almost any of their albums could be their best honestly, but draft is definitely up there
the only albums excluded are incunabula and quaristice

Chiastic Slide is. Best beats, best samples, best textures, best song [Nuane].

Consistent with Autechre's previous works, Draft 7.30 (Warp, 2003) didn't break any new ground but sounded like a self-indulgent revisitation of old ideas. Theme of Sudden Roundabout sounds simplistic at best. Xylin Room, V-Proc and IV VV IV VV VIII are mere reprocessing of Autechre cliches. However, the 11-minute Surripere ranks among their most intriguing musical metamorphoses, constantly off-center but also constantly focused.
>>
>>61583523
sorry mate, incunabula (mostly) sounds super dated and not in a good way, and quaristice has a 7.5/10 album in it if combine the best stuff from the various versions
basscadet is still one of their top tracks tho
>>61583627
"meme"
>>
>>61583778
i don't think it sounds that dated really. i mean, it does, but more in a nostalgic way. the drums are almost hassell like on that album - almost primitive but contrasted with what sounded like (at the time) super futuristic synths. there's nothing from the period that sounds exactly like it, because not many others in the first wave idm movement were incorporating a hip-hop sensibility. put into context, it's absolutely groundbreaking. it sounds more "autechre" to me than amber does, which, while great, seems to have tried to fit into the mold a bit more in terms of the ambient techno scene (apart from tracks like piezo or teartear).

i totally disagree on quaristice - i think it's better than untilted.
>>
>>61584222
That's actually completely fair, but the dated sound on most of the songs still kills it for my personal enjoyment (which is odd considering I find Lego Feet to be great.) Also, nice digits.

I'm kidding, they're all right. In the grand scheme of things probably their best work is a 6/10. Maybe a 7/10. But that's pushing it.
>>
>>61584651
yeah, i mean it all comes down to taste. i think it's pretty ace that there seems to be no general favorite or "essential" album with most ae fans (as opposed to writers who seem to only ever whine about how all their albums aren't trirep). also agree with you on lego feet - maybe it sounds less dated because there's more emphasis on rhythm as opposed to synths?

I like those guys, but I don't get why they're always brought up in relation to Autechre or other dance music where a big part of the appeal is emphasis on rhythm and groove. At least bring up Subotnick who's a bit more analogous.

>>
>>61587049
No, I don't think it's challenging. I like their tunes and alternate and their sometimes odd take on hip-hop (I'm not going to get that from Varese). I like the timbres they play with and I like what they with drum programming. That's it.
>>
>>61587049

It's your ideology that solidifies genres m8, not those who listen because it sounds good to them.
>>
>>61587113
left my computer so no links but theyre easy to find:

Nono - La Nostalgica Futurist
or whatever

Stockhausen - Kontakte

Boulez - Repons, Anthemes 2

Xenakis - Persepolis
>>

like I said yeah, theyre like a 6 or 7 out of 10

Why would you listen to all their albums if you hate them so much?

That's some serious dedication to music you hate.

>>
>>61587363
I used to have much narrower taste in both classical and popular music.
over the years Ive expanded it.
>>
>>61587420
I called them good electronic music mainly but they are definitely MORE challenging than autechre
>>
>>61587199
I don't quantify or appraise music based on a linear objective scale so I don't really relate much to your "6 or 7" but whatever.

I just find it odd that you bring up those composers when they don't really seem to be paralleled in what Ae are trying to do (apart from maybe Confield). They've always been about taking a wildstyle graffiti approach to club music and hip-hop and abstracting it just a bit, but still keeping those roots their as a tether. Even on Quaristice and Exai you can still see the innate leanings to Detroit techno/electro and the Miami bass scene. That's where the appeal is for a lot of people, not in the super experimental or electroacoustic-type techniques, though I think they can do that well at times (though not as well as the pioneers maybe, and obviously not as innovative).

I don't think I'm patrician because that would be comparing my knowledge to people like David Hurwitz, and there's no comparison there.

>>
>>61587647
how is autechre much like stockhausen? that's such a watered-down comparison. is stockhausen's work mostly concerned with beat patterns and rhythms? are autechre largely concerned with serialism or formalism? autechre's music isn't even all that aleatoric if that's the angle you're going for.

and scaruufi? jesus i hope you're joking.

>>61587785
again, a lot of people like ""''idm'''''' because it's an alternate take on club music. you don't get that with electroacoustic music.

how could he rate their best album a 5
>>
>>61587936
i've listened to both quite a bit and i even used to like untilted more. i think the production is better on quaristice (untilted is too dry for me) and i've never like ae as much when they are both fast AND complex with their drums - it borders on too stereotypically "idm" for me.

i still like untilted, but i just find quaristice more intriguing.

>>61587976
my point is that the parameters are actually very, very narrow. what is actually left to chance is something like maybe 5%. confield was a bit more generative (as they were kind of new to it) but after that they meticulously construct the patches where they can read the conditionals and have a pretty good idea of what the track will sound like. they've talked about it in a few of their interviews. yes it's aleatoric a bit, but not as much as people perceive. i legitimately don't see why stockhausen is always brought up with them - if anything i hear more dockstader.

Best work in a while, I reckon. I like Nagano a lot at the moment. I love the "track" that's in most of these sets that has bells in it or something.

I've never really wrapped my head around LP5. Most of the tracks are very good -even classic- but as a full album the whole thing never comes together. It's strange. I feel the opposite of Quaristice, that album ONLY works if you listen to it all the way through.
