The people you describe are the people that would hop on to any bandwagon or turn their back against anything if it meant fitting in aka poseurs aka pedestrians. Like you describe, they care more about the perceived image/"brand" than the art. There's nothing you can really do about them and they will always exist everywhere. No doubt some of them tried to listen to DG, but lacked the required training to actually appreciate it.

My love for Death Grips contains no hint of irony. I just don't see the point with the bullshit. The fact that this meme dilemma actually seems to exist is pretty funny.
