What's your local DIY/house show scene like /mu/? Do you guys even go to house shows, or is it just something the local 16 year olds do? Are there a lot of cute grils?
>>
>>61545247
Guess I'll start.

I live in a pretty small college town with a lot of young people both in and out of school, so the scene is mostly 18-25, not many high schoolers.

Pretty much everything is punk/grunge or weird psych shit. Funny thing is, every show turns into a "decade party" where it seems like people are trying to co-opt styles from other generations and shit.

It's a weird phenomenon...
>>
Yall got nothing?
>>
The one in Orange County is terrible.

Mostly high schoolers with only a handful of people over 18-25. Most of the people there are insufferable, middle-class libtards who keep cucking Bernie Sanders (I'm not /pol/ btw). I've only meet 3-4 people there who are actually tolerable. The girls are cute, but they're all taken and most of them are third-wave feminists.

Most of the bands are math rock, midwestern emo, shoegaze, and post-rock and attending enough house shows almost makes me hate all of those genres. Not to mention that everyone ironically likes pop punk (I think it's a California thing).

There's one in Riverside county which is more tolerable. They occasionally host noise shows so fuck yeah. They still have that retarded ethos, but it's not as evident.
>>
>>61546047

Lol, I thought you were gonna shit on Burger since you're OC. Pretty much the entire scene over there is horrible, but I still go to the burger shows with a denim jacket because that's all it takes to fuck drunk qts. Know what you mean about Riverside too, some of the bands I know coming from out there know their shit about music, memes and diy synthesis but the caveat is they are all cokeheads.
>>
Richmond VA has one of the best local DIY scenes in the country. RVA rules.
>>
I live in St. Louis, I don't think we have one.
>>
>>61545247
They should be called Semen and the Demons
>>
>>61546134
Oh I fucking hate Burger too! The bands are shit!

I'm up in Temecula but I think I might've run into a few cokeheads at the noise shows.
>>
>>61545247
its just 16 year olds. i'd rather not get involved with that.
>>
>>61546047
Pop-punk and surf punk are definitely CA things. Not gonna lie though, it's mostly what I listen to. After spending the holidays on the East Coast and having people constantly point out when I said certain obscure things like that, I'm starting to feel like a walking Californian stereotype.
>>
>>61546288
Don't even fucking mention FIDLAR and surf punk in general. I just want to move to LA already.
>>61546168
I'm interested. Explain?
>>
Tacoma, WA has an amazing scene.

Chicks, parties, all types of bands, and booze.
>>
baltimore here. fairly active diy community here. theres always some show going on. usually well worth the $5 charge too.
>>
>>61546360
How's Seattle, though? I'm graduating soon and would really like thinking about moving up there. One of the things I'll miss most in this town is the music scene. Great acts and great people.
>>
>>61545247
These scenes don't exist in any appreciable way in Canada outside of Toronto :.(
>>
>>61546325

Kill yourself-- it doesn't need to be more gentrification, let alone more punks with daddy bucks like FIDLAR
>>
LV Downtown Project is 'aight

Not much going on. People are mostly into mainstream shit.
>>
>>61546566
>daddy bucks
A surf punk band in my town has a member whose dad is the fucking lead of one of the biggest punk bands of all-time. And they suck, but "Daddy's fame" has gotten them record deals and nationwide fame. Fuck them.
>>
>>61546566
I'm not calling for gentrification. Maybe I should move somewhere else then. Then again, Agent Orange is not a bad band.
>>
>>61546645
Agreed. Fuck them too.
>>
I just moved to Yonkers, so no idea. Would appreciate it if an anon could tell me about some local houses or "coffee shops" in the area, would go to NYC or the Islands if necessary.

Trying to play R&B, Chamber Pop, Soft Rock, Blues Rock.

Need to make new friends, the isolation after so long isn't doing any good for my mental health.
>>
>>61546653
LA is fucking massive and has some pretty big income differences across the board. That kid talking about gentrification is a dumbass and probably knows nothing about California
>>
>>61546722
That's pretty true. I wouldn't want to move near Hollywood. Where would a guy who enjoys harsh noise, neofolk, stoner rock and prog live in LA?
>>
>>61546722
Enlighten us then

>>61546757
Downey
>>
I live in Cincinnati and people always give this place shit for being boring but the underground music scene is the most exciting thing I've been a part of in a long time. Everything from hardcore punk and grindcore, to doom and sludge metal, to drone and psych, to tons of talented weirdo rappers. There are plenty of venues in Northside and Clifton, many apartments and houses that regularly have shows. The support is amazing, people show up to every event and there are plenty of regulars including myself at one point. They range anywhere from 15 years old to about mid 50s. This scene is truly a sight to see and its really fun to be a part of it and watch it grow.
>>
the only foot I have in the door of vegas' diy/indie scene in is the hip-hop scene. it's alright, a lot of trendy shit but there's a dude i'm talking to who produces and raps with a danny brown influence

anyone else in vegas?
>>
>>61546879
Holy yes yes another Cincinnatian. I thought I was the only one that loved our weird little scene. Who's your favorite local band right now?
>>
>>61546879

So jelly dude, i believe you
I've been trying to book Wild Gunman for years but I heard they just get too loaded to play:

https://youtu.be/vd9R1FMlqN8
>>
>>61545247
Minneapolis/St. Paul

It's bearable but it suffers from everything >>61546047 mentions except the crowd is usually 20+. It gets boring listening to the same type of people making the same kind of music all night. Hard to find any experimental scene around here.
>>
Pretty active DIY basement scene in Toronto, especially in the punk/hardcore scene.
I'm a Jazz guy though so I'm pretty much only at these things for a friend's gig
>>
>>61546811
Thanks. I was thinking Van Nuys but that works too.
>>
>>61546569
oh shit, never heard of this. what's it about? checking the site for it now but I don't see too much about music here.
>>
>>61546924
yeah. i'm >>61546569

I'm more into the post-punk scene here in vegas. it's ok.
>>
>>61547097

Dude if you move to Van Nuys everyone in LA will call you a fag for living in the Valley
>>
>>61547123
I thought that the only music that came from LV is shitty indie pop a la Imagine Dragons.
>>
>>61546168
Unlike the NOVA DIY scene which is absolute garbage.
>>
My local scene was great until literally today when the pub/venue as forced to close because some rich cunt bought the building it's in to it knock down in order to build a bunch of luxury flats for other rich cunts to do rich cunt things in.
>>
>>61547174
I guess the same will go for Encino, Reseda, Tarzana and Glendale then as well. Downey or Silverlake for me, it is.
>>
>>61546514
lol but toronto sucks and montreal, edmonton and halifax have scenes and do it well>>61546514
>>
>>61547191
I think this might be because vegas is primarily a party city? there are a shit ton of nightclubs on the strip, and with how many smaller casinos there are dotted around the entire city, DJs are mostly what to expect.

the biggest bands that I can recall from vegas are imagine dragons and the killers..... which fit the "shitty indie pop" bill
>>
I live in Memphis. There's a dude here who hosts art galleries and gigs from his house and it was pretty fun. First there was a noisy garage rock band called Loser Vision and then there were these guys who played a four hour ambient drone set while everyone chilled it was pretty neato.
>>
>>61547307
apparently fucking ne-yo and escape the fate are from vegas

not sure how to feel about this
>>
>>61546360
How are people finding out about local shows? Facebook pages?
>>
>>61547253

Are there not enough armenians where you live?
https://youtu.be/D4T1MqEqCeU
>>
>>61546209
There's a big experimental scene and a lot of hardcore and noise rock. There's also a big pop punk and Ska contingent, but I can't stand that shit. Check wrongdivision for a good concert calendar of more obscure shows.
>>
>>61547418
Actually no, but that's not the reason why I want to move there.

There are a lot of Armenians in L.A. though.
>>
>>61545247
the chicago diy scene is almost exclusively shitty punk bands patronized exclusively by bearded hipsters who do / wish they did go to saic, and smoking hot alternababes heavily invested in identity politics.

good place to get your dick wet but not to find music or a gf.

>>61547213
I moved to NoVa from Manchester, England earlier last year and yeah the DIY scene sucks compares to back home
>>
>>61546954
For punk, DSA, Boltcutter, and though not technically from Cincinnati, White Cop put on one hell of a show. Evolve is my favorite hip hop act I've seen. I also enjoy Zjinzjin Zjinzjin for some interesting drone/noise/post rocky stuff. Flesh Mother and former Utopiate now Gaping Maw are heavy as fuck.
>>
>>61547590
yes, it's basically irl tumblr

Any mention of these in the DC area? I go to UMD and would love to pass through something like this.
>>
>>61546488
word? I'm in DC (same as >>61548338 )
but I'm going to Baltimore to visit family soon. Any leads or anything like that? Don't know if you wanna exchange info
>>
Who Boston here? I wanna get involved but I don't know much about the scene. Although I've been to a couple really cool house shows before.
>>
>>61547123
>post-punk scene here in vegas
literally what. i cant think of one post punk band from here.
>>
>>61547734
Thanks for these, going through them now. Zjijzjin Zjinzjin seems pretty good so far.

I'm more into the lighter garage pop and punk side of things, so I don't know if you will care about any of these, but my personal favorites are Everyday Objects, Vacation, Bad Matches, and Black Planet. It's kind of amazing how much activity there is for a place not really noted for much

Hey! I live in Vegas, moved out here for work after college (been here 2 years, I am 25). Any good venues or other cool local music scene shit here? I feel like there isn't a lot compared to CA but maybe that's because I have a small network here and I'm the only music enthusiast. Also lookin for cool bars (been to Double Down, Frankies, Golden Tiki, Velveteen Rabbit, Atomic). Theres a new bar on Fremont that's pretty cool called Oddfellows. I can't tell if it's a gay bar or not...

I've been to a few shows at Beauty Bar (Ty Segall, Oh Sees, Com Truise), one at Bunkhouse (Built to Spill), & two at Sayers Club (Melvins, Yo La Tengo). Pissed that I missed Melt Banana due to Bunkhouse closing :(
>>
>>61546209
You do, trust me. I can tell because a bunch of shit garage bands from St. Louis come down to Carbondale to play our basements. I like Bruiser Queen though.
