Who were they really? What's their best album? Is Ozzy a filthy wife beater? etc.
best photographed metal band in the world
Black Sabbath's best vocalist was Ronnie James Dio , and the best album was Heaven And Hell , Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the second best.
Tony Martin was also pretty good
He aged exceptionally well even into his 60s. There's footage of his last concert (August 2009) on Youtube. Some shitbag Phillyfaggot hocks an Eagles jersey at him on stage and he dodges it like a boss (the dude apparently did it because Dio was a Giants fan).
DIO was a nice change of pace for the band. A lot of Sabbath neophytes give Ozzy waaaaay too much credit. All Ozzy did was sing the lyrics Geezer Butler wrote (which were pretty awesome) but Ozzy had little creative influence in the band.
Dio on the other hand wrote most of the lyrics during the Heaven and Hell era, and it was fucking awesome.
I like Ozzy era Sabbath, but just because it was the formative Sabbath. Dio Sabbath is sooooooo rad.
My collection - forgot my Master vinyl
I just heard he was drunk as a skunk and didn't think there should be a band at all without Ozzy. He did the drumming on Born Again though.
The album Heaven and Hell feature the most beautiful Sabbath songs ever made, and some of the most beautiful rock and roll songs ever. The album features Tony's best solos and Geezer's best bass lines. Truly a remarkable record. Lonely is the Word is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard, it ranks pretty high up there along with Priest's Beyond the Realms of Death.
Ozzy wouldnt have been able to pull off any of the vocals on that album.
Well...Dio loved his witches-and-warlocks schtick since the Rainbow days in the 70s, but as the 80s was beginning, it happened to coincide with then-contemporary pop culture trends.
tl;dr he was just in the right place at the right time
Sign of the Southern Cross is my fav song off Mob Rules, but because of Heaven and Hell and especially Lonely is the Word, Heaven and Hell takes the cake for me.
I'm listening to Lonely is the Word right now. Soooooo awesome.
I have seen Black Sabbath live and I have seen Heaven and Hell live. It was awesome seeing the old crew back together again (minus bill ward of course) and they sounded pretty good. Really good, actually. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
Heaven and Hell was really good too though and Dio was one of the most beautiful musicians ever put on this Earth. I remember I was in Army basic training when I read of his passing, and it really bummed me out.
I don't think I will really give a shit when Ozzy dies, because he is kind of a piece of shit. It really bums me out to think that Tony will die before Ozzy, and that cunt of a woman Sharon Osbourne will try to capitalize off his death...
Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi have always been the backbone of Black Sabbath. I fucking hate sharon
