Reminder that roughly 50% of the world's population are of below average intelligence.
The relationship between art music and intelligence is purely one of correlation as opposed to causation. It's usually based on factors of wealth and socioeconomic status
Also I love the sneak diss on existentialism
Well, I'm sure there is evidence somewhere but it's honestly pretty intuitive
Those with access to "high culture" (usually those with a bit of wealth and a rather high place in society) can afford to attend concerts of art music, be parts of larger orchestras (those instruments and tuitions don't come cheap), and generally are expected to have a higher knowledge of that music as whole
As another part of this, this group also undoubtedly has a greater access to education and sources of learning, such as more advanced schools, programs, and tutors
What it boils down to is that art music in itself does not make you erudite; it is simply the common case that those who are intelligent also happen to listen to art music. I've seen several exceptions both ways, so it's definitely not an objective or universal rule
I'm sorry, but personal intuition is not a convincing argument. To get the initial claim out of the way, here's proof of the correlation between instrumental music and IQ:
>Those with access to "high culture" (usually those with a bit of wealth and a rather high place in society) can afford to attend concerts of art music
You can listen to a vast wealth of Classical and Avant-Garde music for free.
That's an interesting article but according to it, big band is more linked with intelligence than art music is, which means the "complexity" and "analysis" of the music has little to do with it (as well as the fact that the preference for gospel is below that of rap). And on top of that, I've never seen anyone make one of these threads for big band
Just to clarify, I also listen to art music, but I want to address the fact that art music in itself does not enhance your intelligence in any way, shape, or form. It is, at most, a correlation, and the study you linked really doesn't disprove any part of what I said
>you can listen to avant-garde music and classical for free
There is a profound difference between someone who plays art music in an orchestra and is formally educated and immersed in it and a person who simply listens to it off the internet
>doesn't disprove any part of what I said
It's up to YOU to substantiate your claims with scientific citations. You can't disprove that God doesn't exist either.
>art music in itself does not enhance your intelligence in any way
Strawman. Nobody claimed that in this thread.
I am the great patrician. There may be no other.
Anyone who even thinks about posting plebeian music on this board will be saged 198 times. Their thread will be shat upon until what is left can be used only to fertilize a field.
Whoever makes an uncited claim or unsupported generalization, or indulges in fallacious reasoning and tries to pass it off as a legitimate argument, will be ridiculed for 155 posts.
If I, CLT, want the plebeians to fall dead from their chairs... then the plebeians will fall dead from their chairs.
I am the wrath of god. The OPs I pass see me and tremble.
Whoever follows me, and listens to the best music, will win untold riches. But whoever deserts...
This is 4chan, bro
STEM MASTER RACE, I ONLY LISTEN TO WESTERN ART MUSIC EVEN THOUGH I DON'T ENJOY IT THAT MUCH. ANYTHING POPULAR IS BAD BECAUSE IT REMINDS ME THAT I CAN'T GET LAID
Well, the article itself said there was only a correlation between the two, and a correlation is open to confounding variables. Hence, this result of a study linking both wealth and education (two factors tied to one another) for preference of classical, jazz, etc.
Other report of the same study:
Also, the point I was making with "it doesn't make you intelligent" is that you can't really claim any high ground of intelligence and wealth simply because of a common correlation between the type of music you listen to and a certain level of intelligence. That's simply a fallacy
Music listening is inherently emotional an has little to do with how smart you are.
Even an idiot can appreciate the most complex music.
If you want to find a correlation between music and intelligence, start with the artists, not the consumers.
>Reminder that roughly 50% of the world's population are of below average intelligence.
But that's wrong
You're not accounting for people who are exactly average intelligence
You mean roughly 50% are below the median
Fucking retarded weeb
not to mention most of the population is within one standard deviation of the median meaning the majority of people have an IQ between 90 and 110. guessing OP took a facebook quiz that said he had a 157 IQ and no doubt believes he is of superior intelligence.
>You mean roughly 50% are below the median
I waited for this comment when I made the thread.
Median and average are _exactly the same_ in a Gaussian distribution. IQ follows a Gaussian distribution.
>Fucking retarded weeb
I will not stoop to your level and instead remain comfortably content with my superior knowledge :-)
>Anyway, this proves nothing, probably most people are below average
