The beguiling psych-revival release arrived in 1992 under the radar and the

bare outskirts of chart suceess. An anomaly to the band's excessive, perhaps

abrasively edgy debut, the Telescopes' self-titled sophomore is an excercise in

songcraft drawing from the psych and shoegaze aura reminiscent of early Verve

and Loop (sharing a split EP in 1987). Restrained and acoustic, the album's

songs remain more timeless, though obscure, than the contemporaries of the

shoegaze genre. Highlights are the energetic single "Flying" and "Spaceships",

but especially the folk-driven "The Presence Of Your Grace".

Though part of a number of alt-country projects, The Bruces' Alex McManus, being behind Lambchop and Bright Eyes, never gained any momentum from his independent solo releases in the early 2000's. His second album, after the invisible folk release Hialeah Pink, gained only vague traction - a disjointed lyrical roadmap through an image of a decrepit midwest backwater.

Filed under the alt-country label, most highlights, including the tracks "Do Si Do" and "The Cold War", are reminiscent of a more upbeat Vic Chesnutt - McManus' close collaborator. The following tracks remain a unique variation on the genre.
