it's interesting because like, there have been a lot of rock bands I like that have de-evolved into synthpop bands towards the end of their career (see: Queen) but ironically with ELO I find their earlier rock stuff kinda boring and their synthpop era is when they hit their stride

their music gives me kind of a fluttery feeling with how it mixes 50s doo wop and blues rock with 80s synth, a full string section, and idealistic, romantic lyrics. Their sound is just so light and airy and magical. Probably one of my favorite albums of theirs is New World Record.

also check out Zoom. it's particularly good because

a) it's one of the only albums made by an old band years after their heyday that's actually pretty good

b) the album is almost entirely a solo album by jeff lynne and there's a part right before a guitar solo where he says "take it, jeff!" and then plays the solo himself
