I agree Don Cab is the peak, but how can you hate TTNG?
>>
Battles
Hella
Time Machine Modulus
>>
>>51899411

TTNG is pretty tame and boring.

It's just incredibly generic indie rock with fucked up time signatures.
>>
>>51896601
TTNG, Invalids, Legs Like Tree Trunks, Uchu Conbini, I guess Maps & Atlases is p good as well.
Which ones are bad?
>>
>>51899398
Just getting into Hella, what their best album? Already a big fan of HYHI
>>
>>51899311
>opinions
stop acting like yours is the only one

favorites for me:
Clever Girl
The Bulletproof Tiger
Dios Trio
Tera Melos
Toe (only book about my idle plot)
Minus the Bear (only This is what I know about being gigantic)
100 Onces
>>
>>51899435
For me it depends on my mood. If I'm a bit more mellow HYHI is what I would listen to, but when I'm angry or energetic Tripper is the album for me.
>>
>>51899430
TTNG is pretty easy to get into, so I like seeing it on flowcharts for new listeners who might be turned off by Zach Hill
>>
>>51899411
I hate the vocals and I'm not a fan of their guitar noodling
>>
>>51899430
They have plenty of aggressive riffs, not that that is a quality indicator, but I don't find them tame (unless they do it intentionally) or boring.
What I find the most appealing is how Tim's guitar style feels totally unique, especially on Animals.
>>
Thoughts on Battles' vocals? They're used pretty much as an instrument, so I think they add a good layer and aren't particularly distracting
>>
>>51899487
It's not always about the noodle, they do interesting rhythms as well imo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljpkH-MfYTE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63nAyE1as5w
>>
I don't like TTNG
All of the vocalists melodies sound the same to me, there's absolutely no variety in the vocals.

The noodly guitar parts are there but they don't stand out and aren't very catchy like riffs by bands like Clever Girl / The Bulletproof Tiger.

They are impressive but have no strong melody to back them up, just noodles for the sake of noodling. It's like they're more focused on their songs being mathy than sounding good.

They are very bland, especially when compared to other math rock acts like Tera Melos who have their own unique sound thanks to Nick's love of cartoony wonkey sounding pedals. Tera Melos has personality, something TTNG lacks.
>>
>>51899587
>Says TTNG noodles for the same of noodling
>Compares them to Tera Melos, a band that uses a shitload of pedals for the sake of using a shitload of pedals
>>
>>51899623
Nope, if you listen to their records it gives the whole record a consistent unique cartoony sound.

It's not like they use a bunch of random ones otherwise their albums would be inconsistent as fuck
>>
>>51899649
I've listened to their records, I've also seen them live. Their albums are inconsistent as fuck, because they are generally so focused on the way it sounds that what they're actually playing comes off as bland
>>
>>51899587
I definitively agree that the vocals isn't a highlight of the band, I do think it adds more than it detracts though.
But how can you say the riffs aren't catchy? The unique riffs is the best part, there are so many memorable ones that stick in your brain, it's definitively not just noodling for noodlings sake (except the chorus of Adventure, Stamina & Anger, but that's the only one I can think of).
>>
>>51899430
agreed
>>51899311
also agreed, would even go as far as to say that math rock isn't a real genre, just a gimmicky thing
first wave bands are really just great post-hardcore bands
second wave and third wave is just boring gimmicky stuff
>>
>>51899735
What would you define as the different waves?

But yeah that's basically spot on, with a few decent new-ish bands
>>
>>51899682
I've seen them live too
I've also seen TTNG live

Their albums aren't inconsistent except for maybe the melodies album.

X-ed out has a consistent sound throughout because he uses the same pedals on all of the songs. I've watched a video of him describing all of the pedals on his pedal board and there are actually only a handful of them that are really present on the newest record.

TTNG's riffs are way more bland than Tera Melos. I can hear a Tera Melos riff and instantly recognize Nick's style, while TTNG's riffs sound like 1000 other math rock bands.

>>51899683
They just don't stick out to me at all
>>
>>51899785
>TTNG's riffs are way more bland than Tera Melos. I can hear a Tera Melos riff and instantly recognize Nick's style, while TTNG's riffs sound like 1000 other math rock bands.
>They just don't stick out to me at all
I don't understand how you can hear them so differently, I love too Tera Melos and Nick's style as well, managed to catch them in my home town 2 years ago and I was blown away.
But saying TTNG sounds like every other math band? I've listened to plenty of shitty math rock, but none of it sounded like TTNG, the only thing keeping them ahead of all the other bands is the fact that the riffs don't sound like anyone else.
>>
>>51899785
I'm not saying Tera Melos' guitar riffs are less bland than TTNG's, I'm just saying they're still bland. They rely far too heavily on pedals to make it sound good.

Which I guess is fine, but I'd rather just listen to Let us just call it abstract because they use pedals better and their drummer is much better
>>
Hella and Don Caballero
>>
>>51899846
I don't know how I hear them so differently either. It's not that I dislike TTNG.

I really don't like Animals though, I can't stand their old vocalist, he fucking sucked.

I really really like tracks like "two birds, one stone, and an empty stomach". I wish they would do more acoustic tracks. The guitar part in that song is actually really catchy to me.

I feel like I'd like them more if they would just get a good vocalist, or at least one that can write decent vocal melodies.

>>
>>51901610
they're probably the best of the ones listed there but i woudn't call them great. also not quite your typical new-school math rock i would say, not just because they share the guitarist with Don Caballero. Don Caballero is ok.

Math Rock is where Post-Hardcore and Jazz-Fusion intersect. You've got the time changes and virtuosity of hard bop while using rock instrumentation and playing up the dissonance. There's a notable influence from 70's prog as well. It's an incredibly varied genre, but it always highlights technical skill and complexity in song structure, even at slower tempos.
Personal Favourites:

Where to start with Don Caballero?
>>
>all this ttng vocal hate itt
I'm not even a huge fan, but how plen do you have to be to not like Stu or Henry's vocals?
Stu was a lot more theatrical and a bit out there, but is it really that unaccessible?
Henry's a lot more chill and conventional, which suits the new songs since they are a bit more chill and conventional most of the times.
I just find it difficult to actively dislike him when he doesn't do anything crazy
>>
>>51902116
American Don is my favorite, but just start anywhere and skip any of their stuff that came out after American Don
>>
>>51902116
With the first album like you would with any other artist.
>>
>>51902116
What Burns Never Returns > American Don > Don Caballero 2
But Don Caballero 2 might be best to start with, it's a bit more conventional than the other two, which is either a lot more free flowing or a lot more structured.
>>

>>
>>51903588
Some drumming sections and some guitar sounds are exceptionally good, creative and original. But when it comes to the whole album, with it's combinations of rhythm, dynamics, melody, timbre, and structure, it gets exceptionally good through the whole 30 minutes when compared to almost every other Math Rock band. There isn't a single boring moment, because it was intended to have no "empty space", meaning they would replace every "average" moment with an interesting riff.
>>
>>51903703
That's an incredibly stupid way at looking at empty space. If every moment is supposed to be interesting, nothing really feels terribly interesting
>>
>>51903455
he is america's drummer
>>
>>51903751
It might seem weird, but it really manages to get interesting for the whole 30 minutes. Maybe because they combine different types of excitement through the album. Keep in mind they spent around three years making the album, practicing around 6 hours, 4 days a week. I remember they said in an interview they would practive the same ~6 second long riff for hours, non-stop.
