I think a big issue with pop punk is that it tries to mesh two conflicting worlds: on the one side, you have punk rock: a genre that started as a counter point to establishment. And on the other pop: catchy, status quo. From a musical stand point, not THAT hard of a mix, but from a cultural perspective, it's hard to get an audience as both sides often alienate the other.
