when will the stigma surrounding chiptune go away /mu/?
>>
when someone makes some good chiptune
>>
when neckbears stop liking it

>tfw people avoid entire genres not because they're bad but because unattractive men like them
>>
When chiptune becomes anything but nostalgic wankery shared between neckbeards.
>>
never because it inherently attracts gnarly-ass people and horrible songwriters

but why does chiptune attract the worse people in the world
>>
>>51147269
maybe not the whole album, but there's some in there.

What would you call pale machine then? j-pop?
>>
>>51147365
well, it certainly takes more from shibuya-kei and j-pop than it does of 8-bit sound chips
>>
>>51147270
Because, like pop music, it's music that doesn't require attraction. It's just there. It's an extension of video game music, which was always present their entire childhood, meaning that it requires no effort to discover. It's populated by the lazy and culturally devoid.
>>
vidya music was in my childhood too but that doesn't mean i go out looking for shitty ps1 game midi soundtracks
>>
>>51147494
this argument can be made for everything except certain modern classical/improv and related stuff basically
your point?
>>51147533
do people really have nfc what chiptune is?
>>
>>51147237
follicles under the chin and face

anyway, i'm actually a sucker for things that use either brief, unexpected pieces of chip-like sound (flylo does this a lot) or use heavy distortion on chiptune style synths (like vanishes), just not "straight" chiptune, no matter how virtuoso or complicated or whatever.

>>51147533
well, heads up, because faux-ps1 OST vaporwave is probably going to be the new chiptune for the next 10 years

For me chiptunes are not vidya music or nostalgia, just a different kind of "synth" that if you had spent time with games in your youth, they are more familiar to you than others, so you "understand" the sound better.

Also what do you think about the demoscene tracker music? Pick related, one of my favorite albums:
http://bleepstreet.bandcamp.com/album/a-for-amiga

What about chiptunes+real instruments, I'm not talking about anamanaguchi, but more like this:

And finally, check out ubiktune's releases:

Saving this thread. Chip music is one in the handful of genres that I feel doesn't get enough love. There's an amazing amount of good stuff out there if you just look for it. Same goes for any other genre, really. It makes me sad when I see people equate chip = vgm and claim only neckbeards and manchildren listen to it out of nostalgia.

I really wasn't expecting this at all, but I always thought anamanaguchi would be the first to get their shit in some advertising commercial.
I might actually like it more if the lyrics weren't so shit. however. Why couldn't they just keep making shit like Power Supply? Flora Fauna was a damn good jam.

Some of my personal favorites:

Pretty much his entire discography is great. He also has a folk project which is pretty nice too.

http://freemusicarchive.org/music/The_J_Arthur_Keenes_Band/Pamplemousse/
A rad mix of chip/pop. The vocals and guitar/synths mix really well with whatever chip setup they have. Check out Computer Savvy if you want more.

http://an0va.bandcamp.com/album/ego-depletion
A really solid album done mostly with LSDJ and two DMGs. The Id Suite also has some cool experimental shit if you're willing to drop a few bucks.

Makes me feel nostalgic for some reason. Good for getting maximum comfy/chilling.

>What about chiptunes+real instruments
Check out Pastoral I mang. The acoustics come in a bit late for my taste, but it builds up nicely.
Kplecraft also has really interesting instrumentation. They do a bit of goa and other arrangements. A search should bring you right to their site. There might be free downloads on Mulit-Boxer and L 012. I know you can get it on 8bitpeoples as well.
Realm of Mind has a good chip/jazz/metal feel to it. They're pretty good overall.

I really don't think good chip/rap exists. I've tried looking but came up empty many times.

I bet. I really need to try to go to some gigs sometime. I don't want to miss out on these cool performances for forever. There's not much of a chipscene where I live though.

>>51149319
Haven't listened to it. What's the album/artist?

Yeah, I can never pay more than like $2 for a digital download.
Maybe he'll be hawking merch at his next show and I'll be able to cop it then.

Alma, Michigan, man. There's a few things sprinkled all around the state, but they're usually in Lansing/Grand Rapids/Detroit. Quite a drive, sadly.
When I finally get competent with LSDJ + acoustic guitar I'm gonna try to find some people to jam with or maybe do some solo projects. I'd like to think that'd I'd be able to stir up a scene around here If I really try. Hopefully I'm not wrong.

It would be streaming quality though. I need that low-def amiga sound as high-def as possible.

Oh boy this chart is shitty. This needs to be updated ASAP.

I like the timbre that chiptune employs but it needs to be paired with softer waves to really bring them out
>>
>>51153047
>smiletron, random, goto80, george and jonathan, dubmood
muh nigga, that's some good shit

is dubmood chiptune though? i would like to help make a chart. Do you think it should be separated in at least 2 categories: chiptunes (as in able to be played in the real console), fakebit (chiptunes + other instruments, more channels than normal)?
>>
>>51153118
them triangle waves man
>>
>>51153047
some classics on there, but Sabrepulse's Chipbreak Wars needs to be tacked on. Something by Fighter X as well.
>>
>>51153576
Depends how far you want to stretch the definition of fakebit. There's so many producers out there nowadays incorporating elements of chiptune into their productions. And I mean you could go crazy fragmenting the list into categories if you wanted to. Just look at what the vaporwave kids are doing.

>>51153721
Yeah I dunno how First Crush ended up in there over Chipbreak Wars.

You're right, just one category is enough. but is tracker/module (sample based) music chiptune?

From your list I can recommend the ones I have listened to and enjoyed: Anamanaguchi, Random, Trash80, Smiletron, George and Jonathan, Nullsleep and 4mat.

Here are some of my favorites, give then a listen, then we can decide which ones to include.
