Metallica is technically somewhat distinctive for a thrash band but not for a good reason. The songwriting involved in their music is pretty simple stuff. Most thrash bands are a lot more sophisticated in the songwriting area than Metallica unless it's Slayer or a Slayer ripoff band.

But obviously they've changed in the years they've traveled off from thrash and it's somewhat disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I love the 90s stuff, hell even St Anger is kinda cool in some places. Death Magnetic was a nice step towards the right direction.

What's honestly the most disappointing for me in how they've changed is not Jaymz' voice, not Kirk's excessive use of wah, not the shift in genre, not essentially forcing Jason to quit, hell not even the Napster thing.

What's really got to me the most is their fucking tone. Holy SHIT what happened? Why are their guitars sounding so flimsy and wet? Why does Lars mic his kit the way he does and why does it sound so shitty live?
Why does Robert's bass practically bleed through everything along with the bass drums now?

Their newer tone is more mids. The old tone is more scooped but it probably sounds dated now and I do agree the newer tone is a bit weak.

I think it's ok. What really shits me is how bad their recent production sound is. Especially Lars' drums, they just sound like shit. Like from Death Magnetic onwards i.e. DM + Beyond Magnetic + When a Blind Man Cries + Lords of Summer etc their sound is shit. It's like Lars' drums don't even go through a compressor or any reverb. It sounds so basic and shit. Hopefully the next album will actually sound nice. More like the black album or something. They should hire Flemming back as even just an engineer

Hetfield is a tighter rhythm guitarist. His double and even quad takes are pretty much perfect. No one else can do that as well as Hetfield.

Friedman is a more unique guitarist than Hammett but Hammett wrote better solos than Marty. Fade to Black solo > Tornado of Souls solo any day. Kirk on RTL to AJFA was god tier.

If we want to do the overdone Metallica/megadeth comparison i would say that megadeth is better for guitars(in general), drums and pure thrash songwriting, while metallica being better for singing and non-thrash songwriting. Both had good bassists with solid basslines ( excluding AFJA where the bass is unhearable )

Do you even play guitar? As far as thrash goes that song is really not very hard to play on guitar. Dyers Eve is far more challenging imo. As far as Megadeth goes both Poison Was The Cure and Black Friday are much harder.

Skolnick is a better lead guitarist than both Marty & Kirk tbqh. Chris Poland too.
