Shoegaze requires massive amounts of guitar effects and bare minimum of guitar skill. It's the same reason girls are "good" at vapid 3 chord acoustic guitar covers.

Because it's a genre detached from regular criticism, it uses the shield of "well you just don't get it."

I couldn't tell you how many pink-haired brainless girls in Seattle buy some behringers and a black strat and call themselves a shoegaze musician. Literally fucking garbage people inside and out.

Best description I've heard about shoegaze.

It's all aesthetic and predisposed expectations. It says it's deep art from the get go, but has no personality or room for growth.

Kids who sit on /mu/ and obsess over Kanye and Animal Collective only find shoegaze to be amazing because 4 years prior their moms wouldn't buy them urban outfitters shit, and now that they're in college, they use music as an accessory and think they're the pinnacle of obscurity, when EVERY college aged kid listens to NMH, including frat guys.

Go listen to Some John Duncan or Free Diamonds and then you can complain about not being able to connect with people musically.

so damn rong, shoegaze is all about good rhythm guitar. The most important part aren't the effects but the chords, you need catchy, melancholic and still odd chord progressions and good strumming patterns, after that you can care about the guitar tone
