daily reminder that most kids like you think that just because something is complex or technical means that it must be devoid of emotion.

This is asinine.

Sure some complex music is devoid of intent or any emotional connection. There is also some extremely complex and technical music that is highly evocative, emotional and heartfelt.

The two have little to do with each other. Music's complexity, technicality, and emotional impact should all be evaluated as separate and unrelated entities.

Complexity doesn't guarantee that music will be good. It creates the possibility of goodness.

The less complex music is, the more limited it becomes. Complexity creates ways of expanding those limitations.

>>
>>51840677
I consider something with heart complex.

Take the song heroin for example. Only 2 chords not complex at all but it's got heart. So I consider it complex. Or The Beatles or beethoven. Like A day in the life or shes leaving home. 5th 7th and 9th

That's how I define complex.

How would you define it?
>>
>>51840557
The first song is great but the second song hurts my head, how the fuck can you like this shit?
>>
>>51840677
>Complexity doesn't guarantee that music will be good. It creates the possibility of goodness.
The less complex music is, the more limited it becomes. Complexity creates ways of expanding those limitations.

What is different melodies, tones, tempo, harmony, and rhythm?
>>
>>51840557
>MORE NOTES = BETTER MUSIC

I'm going to make a song mashing a bunch of random piano notes and strumming guitars and banging on drums and adding random noises

MORE COMPLEX MEANS BETTER
>>
in this point in music history it is more complex to make a simple song with great emotion than a "complex" and "experimental" song

I would disagree with you.

I think they're completely separate things. I think all the songs you mentioned are good and do have "heart" as you put it. I wouldn't say "Heroin" is very complex though, because it only has two simple chords and a simple melodic line. It's a good song though.

Complexity is really just about how complicated the music is. It can be harmonically, melodically, rhythmically, lyrically complex... etc.

But I see it as a different thing from being heartfelt or having "soul" or whatever you want to call it.

>lyrically complex

This is another thing.

What is lyrical complexity?

Some people consider Bob Dylan to be the greatest lyricist and I would agree but it's because he's got heart. His rhyming isn't all that great compared to rappers like MF DOOM and Nas or eminem. Their rhyming is very complex and has lots of syllables rhyming, much more than bob dylan but more complex doesn't mean better.
>>
>>51840919
What makes judging music based on emotion superior to judging music based on technical quality?

It's subjective, similar to how one likes one genre, and another likes a different genre.

I DONT EVEN LIKE HIP HOP OR METAL FUCK OFF STRAWMAN
>>
>>51840945
>complex doesn't mean better

Exactly.

Even within just the subject of lyricism you can break down different levels of complexity as you say. Rhyming, assonance, dissonance, phrasing, meter, metaphors... there are so many different levels that complexity can work on.

And none of it guarantees the music will be good.
>>
I don't know about all of you, and maybe it has to do with my synesthesia, but I find that music that has many different layers and strange sounds extremely emotionally stimulating, more so than a simple acoustic guitar riff type song. Very layered and complex tracks take me places I've never imagined and makes me feel things I never thought I'd feel
>>
>>51841007
It's the truth though, metal is a stale genre built around wank, which is the worst kind of complexity there is.

Obscura is the only good metal album, the avantgarde jazz influence on the album is obvious.
>>
Expiremental music in 2014 = tone deaf retard with a laptop that wouldn't have been granted the priveledge to showcase music without the internet

Experimental music fans in 2014 = tone deaf retards who don't understand music and why it's good and only listen to it because it's so social engrained in human life now it would be weird for someone not to listen to music
>>
Reminder that the people who perform complex music have spent countless hours mastering their craft and are performing music that will never give them commercial recognition. They do it purely for love of the music.

well most of it is generated by max. i'm talking modern autechre, though. they've gotten more complex and emotionless as their career ages. when they do emotion it's pretty powerful, though. but they don't really do it anymore except on really subtle, encrypted levels.
