ITT: Albums that you think are the absolute pinnacle of their genre
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU POST A COVER WITH FOIL ON IT YOU STUPID FUCKING SHIT, THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PICTURES WITHOUT IT EVERYWHERE BUT YOU HAD TO COME HERE TO THIS THREAD AND POST A FUCKING. COVER. WITH FOIL, FUCKING FOIL ALL OVER IT, HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S MAKING MY ANGRYADEFSGHTRYE FCUK THIS NEW CAPTCHA
its basically acoustic folk with an avant garde style if you've ever listened to Anco's Sung Tongs then that is what freak folk sounds like
I would say this is the best freak folk album
>basically the same 5 seconds over and over again for like 5 hours?
Oh man, you have no idea how that makes me
The loops develop and change over time with the crumbling magnetic tape, the beauty is in the sprawling evolution and metaphor
sorry man didn't mean to offend, I'll listen to it tonight before I go to bed and see what I think, I love Melancholia after all.
Also Neofolk or Experimental Folk or whatever you call this.
Faust s/t or IV
That ain't neofolk. Fav neofolk would be Thunder Perfect Mind probably
Hissing Fauna or SMiLE Sessions
I'd go with Comus - First Utterance if that's Freak Folk
Also pic related for Death Metal.
>not even his best
That's not a valid counter-argument, it's the only one he did in that genre.
(Also, it is my favourite by him. But that's irrelevant.)
Whatever genre it is, this is definitely it.
It's a great genre, you should dig deeper into it. Shame, one of my favorite albums of all time, what sort stuff do you usually listen to? Have you tried any of the other basics (Vashti, Simon, Exuma)?
It's an unpopular opinion here, but this is a phenomenal album. Tech death surely, but death metal nonetheless.
Okay I haven't heard that one. I think Tech Death is the best Death Metal subgenre when it's good but unfortunately mostly it isn't. Especially the modern djenty stuff, can't stand that shit
drone doom metal (never really liked Sun O))))
listen to ambient 1 it is very clearly rhythmic so i think beats are entirely acceptable in ambient music
Excellent choice OP.
idk if this was posted yet.
even for just tech death this is waaaaay better than antithesis
I believe this to be one of the best post rock / post hardcore albums ever made.
I would go for this one but Untitled is amazing too
cmon, Spiderland is better
I'm a huge oM fan so I struggle to pick a favorite out of PS, HS and The Gay Parade. They're all such great albums. I tend to go with Hissing Fauna simply because it was the first album of theirs I really fell in love with, I have a emotional connection to it and its their most cohesive in my opinion. Authentic Pyrrhic Remission's definitely their best song tho.
Glad your enjoying it dude. Nice to see more love this album recently.
>Just my opinion I hated that album
Nice track. Just Another Diamond Day and Sung Tongs are obvious choices then but I can't help but think you'd prefer something denser and weirder based of that track. Of the top of my head give these a go:
Fire on Fire - The Orchard
Visitations - untitled
Akron/Family - s/t
Natalie Rose Lebrecht - Warraw
Warraws certainly a good pick too
As far as modern psychedelic post-rock goes, this one is the one to end them all.
SOTL is a fine project. Ultimately though, the songs do nothing interesting. Even ambient requires some musical progression, some moment beyond "That string swell, damn.." Otherwise you get nothing but lazy knock-offs of SOTL like AWVFTS. It is a dead-end road.
Avec Laudenum is better anyway. :)
I like newer swans, (to be kind more than the seer), soundtracks for the blind and how i loved you, where do i go next with muh gira?
As a music major, it really gets on my nerves when people pretend to look patrician.
Just because it was an important work in his career does not make it superior to Different Trains. Different Trains is a truer representation of him through its use of tape and manipulations. What's more, he wrote it for a standard ensemble in the classical repertory, the String Quartet. It represented a coming together of classical tradition and his Minimalism; similar to Desert Music.
it's up on what.cd
other than that your next bet would be rutracker, except it comes with a large part of their discography/their entire discography depending, in which case you'd have to select it
looking in the archive I find only dead links. I'll upload it on mega some day but not today
it's not up the archive but i'll upload it some day
hi im a mutant and i don't know any other ylt albums than i can hear the heart beating as one and everything turned itself inside out.
i'm totally unaware of their better work like popular songs, i'm not afraid of you..., and sounds of science
no n0pe no no no
What's wrong with the album?
If you look past the bands fanbase and image, they really do make incredible music.
Using the word "faggot" as an insult is something only the intellectually and emotionally deficient have to resort to.
Vashti is next on my list
Baleen sample makes me feel like I'm naked on a marooned island making a fire contemplating the ego and existence
Long live lsd
Akron isn't what I'm looking for but I'll check the other recs
>ambient (the background kind)
Music for Airports
>ambient (the kosmiche kind)
Structures From Silence
>ambient (the techno kind)
Zauberberg (followed by SAW2)
>ambient (the hip-hop kind)
MHTRTC (followed by cLOUDDEAD)
>ambient (the new kind)
Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again (followed by the OP)
no thanks bby
>he jumped ship on tape manipulations once he realized that he could achieve phase patterns with human performers (Piano Music).
That was more of a phase (hurr) he went through all the same as the tape phase.
>He then returned to tape manipulations as a means of minimal technique after hitting his peak in acoustically-composed minimalism.
Right, after messing with tape, and then messing with humans, he went back to tape.
>But still, you're working on the assumption that tape loops and manipulation are central to Reich's minimalism
I mean, they still are. Look at WTC 9/11.
The main problem is that they do not belong in that genre to start. Which is why he corrected you with one more suitable, though I prefer FYEB from Snowing. And the all time great has to be Analphabetology
Amends, by Fall of Every Season
>ambient doom metal
>is better than Opeth
Good pick, this album has gotten me through more panic attacks than possible.
Pic related for ambient techno.
Drukqs was really mediocre though, the best part of Syro was how the tracks progressed and how much was going on without it being a clueless idiot fiddling some knobs, but yes the tuss might be the best IDM thing he's done
>But if they were both just phases (hurr), then wouldn't their AIM (repetition and phase patterns) be more important than the METHODS
This is true, however I still don't see how this makes MF18M the end-all be all for Reich the same as I don't see Come Out as the end-all be all. He 'mastered' tape and he 'mastered' organic repetition.
>in that it takes a brief (and incomplete) glance back at his previous works and incorporates them as a summary of his development
I wouldn't say incomplete. I would say he incorporates just enough of each element in the piece.
trip hop started in bristol in the 80's with DJs and soundsystems who were influenced by american hip hop of the time (along with dub, jazz, and other genres)
you clearly know nothing though so it's ok
>Drukqs was really mediocre though
I can see where you're coming from. Drukqs can really seem like an unfocused mess at some times, but I personally like how varied and hectic it gets. It sort of reminds me of SAW II and how it'd occasionally have tracks that weren't ambient at all come in out of nowhere. I liked Syro, but I felt like it didn't have the focus of the Tuss or the variety Drukqs had. I'm still hoping he puts some unused live tracks in his next album.
>We're looking for different things in his music, and that has become evident, and we've both stated our cases adequately enough for the other to understand our position (I think).
I'm willing to agree to this.
>Where's muh percussion ?
'Tis a fair point, although again I think it wouldn't have as much profundity in the Western String Quartet setting if it was for "String Quartet, Tape, Two Pianos, and Six Marimbas" or whatnot.
But yeah: "I like this more so fuck you."
It's better than being an asshole and knowing next to nothing about music like most of the /mu/ populace.
I love reading conversations like the one that happened in this thread and would have joined in if I knew anything about minimalism and I didn't feel self conscious about talking with the fellows from /classical/.
I wouldn't really call that art rock, more electronic rock.
Art Rock is more like St. Vincent, David Byrne, Brian Eno, John Cale and some prog rock bands.
In Rainbows could be considered Art Rock, but not Kid A.
Modern Progressive Rock, Experimental Rock, Neopsychedelia, whatever you wanna call it.
Whoops better delete my post, don't wanna get blocked for complaining about our beloved quality moderation team.
And to keep it on topic, my pick for post-punk.
>screencaps of this thread
>not being aware of our archive
There's a good few people in this thread complaining about this anon and none of us are firendo. I'd suggest that people do what
said and report this guy. That's what I've done. Maybe if there's a few of us it'll get noticed and this guy will lose his janitor status or something.
>The Janitor on /mu/ has continually abused his power on /mu/. Just now, he deleted an entire music discussion that involved a member of the community he did not like. As members pointed out this hypocrisy, they too had their posts deleted.
>I request that the Janitor be deprived of his position.
Guys submit this to the Feedback board.
agreed, to me Deloused is the pinnacle of prog post-hardcore as well
Not only the pinnacle of prog metal, but the pinnacle of music too.
Bebop. Such a ridiculous amount of talent on this record. It's like the Travelling Wilburys of jazz but then the album they made was actually fantastic.
>mfw thread would have hit bump limit a good while ago if janitor wasn't deleting posts left right and center
Entertaining to watch though.
Check out the thread on the archive. The janitor deleted a really good, on topic discussion because he doesn't like Friendo. Then he started deleting posts complaining about the deletions. That anon is trying to keep this thread about the shitty janitor and thinks you're him, trying to change the topic.
im actually being serious though.. knew this would happen
The janitor deleted all the post by a ban evader ITT. The posts by the other anon are left intact.
You complaining about getting off-topic from an off-topic discussion is some top quality humor btw.
