stop, anniefag. She's like 5 albums into her career and still nothing more than indie darling.

She's set in her career trajectory, and it's not for fucking legend or pioneer status
>>
>>61666353
True, but i'm not sure her trajectory is going to include anything better to what she's already released. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
>>
>>61665894
If she isn't, then who is?
>>
Seriously, no. Just no. In what way is she the successor? What did she achieve? What culture has she influenced? There's no way some ok Indie songwriter is the spiritual successor to an icon for a generation, just because she has weird hair and makes kinda left-field pop music. Maybe give her more time, but for now hell no.
>>
>>61666394
>still nothing more than indie darling
Wrong. She's not as popular as Bowie, but she's quite popular.

She has a very strong evergrowing fanbase. Many other musicians respect and collaborate with her, people generally like her, her music is critically acclaimed.
>>
>>61666470
>What culture has she influenced?
It's too soon to but wait few more years and you'll see a lot of musicians naming her as an influence. You're comparing a 40 years career with a 12-13 years one. Not counting how much more difficult is these days to be a real influencer and icon.
>>
>>61666514
She's not really. There's not one of her vids on youtube with over 5m views, that's pretty small. Youtube views are popularity currency these days.

Yes critics like her, yes she is respected. That's the case for a lot of her contemporaries too. Bowie wasn't just any artist.
>>
She is not going to be the new David Bowie, that's for sure, but what some people dont get in yhis thread is that OP meant successor. Of course she is not Bowie but i would say she is the closest there is to Bowie nowadays. I mean both make art pop/rock with influences from experimental genres (usually ambient/krautrock for bowie and it is noise/no wave for annie) she played with Glenn Branca after all. Both have stage presence with costumes and pretending to be people they are not on stage, both have agitated sexual lives, both collab continiously with other artists, both have constantly been acclaimed by critics...

I know people are going to insult me for saying rhis i think she definitely is the closest to Bowie there is today
>>
>>61665904
>>61665918
We get what we deserve, I suppose.
>>
>>61665894

David Bowie influenced a whole genre.

She's just a generic artist among shit lods of others.

She isn't a prodigy. She didn't invent peanuts.

She is not a consensus.

Bowie like Jackson were popular, no matter what genre you're into, no matter if you're well educated in music or clueless : Everyone loves their music, from demanding music critics to Mr.Nobody.

Which she isn't. She is far from being at Bowie's scale and I doubt that she'll ever be.

No value judgment though.
>>
>>61666622
Name another artist then if she isn't good enough.
>>
>>61666774
This is about St Vincent and Bowie
>>
>>61666671
Well said. She's not going to be the new Bowie (that's impossible these days), but a great successor, why not?
>>
>>61666711
Bowie didnt invent anything either, he just perfected things thst were already done, see the berlin trilogy for example, he spent days with brian eno and mixed krautrock with ambient, synthesizers etc, he didnt invent it, but he took it all mixed it and made it perfect.

St vincent hasnt invented anything either but she has also been doing the same thing, see actor for example where she mixes chamber pop with noise/noise rock, and she does it perfectly
>>
>>61666802
Seriously, name another artist. Let's pretend St. Vincent never existed. Who's the successor of Bowie?

Not the guy, but Kanye. Every album he released changed the music scene, every style he wore became a fashion trend. He makes accessible music, but doesn't hestitate to put out risky music for mainstream standards. Hip Hop is the new Rock. If we're talking Bowie scale than Kanye is the only one that can match. I know I will get flag for this but you know I'm right.

Bowie owed a lot of his marketability and popularity to the amount of shock value tied to his image, (and less so) his capacity for experimentation. Because the modern pop landscape doesn't find any ideals similar to Bowie's shocking, a "true" successor to Bowie is not really entirely possible.

Assuming there manages to be a true successor to Bowie (both musically and "visually"), the fact that they will never ever get radio play or any sort of highly mainstream recognition would pretty much delegate them to indie darling status as someone mentioned earlier.

A true Bowie successor would probably have to be prominent in the mainstream, highly marketable, highly critically acclaimed, and able to shock even internet millenials. The closest to Bowie right now would literally be Kanye, but the amount of shock value he brings to the table compared to Bowie is minimal.

Listened to them all, don't really see the resemblance with Bowie.

And listening to Marrow and Cruel, I felt she was VERY inspired by other songs.

ITT: People forgetting Bowie didnt have real mainstream appeal until Let's Dance, it is the album that made him really popular.
Nowadays everybody knows Kanye, he is a superstar, Bowie wasnt, ziggy stardust only peaked at 7 in US charts, he was of course well known in rock circles but not by everybody at least until Lets Dance.
People comparing him with Kanye makes no sense, they are using mainstrean acclaim as the fact that makes them similar but it is not true.

Anyway, this whole discussion is pretty fucking stupide.

There won't be a next Bowie. In the sense that people who are trying to put out songs that sound original won't do what has already been done.

And that's alright.
>>
>>61667314
Bowie's shock appeal was only there in the early and mid 70's, but after that he was hardly 'shocking' in the conventional sense
>>
>>61668330
You have to consider the scope of popular music's appeal at the time: appreciation of music as a hobby has become more widespread in the 21st century. While that's only slightly relevant, as Kanye is definitely more more popular now relative to how popular Bowie was in his time, they've both handled their careers very similarly.

They're both able to adapt to a variety of different styles and genres with considerable success, they're famously controversial, they sometimes act as overarching "godfathers" of their respective genres, and they're both highly popular + acclaimed. The comparison is entirely valid, if a bit pointless, but calling Kanye a successor to Bowie is literally untrue

I've been on /b/ for a while
I'm the best in all my classes but in the past week I got called a pseudointellect on /sci/ and that really fucked me up. Feel like I'm literally losing brain cells. Dad has alzheimers, scares me that I might get it too. I just thought I'd cheer myself up by finding some Annie fans on /mu/
Now realise I'm not unique, not special, not part of an 'indie' St Vincent gang
I'm not angy at others liking her too, I just feel shit currently, and always felt Annie is something special to me, but thanks anon
>>
>>61671978
bruh, I love Marina and her Diamonds, and she's getting better musically. But I don't think she's even close to Bowie in the 1970s.
>>
>>61672020
Then the best remedy for that is certainly not 4chan. Trust me, this place should only be touched when you are in a positive mood and feel like shitposting. Not when you are in a slump.
>>
>>61671967
You're funny, keyboard warrior. I bet you'd pee your pants if you'll see her looking at you irl. Loser.
>>
>>61672026
That's because she's still in her early phase. Next album will be her Ziggy Stardust.

Don't worry, there are many real St. Vincent fans here. But be aware of trolls.

Really? I'd say that's definitely one of my favorite albums, and the sound really put her on her way to her ST album.

Honestly, she could just be really bad at talking to fans. It's hard addressing someone who views you so positively that they bought your stuff.

Probably the strongest bait I've seen on /mu/. Especially considering their music styles.

Bowie: Highly experimental and innovative musician who makes intricate masterpieces with enough accessible elements for everyone to enjoy.

St. Vincent: Makes simple repetitive songs then throws random "artistic" sounds over top so everyday people are alienated and hipsters can think they're special listening to her "quirky" music.

You clearly didn't listen to her albums. Maybe one or two songs at max.

Nah you're right she's definitely the next bowie, post me the song you think makes your case best. Or hell find me a song that isn't nothing more than quirky offbeat noise over a mediocre, generic pop song.

Bitch is a hack

Guys, nothing against St. Vincent, but the quality between the two is drastically different, sorry but its true. She's released 4 albums, at that point into his career Bowie had already released classic songs which are considered some of the greatest of all time, like Space Oddity, Life on Mars, Oh You Pretty Things, The Bewlay Brothers, and The Man Who Sold the World. Annie doesn't have a single song of that caliber. Going by amount of albums is being nice, let's take age into consideration. Annie is 33, by the time Bowie was 33 he had released Honky Dory, Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Low, "Heroes", and Lodger, all amazing albums that are often ranked among the greatest of all time. By that point into his career, Bowie was already cemented as a legend, having made a deep impact onto music history and changed entire genres. He had already created several characters and gone through many different stages of is career, he had already explored multiple genres. On the other hand, Annie has released 4 good indie rock albums, not even close to what Bowie had achieved by that age. And let's go back to amount of albums for a second, Bowie's fifth album was The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (arguably one of the 10 greates rock n' roll records of all time), do you think Annie's next record will be as good?

Annie Clark is not nearly as good as Bowie, but few artists ever are.

Strange Mercy is an amazing album, St. Vincent (album) is mediocre, most of the best tracks were on the deluxe. Excited for what she has in store in the future, any news on an upcoming album?
