I'm 28 years old, I'm probably older than the majority of people on /mu/. I've studied music theory in college for five years. I play more than five instruments including guitar and violin. I'm part if a rock duo and I perform monthly at various places. We've been working on an album since 2014. I think I know what I'm talking about.
To all you Ziggy Stardust fags, how much music theory do you know? What instruments do you play? I'm guessing none.

No one mentioned complexity, but since you're so sure about it, how about naming a few mainstream pop songs with more complex harmonic progressions. Provide Roman numeral analyses to back your point up, as well.

Strawberry Fields Forever

progression is I -> v -> viio7/C -> I -> V/C -> IV

that's roughly BSing it anyways, I'm not going to chart every exact chord.

It's funny how you stopped just before the prechorus because you realised you were wrong and it is pretty complex after all.
You didn't even get the verse right, either.

>Strawberry Fields Forever
The refrain is nice but overall this song is far more repetitive, predictable and simplistic than "Life on Mars?"

>>61691612
No one is saying it's "avantgarde", we're saying it's an example of stellar pop songwriting.
>>
I say this as a recovering theater kid

if broadway showtunes sounded more like that album I'd be seeing a lot more broadway shows

>>
>>61691139
>thinks that just means complexity
Again showing just how knowledgable you are when it comes to music.

>>61691320
We weren't even talking about complexity retard we were talking about harmonic nuances with the song has quite a bit of.

>>61691509
Oh god this one's even more pathetic since SFF not only has less chords (so even on the complexity meter it has less to offer) but also is less harmonically nuanced relying on muh start stop shit to be interesting instead of really taking the listener on a journey. Not to mention SFF does like the same thing again before the ending. Nowhere near as interesting as Life On Mars.

Also get that bullshit muh avantegarde out of here nobody said that either nor is avante garde music complex based on you thinking we like this cuz avante grade and the initial complexity bullshit. Get the stupid /mu/ bullshit out of your ass and realize that good songwriting/composition is actual more important than muh experimentation.

Well, like I said it is for sure better than some classical music. Not all classical music takes full advantage of the theoretical movement/progression through chords that is allowed, and a lot of crazy harmonic shenanigans where classical music does have a lot of harmonic nuances didn't really happen till Romantic, which also went away when the avante grade gimmick faggots took over (cuz remember, just cuz you achieved total serialism doesn't mean your ability to make music's actually good.)
>>
>>61692530
Why are you comparing it to classical music?
You outright said the techniques he used are unconventional for pop music, which is exactly what I was saying in the first place. Did you mean to respond to >>61690463?
>>
>>61693090
None of the chords/movements Bowie used are unconventional for classical music. You can't just lie about that and assume I'll and everyone'll believe you.
>>61693108
Because the one anon was.
I'm totally down for saying Life on Mars is incredible for popular music.
>>
>>61693155
Again, where did I say it was unconventional for classical music? Did you even read my fucking post? Do you even know classical music?

Here I'll reiterate one more time. Life On Mars has a lot of harmonic nuances to it. I said it was better than SOME (again SOME) not ALL classical music. A lot of classical music pre-Romantic had more basis in having a lot of nuances when it comes to pitch (polymelodies, counterpoint, etc.) a very different world from harmony. People in classical music did do much more crazier stuff in terms of harmonic nuances than Life On Mars over here but most of that, again was during the Romantic era. Baroque era was all about having more crazy complex melodies, Classical era was based on being simplistic in general, early impressionism stuff in the 20th century is like Romantic so yeah it had crazy harmonic shenanigans too that make Life On Mars look like baby shit, while later 20th century "avante garde" stuff can't even touch more average popular music songwriting wise since gimmicks became more important.

>>
>>61694370
Idk man I agree. How dare they get so much praise for making the best in popular music? Some bullshit indeed.
>>
>>61693748
The Baroque wasn't about rhythmically active shit, it was about conveying an affect in movements. The active stuff was an effect of this.
Then the classical era introduced the idea of a variety of affects per movement as an emotional journey, which produced much more interesting harmonic progressions. Mozart used everything Bowie did.
>>
>>61693820
>>61694370
>>61694411
It's funny because Pet Sounds is actually the worst album ITT
>>

/mu/ hasn't really got a clue when it comes to good songwriting, and it's no surprise really seeing what bands are popular here.

>>
>>61694452
Again, WHERE DID I SAY ABOUT RHYTHMICALLY ACTIVE? MELODIC. PITCH. ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER DO YOU READ IT?

Classical's attempt at the emotional journey resulting in interesting harmonic progressions was nowhere near as next level as Romantic's attempt with the same thing. Mozart used everything Bowie did I can agree on that because again, Classical doesn't hit the level of crazy people went with harmonic shenanigans that Romantic did which surpasses Classical and Bowie.
