jesus why is RYM so shit and why can't anyone fix it?

I remember back when they enabled the top songs preview thingy for Sonemic I had typed the top 50 IDM songs and I literally got Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, the list goes on

good thing I didn't look-up techno as it would've been even worse
>>
>>61599061
rym is literally garbage for electronic music because its filled with rockists, everything is underated and if it isnt an album it barely gets any recognition

I am mostly a rockist but i agree with this

>>
>>61600793
Of course soundtrack albums are overrated. Most people who get them are people who loved the music/game/whatever and the music in it, so they know what they're getting.

That said, Akira Yamaoka really is good at what he does. The problem with that OST is that all the tracks are too damn short, they're meant to be played as loops. He should release a stand-alone ambient album sometime.

The problem is when soundtracks derivative of non-soundtrack music get higher scores than the music that inspired them, such as the case with the SoR and Silent Hill soundtracks. No one is shitting on vidya soundtracks, just stating the fact they're mad overrated.

Now fuck off to /v/.

Yes, by educating the rocktard plebs so they would stop being so rockist and retarded. Alternatively, gassing all the rocktard plebs.

any alternatives with good genre categorization?
discogs is shit for that purpose because it doesn't do well in electronica subgenres and there are no custom charts.
>>
>>61601391
Discogs was literally created as a database for electronic music releases and electronic music exploration.

>electronica
Haha, and stay out.

Nice passive aggressive shitpost.
>>
>>61601408
maybe it was created as one, but that doesn't mean that it's good for exploring music because the genre tags are as generic as they can get.
what's your issue with calling it electronica though? do I need to start calling it fucking electronic plus music or some shit like that?
>>
>>61601391
discogs does the job fine, you just gotta learn to navigate it, e.g. http://www.discogs.com/search/?sort=have%2Cdesc&style_exact=Techno&style_exact=Acid&genre_exact=Electronic&type=release

charts are generally a bad way for finding new music though, you're guaranteed to discover music everyone has heard and knows already
>>
>>61601462
>the genre tags are as generic as they can get
Look under "style".

>what's your issue with calling it electronica though?
It makes you look like a retard (which you are, but that doesn't mean you can't hide it).
>>
>>61601510
So does saying ''electronic''.
>>
>>61601469
Individual user lists that list releases by their community rating are better than sorting all the releases by most collected.
>>
>>61601469
I found lots of cool music using charts (thank mr esoteric), and I only browsed through top 100.
I still don't like using discogs because the genre tags rarely match what I'm looking for. also the genre descriptions on rym come in handy when I want to know the bare basics about something I'm going to listen to.
>>61601510
>throws fits over calling a genre in a way different from his conception

I think you might have a problem with projections, timmy.

>1983 genre of techno

I'd have assumed "Kraftwerk" "invented" "techno" before 1983?
>>
>>61601575
Kraftwek never made techno.
>>
>>61601323
Yeah, I like techno and house but /bleep/ers are about the worst people on /mu/. Little to no will to discuss or recommend anything, anything popular or even in album format is considered shit, nothing but anger and contempt for others.

It's true that RYM isn't nearly as good for these genres as it is for rock music, but still. I haven't heard Bare Nuckle II but the other albums in OP's picture are really good.

>>61601462
>what's your issue with calling it electronica though?
"Electronica" has no good definition, it's just a very vague umbrella term. RYM doesn't even recognise the term. Better to use "electronic music" or be more precise.

>>61601593
''electronic music'' is fucking huge compared to ''electronica''.

>Electronica is an umbrella term that encompasses a broad group of electronic-based styles such as techno, house, ambient, drum and bass, jungle, and industrial dance, among others.[1] It has been used to describe the rise of electronic music styles intended not just for dancing but also concentrated listening.[2]

>Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production, an electronic musician being a musician who composes and/or performs such music. In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology.[1]
>>
>>61601593
>Yeah, I like techno and house but /bleep/ers are about the worst people on /mu/.
(not true by the way)

>Little to no will to discuss
There is discussion all the time

>or recommend anything,
/mu/ should take note, this is not /r/

>anything popular
Plenty of popular music is discussed, based on whats played in good clubs, just not EDC/Ultra shit

>or even in album format is considered shit
Its a dance music general, clubs don't play albums

>nothing but anger and contempt for others.
only for people who don't respect the guidelines of the threads
>>
>>61601534
yeah but those aren't dynamic

>>61601560
that's where the youtube samples on discogs usually come in handy m8

discogs is better for me because of it's bigger database and the fact it has a maintained youtube samples feature available at the go. the lack of a cancerous community also comes in second

Only on a website as shitty as RYM do you see classic, influential, critically acclaimed electronic music releases be rated 2.70/5 and less.
>>
It's pretty simple really

Want to discuss dance music (or anything related)? - discogs

Want to discuss rock? RYM

You can think of this as a racial divide if you want, because it is more or less exactly that.
>>
>>61601781

>>
>>61601778
Yeah, meme abuse gets annoying on /mu/.

>>61601828
It's not just dadrock — most genres nowadays are released on albums and EPs. And there are many great house, techno, breakbeat albums that work very well. You're missing out if you stick to that visible part of the iceberg, but I think it's a shame that there is not just a divide but animosity between the two ways of listening to that music, purists who only like club music as it's listened to in clubs and people who only take music seriously when it's on album format. >>61601821 >>61601781 Shit, that's true and it's just sad.

It's not even just electronic music either — listening to jazz, classical or even a lot of folk music on album format only can be ridiculous. Albums are a perfectly good way of listening to music but it's not the only one and shouldn't be considered as such — I don't know why some people have problems with that.
>>
>>61602228
I think part the problem is the whole ''only plebs don't listen to whole albums'' meme here, plus all essential charts and threads are about albums, constantly.

Also, you missed R&B/soul/funk for singles too.

Yes, good points.

> all essential charts and threads are about albums, constantly
Someone tried to make a chart for labels once. It's not perfect, like I don't know if putting the logo for the Planete TV Channel instead of the Planet E label one was a joke or not, or what's up with the "multi genre" category (which seems completely off-topic), but it was a decent start. Only one I saw though.

I'll be honest, I don't even know if it's possible to make "essential" charts for these genres, there's so much stuff to check out all the time. Which is a good thing, but I suppose it can be discouraging for people who want to "go through the classics" like they do with rock etc.
