So /mu/, are you sick of the mainstream music industry fucking around with Indie Rock and Hip-Hop and overall trying to make everything sound like samey pop music?
Well good news: since the death of popular Metalcore in the early 10's, it's basically become impossible for the musical mainstream to stick their fingers in Metal. Many bands in the Metal scene are constantly experimenting and looking for new types of extreme sounds.
>B-But Metal is for neckbeards
And that's why it will never be ruined.
>Metal is mainstream as fuck right now.
Metal used to top the charts back in the 70s, 80s and 90s. The most popular of Metal bands get, at most, 10 or so million views on their videos.
How many pop epics are there? In metal longer (10 + minutes) songs and concept albums are everywhere. Plus, metal bands know how to vary the style a bit: on albums you get faster songs, slower songs, epic songs, etc...
In fact just look at the name "pop" for populist - pop is a genre of music that is defined by mass appeal, it caters exclusively by definition of the lowest common denominator.
The best metal was made in Norway and Sweden in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. No more good metal has been made since.
You say Kanye West, I say Disturbed
You say Death Grips, I say Lamb of God
You say Sufjan Stevens, I say Avenged Sevenfold
You say My Blood Valentine, I say Bullet for my Valentine
You say Taylor Swift, I say Bring me the Horizon
95% of teens these days think they're some kind of faux hipsters and listen to indie, hip-hop and pop garbage. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to true heavy metal, like this post, reblog it, retweet it, share it, and instagram it or whatever, then copy & paste it to at least five other social media sites. Don't let the evil of heavy metal become tainted by this dreck.
metal is literally fedora: the genre, right next to jazzpunk and electroswing
its easy to get into and is popular as hell yet delusionally you believe otherwise
"BUT MUH EXPERIMENTAL METAL"
this applies to literally everything.
Metal is an extremely diverse genre. Probably more diverse than any other genre. There's subgenres of subgenres of subgenres, some way more popular and accessible than others. I'm just saying you have to take that into account when talking about the popularity of metal as a whole.
The only metal I care for is death, black, and old school heavy metal. Considering that OSDM revival, war metal, and blackened thrash are everywhere in the underground, metal is still a solid genre.
Old school death metal will always remain the height of the genre.
> he can take these vocals seriously
> neckbeards tell you metal is 2deep4u for years
> never listen to it
> finally give it a listen
> can't stop laughing at vocals and edgy album covers
> sounds like a child trying to be a spooky demon
> "teh hardcore" metal recs arent offensive or hard to like at all
> literally animal collective is harder to like than this
why do cucks take this shit seriously?
There is "2deep4u" metal out there, most of it is shit. Metal is best at being raw and aggressive, if I want something else I can listen to any other genre of music. Is it really hard for people, both fans and non-fans of metal to understand you can branch out?
But making long songs doesn't makes a band good, because a lot of metal bands do it and the result is a shitty song that could have been resumed in 4 minutes while having a better result.
A lot of bands from other genres try to make long songs, realize they suck at it and stop, but metal ones keep going because they think "well, we are a metal band, we HAVE to make long songs".
I told you, most "2deep4u" metal is bad, the bread and butter lies with the raw and aggressive stuff you find in its more extreme genres, but since you don't wish to try expanding your taste here's some of the "2deep4u" metal I was talking about, I think most of it is shit but you can draw out your own conclusions.
>death of popular Metalcore in the early 10's
Yeah, they just call it "hardcore" now, or "beatdown" or other silly shit.
> it's basically become impossible for the musical mainstream to stick their fingers in Metal.
What the fuck are you on about? Even black metal and death metal have been shitified by the slithering happy merchant industry.
The only thing the mainstream won't touch is anything considered "offensive", which by modern view is rightwing extremism or extreme antisocial views (antisocial in the realest form: advocating violence, rape, paraphilia/fetishism, real occultism, ect), which leaves you with only the underground.
I'd like to see the day when the mainstream start supporting power electronics or harsh noise.
THRASH - mainstream as fuck
DEATH - somewhat mainstream
BLACK - still pure
-CORE - ruined
POWER - super pure, extra virgin
DOOM - mostly untouched
GLAM - mainstream pandering shit
PROG - see Death
essential metal-for-people-who-dont-like-metal core:
Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History
Liturgy - Aesthetica
Deafheaven - Sunbather
Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
Anything by Neurosis or Sunn O)))))
Prog is far more mainstream than thrash. With thrash there's a big schism in fame between the big four (mainly big three no one cares about Anthrax) and other thrash metal, besides bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer prog is by far more mainstream
I don't get why there are always threads bashing metal. Most stick to /metal/ and never come out. Anyways, metal is a fucking huge genre with a plethora of subgenres. If any anons think all metal is just derivative of Disturbed or whatever, that's just wrong. You can wank around to Anco all you want, and I won't compare it to fuckin Green Day because I understand nuance in music, and I'm not a fucking idiot. These are some bands I've llisted to today, and all of them sound pretty different from one another.
>his hero is gone
>gnaw their tongues
>literally fedora: the genre
no, that's definitely not twee or "indie rock" or any of the other shit actual fedora hipsters listen to
don't get me wrong, power metal is turboshit but most metal is quite good
>what is Ghost
The trend changed from metalcore/deathcore shit to occult "doom rock" artists, heavy metal revival, and stoner doom clones.
Like with anything there's the good and the bad within that movement.
Only the most fringe subgenres of black and death metal are safe from capitalism. Traditional NY-style BDM/slam or NSBM for example.
' Cause metal voluntarily goes away from the mainstream. Occult themes, black clothes and the whole social stigma of aggression, combined with the kitsch of many metal fans keeps the mainstream away. Metal fans listen to metal because they want edgier, harder music. By definition, neither pop or indie.
