Flex the jaw muscles when the riffs are heavy edition
Old thread :
the cover reminds me a lot of Stone Titan's Scratch n Sniff, at least in it's theme, same genre too
good album, not much else to say about it, certainly not near as good as Scratch n Sniff but w/e
Death/doom is cool
Anal cunt - It, You're a metal band
"you're not fucking hardcore, you're not avant-garde
you're not punk rock, you're just a fucking retard
you're not something special, you're not something new
you're not fucking good, face it you're a metal band"
We're all fucking plebs
So from lurking a bit it seems /metal/ is mostly dark and angry. What do you guys think of power metal? Do you enjoy the cheese? What's your favourite cheese?
If I'm in a very light mood I listen to pic related.
That didn't happen since more than two years 2bh
This is a question, probably should had included a "?"
I only sort of dig the middle two tracks. Metallica is such a bore to slog through. It's a shame because I do dig heir new vocals, if only I Am God Songs had those instead of bordering on deathcore vocals.
Please tell me there's more good-ass space sludge in the same vein as Rosetta's debut and Dirge.
Love the sound on "Morphea". It's the essence of crushing doom.
Anyone here to praise Dark Millennium with me?
"Transcendence Into the Peripheral" is one of my all time favs (hell I've written a rev on MA), but I've never heared of Mourning Beloveth. Checking them atm.
This is pretty fuckin groovy my man! Thank you. Wish it had some more 'hardcore' influence but the groove is THERE!
I hear almost no Djent influence. MAYBE the guitar tone but the timing so far all seems rather avg.
I'm not sure what you mean by clench your jaw but I assumed that was a good thing. Cradle of Filth - Absinthe with Faust
He was a predator, creditor cold
Our blood was shed on the yellowing scroll
And all that glittered was not gold
But we wanted everything
And for it all, lost our souls
Come my friend, to fate let's raise
Two finger shots at this our last soiree
For tomorrow I fear
Swoops all too deadly near
This precipitous weir to Hell's high gate
I don't really like The Astral Sleep and Clouds. Not sure why, but the vocals and the overall style just doesn't appeal to me very much. Wildhoney however is damn great. Not an everyday listen, but absorbing in it's atmosphere. Maybe it's also because I have very vivid memories connected with it.
post good atmoshit you've been enjoying lately.
Got into music by listening to Rhapsody of Fire. Mostly dropped the power metal scene altogether but I still listen to Freedom Call from time to time and boy, the cheese never stops flowing.
Yea man exactly, half way through and it's crushing heavy with massive grooves. Let's put it this way, it's 9am and this album made me open a beer.
The lads are gunna eat this one up.
was surprised by how good this one actually is. although the middle track is a bit weird.
other than that I've been nonstop listening to Paysage d'Hiver again. still unrivalled in atmosphere
Yeah - the singing style isn't great in The Astral Sleep. Still I really like this song form it.
I'm more a fan of Prey from what I've heard of them though. I'll give Wildhoney a listen sometime - it seems to be the one people go on about.
Same guy with the Admiral Angry rec, I can't get a youtube link since I'm Germany but look up Path of Reflection by Culture Killer. Serious groove.
Also throwing this in because I've never seen them discussed here on /metal/:
Whats the opinion on Harm's Way?
Cheese is awesome, but you need the riffs to back it up. On average I like USPM a lot more than Euro, but I do love Blind Guardian and Lost Horizon.
All metal is cheesy in its own way, though. Listening to something like Incantation doesn't feel any less goofy to me than BG.
Digging some Pan.Thy.Monium
I'm not enjoying it quite as much as most others seem to do, though. Maybe that'll change.
Boring? That's the least term I'd use to describe it. Dawn of Dreams features complex compositions, synthies, a saxophone, jazz-influenced riffs and some weird ambient parts.
Though I guess I'll never like it as much as the holy grail of prog metal, "A Social Grace" by Psychotic Waltz.
tfw just dont have the time for music anymore
Into the trash it goes.jpeg
"Diana Read Peace" just captures everything weird but good about the mid-90s death metal scene. The big hype was over and then there were talented musicians just doing what nobody else did. It's hard to describe what exactly makes this album stand out, but I haven't heard anything like it.
tfw one likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah
Nice meme, I know you're sitting there wiping tears from laughter, but you had to write that assblasted reply just because I insulted your favourite bands
>OYY VEYY DIS SHABBOS GOY NOT FUNNY AT ALL
>mfw there's now a k-pop metal band that's an obvious ripoff of babymetal
The riffs are damn special. The songs as a whole aren't centred around them, so they take the chance and do everything different. What would be considered a guitar solo for other bands is just a regular riff in the background here. The use of pinch harmonics is phenomenal and the whole timing just as well. This could be called "precision", as the two guitars are often playing very different things which are exactly written to complement each other.
It took me months of frequent listening to really "get" all of the songs, and even now, years later, I discover new things.
Just compare it to "The Spectre Within" by Fates warning. It's somewhat like the cover artworks. TSW has a clean but unique style with fantasy-themed lyrics. ASG on the otherhand is layered and complex like no other album, weird, eccentric, psychotic.
I don't like their attitude. Angry everyman style. They try to be over the top but they are in fact so grounded that they don't resonate with me at all. Riffs and guitar sound are cool though.
best atmospheric band out there, alongside elderwind, melankoli, and lustre
I do. Don't really understand most of the hate for them, since they're super creative and Phil sings about a lot more than just toughguy posturing
Wildhoney is probably the most overrated gothic metal album of all time (I really love most work by other big bands like type O, PL, MDB and Moonspell), A Deeper Kind of Slumber is ok, the rest is not worth bothering with.
>mfw I found out Phil Anselmo plays guitar on the most fucked up death metal album of all time
he sounds a lot more like Martin van Drunen than Chuck
of course it makes sense that RYM would only be able to assess a death metal vocalist by how they compare to Le Godfather of Death Metal
Really solid neo-prog album
I always found PTH a bit overrated
Rank the following bands from best to worst:
>Bring Me the Horizon
>Blood on the Dance Floor
>I Declare War
All some of my favorite bands, barring Blood on the Dance Floor and select Whitechapel albums.
Someone posted it in the previous thread and it's pretty good t b h
I'd never listened to I Declare War before and I did and I don't get why they're lumped together with the rest of them in this B8 post. They're not nearly as bad as the rest of them.
It's neo-prog, what did you expect
last metal I listened to was this, it was ok
Here's cheese for people who don't like cheese
I fucking love Running Wild, Scanner and Manowar. pic related is one of the best albums ever:
some ambient techno thingy
it's pretty nice
reminds me of old Arcturus logo, only this one's lame and tame photoshop tier
I've listened to this at least 5 times in the past week
It's not even that good, there's just something about it that keeps pulling me back.
Man, Node was easily the best metalcore release of 2015.
I don't know what magic Northlane has at they're disposal but they're selfish for not sharing it with the rest of the genre.
So I'm working on an online quiz.
The jist of it is this: you'll hear samples of black metal.
Your job is to correctly identify the sample.
There will be 2 versions, a multiple choice version and kvlt version where you type in your guess (I'll be sure to correct for capitalization and a reasonable level of misspelling for the Brazilians out there).
My hypothesis is this: shitters cannot tell the difference between most black metal at fucking all.
I honestly feel like /mu/ hates Lana Del Rey for the sole reason that she has a huge following on tumblr. If she didn't she'd probably be the next Grimes.
Nightwish is on the same level as Alestorm for me.
Not really good music, but fun as fuck to listen to every once and a while
>All those memories drinking with the bros while blasting Nightwish and Alestorm
Make sure to have no lyrics in there and watch unkvltvred swines stumble on pointing out which Darkthrone song is which
I am excited for the new Dream Theater album and none of your insults will change that
if that's true, then it doesn't make sense to separate the things that make music good from the things that make it enjoyable. You should expand your idea of what makes music good if you find yourself enjoying something that you'd normally consider bad
I think the only way that it makes sense to say that you enjoy a bad piece of music is if music is actually objective, in which case most of the music we listen to on this board would be considered a guilty pleasure by patrician standards
I don't know if I would call it sick as fuck, I did like it a lot more than most of the stuff on the last couple albums but I don't think it's I&W tier
If that's the average song on this new album then I am really pumped, because I could use THIRTY THREE more songs of that caliber
I just listen to what I like and keep an open mind to new things.
I really couldn't care less if the music I like is "good or bad" from an objective standpoint, nor do I care what others think of the music I like. I like it and it's all the matters.
stuff like this, i get that the majority of people thinks abrasive wubwubs are cringe or something but i don't know why
Yeah I didn't really like Dramatic Turn all that much, ST was probably the low point so far. I guess I kinda liked the Rush ripoff song a little, and the radio song wasn't awful, but man was it just mediocre
Black Clouds was actually surprisingly good, I hope the new one can live up to that
Really, because I thought ADToE was a step or two in the right direction for the band, and then the ST shit all over it.
It didn't even sound like a Rush rip-off, it sounded like Avenged Sevenfold mixed with Three Days Grace
dude fuck god youknowwhatimsayin
ALL THE DRUGS IN THIS WORLD WON'T SAVE HER FROM HERRRSELLLLFFF
I'M NOT A SLAAAVE TO A GOD THAT DOESN'T EXXXIIISSSTT

The munster isn't that hardcore t b h
Dream theater is roquefort to me : it's cheese, it is supposed to be muh special and different but it turns out to taste bad
I TEAR MY HEART OPEN I SEW MYSELF SHUT

SO TELL ME NOW IF THIS AIN'T LOVE THEN HOW DO WE GET OUUUT????!??
Does Colored Sands count as Avant-Garde Death Metal? I don't think I've ever really understood the differences between experimental, technical, progressive and avant-garde since they very often seem to be used interchangeably. Paracletus is another album where I'm wondering the same thing. Is it avant-garde or just technical/progressive/whatever?
Some people get super butthurt about using the term avant-garde for whatever reason so tread carefully.
I would say that Colored Sands is just technical death metal; it's really not avant-garde at all since they just rehashed themselves and dumbed down their sound.
>I don't think I've ever really understood the differences between experimental, technical, progressive and avant-garde since they very often seem to be used interchangeably.
essentially they're buzzwords, especially "experimental" and "avant-garde" which don't have any coherent basis style-wise
Sure some people might use those words disingenuously, but they generally have meaning. If something is "avant-garde metal," to me, all that means is that the band plays something that's certainly metal, but it doesn't fit into any pre-existing styles or genres. Experimental is more or less the same thing although I generally don't see it as "out there" as avant-garde.
does stuff nobody has ever done before
Is composed in a way that defies classification.
It's just a skill show-off
that's an established genre
this is still good after all these years

Best Pantera Album coming through
I honestly hated this the first time I listened to it, but every time I listened to it it grows on me a little more.
Anyone else experience the same thing?
Speaker setup anyone?
Thinking of getting some bookshelf speakers (BX2 + amp) but not sure if bookshelf speakers can bring out punch of DM/BM or the heavy overtures of drone (would a subwoofer make a diff or go up in speakers?).
