once again, people. I am sorry you're poor and have no taste.
records are cool as fuck. The album art is huge, the little shit you get like posters or booklets are nice, the feeling of owning something sonic in a very physical form is something I enjoy a lot, the records themselves sometimes being they colored, in different shapes, or having shit printed on them is great.
it makes an album an experience as opposed to just something you listen to
Called them out, got told to provide legit reasons, provided legit reasons, got copypasta because they don't actually have reasons, they just like to cry about nice things their parents won't buy for them. Honestly, there are so much shitty music related shit you can buy if you want to be a hipster/pretentious faggot, but vinyls are really easy for the contrarian-about-everything fags to tackle without actually having a reason other than hating things that people like.
>>61723620 >>61723654 >>61723663 >>61723675 >>61723681 >>61723708 I don't think I said anything too outlandish. CDs are a useless medium. If you want digital, listen on the computer or ipod. If you are interested in purchasing physical objects and you enjoy the experience of listening to records, get vinyl. I dgaf about hipster comments, if you disagree with what I'm saying then argue with me
CDs suck, jewel cases suck, they're only good for burning and playing in the car
>it's more expensive so it's better >it's less expensive so it's better Preference is subjective. Based on objective factors, yes, but ultimately the choice of the one choosing. How about: >I prefer it so it is what I do, you prefer what you do so you do that instead. Not everything has to be a damned argument, you can have dissenting opinions without being at odds with each other.
>>61723594 > passive aggresive with an unearned sense of intellect? > took a picture of his most obscure shitty albums to impress anonmous people online while masking his crippling insecurity? > buying into tactful marketing to make him feel above people that dont overpay vinyl to cure his crippling insecurty?
>>61723421 yep. vinylfags were always a tiny minority, but the format "seemed" popular here because they post their recent (and not so recent) cops nonstop... because if people don't KNOW you own vinyl, how will anyone KNOW how rad you are?
>>61723488 Couldn't have said it better. Plus, I like the little effor that comes with the vinyl, it's like a little ritual and kinda makes the whole thing a better experience, and makes me pay more attention to the music.
>CDs Nice, compact, disky, good quality but do nothing but gater dust on my shelf 6/10 >Vinyl get damaged more easily, worse quality, look better, i actually use them, can see them spinnin round, take care of them 8/10
>>61723704 This. It's fun as fuck to have a physical collection of your taste and experiences. I can't wait until I have kids one day and they go through my record collections 30 years from now and find music and art spanning over 150 years of music. Just like I did with my dad's records and iTunes library ect. If you don't like it, fair enough. And there certainly are cunts who have like 5 records and a crosley, but some of us have us have hi end shit with acoustically treated rooms and enjoy having our friends (yes, real life people) over to spin records and talk shit and drink piss.
If you enjoy a format, use it, listen to music on it. Why do you care what happens to /mu/, or what format /mu/ faggots listen to?
Everyone has their reasons for choosing their own formats, and caring about what others do in the end is only going to shit up your day. If the board has changed because of an influx of X type of user, maybe its time to find like minded folk in real life who you can connect with instead of relying on the anonymous posts of random visitors for approval and social interaction.
To those worried about retards buying things for the sake of social approval and self image, if you're not smart enough to avoid these people in real life, then you're just like them.
Everyone's acting like a fuckwit. Nobody is discussing vinyl yet everyone is acting like they are right. Just do your research and make the choice that is right for you, and stop fucking with everyone else.
i feel like i shouldnt reply, but fuck man. this is like depressing
you felt special and above others for listening to shitty obscure records on vinyl because you bought into marketing
let me guess, you think youre special and dont fall for marketing, which is why youre posting this to further continue that delusion holy fuck man... i hope youre still in high school. i know i was, was completly miserable.
>>61724137 From what I've seen in this thread, it's just another thing for /mu/ to cry about. It literally doesn't affect any of the anti-vinyl people, they just want something to feel superior over.
If anything, it's just kind of sad, but also very 4chan so it totally makes sense. Personally I don't understand cassettes at all for my own reasons but I don't hang out in cassette threads projecting buttmad all over the place because I really couldn't give any less of a shit.
>>61724170 >music discussion board! >lets shit post and bait each other in a massive never ending circle jerk, pretend we're above everyone else, pretend we actually discuss music, then rip on anyone who points it out! >lets sarcastically shit post for attention! Yeah! That'll show 'em!
If you actually wanted to discuss this, you would have to delete the majority of replies here that contribute nothing and just act as bait.
I don't even know. I randomly started collecting records a couple of years ago. Playing a record is more interactive than playing a CD and just forgetting about it, I find. I like that sometimes. When I get sick of it, I listen to music off YouTube and Spotify. That's the thing as well, I think that if I was to choose between CDs and digital formats, I'd prefer digital format.
If CDs are to survive, they've got to reinvent their packaging.
>go to a shopping center >find an attendent >errm...Do you have a vinyl of (insert milk hotel obscure band here)? >Yes, is 2 thousand dollars >o-okay sirr >go back to home >sit in yours grampa's armchair >take the plastic off >uuhhh this print of a photo its so naice xd >look how black it's lol >put the black dick in your vintage player >listen music like everyone in internet does >take a picture of your collection of indie bandcamp artists >vinyl is so better duuhh
>>61724384 Then you'll be surprised to know that vinyl is not yet being pushed by 'corporations' because digital albums is still the format with the highest profit margin Vinyl sells but distributing digital files costs almost nothing So, nah
>>61724242 I don't typically reply to trip fags out of principle (anon image board, you get the idea, if you want attention go somewhere else) but that idea is beyond dead.
Anyway, I understand what you mean. The real thing I'm wondering, and I have a hard time telling the difference, is if people are really fucking stupid or just posting bait. But if I were to circle how many possible bait threads there are, there would be too many, meaning a good amount of these people are probably posting seriously, making it much more sad.
For example, we KNOW this is bait. There is no attempt at discussion, the poster posts something trivial from Tumblr in an attempt to garner attention from retards dumb enough to entertain his thought in the first place. Either that or they're mad enough about it being bait to shit post in response.
Okay, gonna go get my old vinyl, got a gift, a collection of vinyl in this album kind of thing, its pretty old. Be right back guys. Need your help in learning about them. This photo is old, tried to make a thread about them but the whole Bowie thing slid it into darkness.
>>61724506 To be honest, I started tripfagging a while back to trigger anti-tripfags no h8 though, I like someone willing to actually discuss shit on this board for once.
I seriously think it's a huge mix of people baiting (like that post you're talking about. I don't even know what side they're actually on. Knowing this site, they might be pro- posting pseudo-pro- to bait both pro- and anti-, fuck if I know, people are crazy), people genuinely thinking they're "right" as if there is a right, and people arguing because we're on an anonymous board so why not just shitlord everything the fuck up.
Notice how our posts and my previous post (before the one you replied to) got no responses other than each other's responses. Any valid argument with reasoning or argument for the sake of actual discussion gets overlooked because it's not contributing to the shitlording.
>>61724596 Maybe if your common instagram chads and stacies are willing to pony up for a working system. They're usually not, so they buy crosleys because it's convenient, buy some Vampire Weekend albums, post them on their youtubes then get bored of them. That is not a significant profit for anybody. The people that consistently, constantly buy records keep the pressing plants going, and for them it isn't a fad. There are those people who compulsively buy for any reason but listening to it, but that happens with any type of collectible. It's the same concept as buying toys and video games and never opening them.
>>61724657 I think you've got the right idea, and yeah the same thing happens especially in the /gg/ threads where you see OC, nice set ups, I saw one guy with a 1996 White Falcon Gretsch and it literally got no fucking replies, the anons ended up calling each other retards, etc etc over. Even now: >>>61723962 No replies to that yet. Lets veer back to the thread topic. Its just how things are I guess.
Here is the list in the album thing. Any ideas on source? Info on the vinyl itself?
>>61724967 not the guy you're talking to but i'm mad
I was into vinyl before I knew it was cool or that there was a "revival". I found a box of records in my parents basement and thought they were cool as shit, that's all. I was never marketed to. Go fuck yourself
>>61724809 >>61724899 Was starting dinner, and this guy has the right idea. When I started getting into vinyl, it got so much easier with identifying, locating, trading, buy/selling when I started using discogs.
vinyl is the only way to get some music that simply does not exist in any other format. how fucking stupid can you be? i buy new vinyl very rarely and that's to support the artist + label (i don't buy vinyl from any of the bigger guys, there's no point i'd rather buy the web release).
>>61724262 Lurking on /mu/ is like watching a bunch of people who can't swim drown together. They're all flailing ineffectively and lashing at each other. They claw at and dunk each other in an attempt to keep their head up. The only difference is there's nothing actually at risk here, so it's just pathetic instead of sad.
For me, Vinyl isn't about the music quality, or the packaging, Its about the experience.
I love going to the record store and browsing thousands of albums, feeling them, looking at them, getting them. I love getting home, opening it up, dropping it in, picking up the tonearm and dropping the needle and just sitting on the couch and enjoying the whole experience. I love the physical aspect of it, brushing, cleaning, flipping.. I love having my records on my shelf in my room. I love listening to an entire album, from track beginning to end.
Yes, I still listen to music on my phone, at work, on the radio, on the computer. But the experience, I just cant explain it. It's something that playing a playlist or buying tracks on iTunes or what ever will never ever compare to.
>>61725369 It probably does, but fuck it. It's good to like doing stuff with things that actually exist as tangible objects in reality, instead of just a bunch of pixels on a screen. Being on the computer is basically like staring at a wall. Probably why everyone on the internet is so depressed, staring at a wall for long enough makes you all existential
>>61723946 Erm it depends, like for a vinyl rip to sound the way people like (warmth, crackling etc.) the rip has to be taken from an analog master tape but the issue a lot of people have from newer rips is that they are just made from CD copies.
So generally yes it's good because it indicates it was ripped from an analog source, and the reason it sounds that way is because Analog recordings and vinyl have issues recording bass iirc
However, It's possible that some rips are just digital rips and are mastered to specifically sound "like vinyl" because it's such a big point of contention with enthusiasts.
I don't think so though since that sounds too expensive and Vinyl is already a meme designed to extort money for the most part (excluding personal preference, artwork, bonus stuff for boxsets etc.)
>>61725568 Following on from the bass thing, what I forgot to mention is that it's basically filtered to make it sound passable, but like most people wouldn't be able to tell if it was a recreation or the real thing so it doesn't matter
>>61725790 Personally I'd suggest Audio Technica because I've tried many of their models and they have models for pretty much any price point you are looking for. No exact model recommendation, if anything just check some reviews, but from personal experience they're all good quality.
>>61725790 It's considered a meme nowadays, but all that means is it's popular. Pretty much every novice fag on earth has one, but they're still quality shit. Planning on getting one myself in about a month
should I sell my records? desu I prefer the digital convenience of having a large FLAC collection which includes numerous vinyl rips. My record player is shit and really unusable so either I have to spend money to get a new one (probably a carbon or smth) or just sell al my records.
this is my most valuable vinyl but I already have a pretty good vinyl rip of it. http://www.discogs.com/Nirvana-Nevermind/release/3229479
how do I sell my vinyls on discogs/ebay etc? how do I package to sell
I like to listen to vinyl records because when I was a little kid my mom and would sit and listen to all her old Marvin Gaye and Earth, Wind, and Fire records. She's not dead or anything, it's just fond memories. At some point I just started buying from record stores and listening other stuff. If that makes me a hipster, than I guess I'm a hipster. Although hearing girls talk about how they're "sooo dedicated to music and how they listen to Halsey on their Crosleys cuz it so indie" gets on my nerves sometimes
>>61725369 Pretty much this. I like hunting down records at the local thrift shops and local record stores, found some pretty good shit for $1. I buy some new stuff I like on vinyl, but mostly like hunting down classics for cheap. Started collecting 10 or so years ago on and off, now the prices have gone up and good stuff is harder to find.
As someone who actually grew up with vinyl, it got to the stage where I would just tape any new record and put it back in my shelf to take up spacee. By the second half of the 80s I didn't even bother and just bought the tape in the first place to get the nice dolby sound.
Vinyl sucks and I'm glad I sold all my records as soon as I bought a CD player.
>>61726668 I forgot to add that I also like listening to music on a nice system, instead of computer speakers or headphones. My setup isn't that fancy, probably cost me $1500 or so with the largest expenses being the turntable and speakers, but I also listen to CDs and digital through it as well. Sometimes I just want to chill with music and no other distractions.
>>61726971 Not at all. It started for me when I was helping my parents clean out their basement and ran across a couple of boxes of vinyl and an old Dual turntable they didn't want. Took it home and hooked it up and enjoyed some tunes, bought some more records. Took some time off and started collecting agian.
