it had some good songs and is very original regardless of the 'simplicity' that critics bring up. some of the most critically acclaimed albums using basic song structures, simple melodies but are still able to convey emotion. this album is a gem in the formulaic hip hop culture. no other artist could pull this off

people didnt like it for 2 reasons:

well if you dislike when musicians 'whine' then you must hate the most music. The guitar playing is not as terrible as people say. The problem is most people who 'review' this music primarily listen to hiphop and dont have a sense of where cudi is coming from with this music. beefheart played the guitar poorly and that was part of his charm. you dont need nifty solos to make cool sounds on a guitar.

and i like the singing. he has a soulful voice.

Yes, multiple times. Music doesn't have to continually follow the same formula. He wanted to try something different. Was it great? No. But it was listenable, and I can understand where he's coming from.

yup, several times. i dont love it, but it is not nearly as terrible as people make it out to be. its too long and many songs are filler but there is good material on here. Embers, Adventures, title track, Edge of the Earth, Red Sabbath and Screwed are all songs I enjoy. there arent many albums with the same vibe. the reflexive disgust toward this album is pretentious and misunderstood
