seriously? Even aliencore was a way better idea than this

Synthwave is good, soundtrack-inspired fun. Most of the artists are no John Carpenter or Wendy Carlos, but they do recall similar sounds.
Will Lazerhawk ever again create something as awesome as Redline?
THEY'RE GONNA TAKE YOU BACK TO THE PAST, TO PLAY THOSE SHITTY SYNTHS THAT SUCK ASS

Skull and Shark

You know, those people who think music is only "real" if it doesn't have synthesizers? To those who would say such things I say a total fuck you, man.
>>51836921
Tomorrow's Harvest was much better than any of this 'retro' synthwave shit and it wasn't even a particularly great album.
>>51837471
>>51837638
Skull and Shark is mostly great, in some respects even better than Redline, but it has a few passages I find incongruous and/or dull.
>>51836867
Oceangrunge is faux-retro, but few to no synths involved.
IT IS NOT CALLED OUTRUN
AND KAVINSKY'S SHIT IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GENRE
What are the best 2014 releases I can check out?
>>51837376
Redline gets pretty weak after the first few tracks.
Skull and Shark doesn't, it's much more varied and cinematic.
>>51838191
Mega Drive's 198X AD
>>51836867
How can it be faux-retro if it succeeds in recreating the aesthetic of a previous era?
Jon of the Shred interests me. I appreciate his seamless inclusion of sick guitar riffs and solos into the synth layers.
>there is no retrowave track dedicated to the Puma twins
WHY?
This genre is the epitome of gimmicky. Most Chillwave or Vaporwave is better.
>>51838844
No. For two reasons:
1: chillwave and Vaporwave are boring and sedating whereas retrowave is energizing and intense
2: chillwave and vaporwave are nihilistic and ironic whereas retrowave is genuine
But yeah, it's still gimmicky as fuck.

Fight to the Top is very John Carpenter
>>51838245
>it succeeds in recreating the aesthetic of a previous era?
It's a bit stylistically different from actual music of that era
>>51838557
Their striptease theme is chill as fuck, also I want to see a Tank Police sequel reboot
>>51839103
I really enjoyed Built to Kill. It was obviously his first attempt at doing industrial and I'd like to see him try again.
Generally, retrowave could use a few old-school EBM influences.
>>51838844
They're both variations on the whole retro deal
>>51839130
Well there's New Dominion Tank Police, based on the aborted sequel reboot Dominion Conflict (only one volume out of five planned was done)
haven't watched the OVA, but the manga is by far the best thing Shirow's ever done.
>>51839140
Anything that sounds genuine old school EBM is less synthwave than industrial
>>51839176
Whatever, I just want some cross-pollinization to happen between both scenes
>>51839209
That would be nice.
>>51839175
Seen both, just holding out hope for a newer sequel series at some point. Both the anime and manga are brilliant.
>>51836867
I don't know anything about whatever /mu/ microgenre of the week shit this is supposed to be but, fuck me, that pertubator album was class! ..or whatever the yanks say..radical or whatever
>>51839763
"Radical" hasn't been used since the 80s/maybe early 90s (which makes it more than appropriate for this genre) but hipsters have re-appropriated it in the form of the word "rad"
>>51839763
It's retrowave.
There's that one faggot who thinks it's called outrun because he likes Kavinsky.
it's been going on for a few years now and it never caught on /mu/.
/mu/ hates music that makes you feel cool. /mu/ promotes music that makes you feel like shit.
>>51839838
>>51839763
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNKm3_sfjfE
If this is Retrowave, then what's Synthwave.
>>51839763
It's the genre that autistics who want to be like Drive guy listen to
>>51839933
What Retrowave imitates.
And the genre it's a subgenre of.
>>51839933
Synthwave: Perturbator, Mega Drive, Dynatron, Magic Sword
Retrowave: Miami Nights 1984, Lost Years, Mitch Murder
"Chillwave": Com Truise, Tycho
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sV_Cagi25O8
>>51839838
Kavinsky is the entry-level/gateway artist for the genre
>>51839936
No, these guys limit themselves to Kavinsky because they are the obsessive-compulsive type.
I listen to it because I want to be like Kyle Reese. Which is significantly less autistic.
>>51839978
Uh, no, all of this is retrowave, just with different levels of hardness and thematic focuses.
>>51839763
Not every microgenre/gimmick genre emerged on /mu/. However, /mu/ is conceited enough to think that they invented Witch House as a meme (Though Witch House escaped the meme cage of /mu/ long ago and is now in the hands of Bauhaus-listening Anne Rice fans)
>>51839933
an actual genre from the 80s more often called minimal wave
>>51840043
Chillwave is too soft
Com Truise has a nice stage setup though.

muh erection.

loving this one
>>51840122
Sportswave is dead, we D'zoot now.
I consider this as one of my most favorite albums of the genre
Unlike the miami inspired stuff that clutters the genre, the is more east-coast early 90s suburb type
>>51840140
I didn't say imitate him, I said be like him.
>>51840087
Com Truise was so fucking high when I saw him live he literally played that very song three times in a row.
But yeah, cool stage setup with the glowing pentagon shit. Had a very Beyond the Black Rainbow feel.
>>51840143
it sounds and looks like a vaporwavefag trying to make retrowave based on the assumption that it's supposed to be a joke.
When people compare synthwave/retrowave to 80s music I have to laugh. It's like, have you ever heard old-school synthpop (not to be confused with futurepop, which is also sometimes called synthpop)? Old-school New Wave? Italo Disco?
Because "retrowave"/"synthwave" sounds nothing like it.
>>51840122
Drive was actually pretty fun, even if it did have the feel of a short film a student might have made for a BFA project. Refn lost most viewers with Only God Forgives, though. I actually kind of liked it. It wasn't Drive 2, but it was wonderfully gritty, bloody and tense. Hoping his next film Neon Demon is going to be good.
>>51840257
Well if it was the exact same shit it wouldn't deserve to have a different name.
It borrows from many sources, including movie scores and vidya music, and is made on recent synths, so obviously it's not gonna sound the same. But the atmosphere is there and that's what matters.
>>51840257
Man, I'm lurking /m/ these 2 days for someone to recommend me some italo and synthpop stuff. halp
>>51838157
>I don't like Kavinsky because he's popular
>>51840504
No, actually I don't like Kavinsky because his stuff is soporific and includes raps.

I don't care, it's pretty rad.
>>51840527
Literally one of his songs has a rap on it, wtf

>>51840732
How can I say that... They suck. But if they sucked just a little less, they'd be the greatest thing ever to happen to music.
Everything is there: catchy synth bass lines, rad guitar riffs, motorik drum beats, reverb-heavy glam rock vocals, a rockabilly groove, loops and distortions, a strong visual identity and cyberpunk aesthetic, trashy and provocative lyrics that mix sci-fi, provocativeness and social commentary without any reason.
Everything is there.
But somehow it ends up sucking. It's way too bare-bones and repetitive. Just altering the bass lines a little more often and adding a second guitarist/synth player would have sufficed to make it great.
>>51840780
I remember the trailer for that album
let's dig in
>>51840733
>Nightsatan
>Ninja Apocalypse
One of the best things about retrowave is the names of the projects and songs.
>>51840732
There's a completely random offhand reference to these guys in the Afterschool Special episode "The Day My Kid Went Punk"
>>51840733
that's bordering on dungeon synth
I love it.
GOAT indeed
Anyone else hyped for the new Dance with the Dead ep?
>>51841095
Absolutely. Quite liked their cover of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 theme.
There's a really good Hotline Miami fan film that captures this style perfectly:
