Just to be clear, TUSoA > TVU&N

Also I can't say because I don't take psychedelics.

Why are you comparing TUSoA to TVU&N? Possibly the largest part of TVU&N is that they had an attitude that was really different to any other rock group of the 1960s, and seemed to be completely far from the lovey, hippy, psychedelic crowd.
>>
>>51097417
Double EP*
That's a little pedantic, considering it was actually released as an LP in the US, and was eventually re-released as an LP.

Probably either Surrealistic Pillow from the Airplane or Grateful Dead self titled. Or Anthem of the Sun from the Dead

idk, it's both experimental underground rock music with a male and female vocalist and string instrument.

I love MMT and it has some of their best songs in there, but I can't help but feel like Pepper's is a superior collection of music.
Now if I Am The Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were on Pepper's, that would be sweet.

The USA's suite after Wooden Wife is fantastic, but TVU&N is just an entire album of songs that could potentially be the greatest rock song ever. And while USA sounds like nothing else of the time, it still has that definitely 60s feel- TVU&N feels like it could have been recorded yesterday.

>>51097822
I'd say they're pretty far on the psych side. They have their blues influences, but I think they're pretty subtle

>>51097830
It definetly has a baroque pop vibe coming of it, which a lot of people associate with psych, but it's not realyl psych.

tame impala is a band i really want to like but they're way too mellow. i want my psych to have some balls on it. i got the live album this year hoping that live recordings would sound more agressive but they're just hazier-sounding.

>>51097750
this is subtle enough to straddle the line but for me it just tips over the edge into psych territory, especially with the untitled track

>>51097373
>not Revolver
gtfo, MMT is a mixed bag that sounds cool but doesn't cohere into an album

Experimental underground rock is an extremely broad genre, if it can even be considered one, and "male and female vocalist with a string instrument" is a really abitrary way to group things.
Also, The USA didn't use any string instruments outside of an electric bass
>>
>>51098143
What about that electric violin?

And fair. The two just strike me as being similar I guess. I've been told I'm also wrong in comparing ITAOTS and The Glow Pt. 2
>>
>>
>>51097904
fucking love them, seen them twice. I would probably call them Dream Pop but as far as I'm concerned that falls under Neo-psychedelia or is at least closely related.

>>51097993 nigga they aren't
>masquerading
they know they make pop, and openly state it.
Their older EP and demos (found on fan-made b-sides and rarities compilation, or youtube) is more solid psychedelic rock if you prefer that.

The "I want to..." got me expecting some three measure long scream or something, but instead I just sort of got 'AH YA AHHHHHH' then it was gone and the song sort of cooled off. It sounded great at first and actually got my blood pumping, but after I listened to When The Music's Over and heard "We want the world and we want it..." part, Morrison blew my mind in a way that he didn't on their debut. Though debut has a lot more standout tracks than Strange Days, it delivers way more with the climax than S/T.
>>51098166
One instrument is barely enough to relate two albums. I don't quite fault you for comparing the two groups, but they are barely similar. The Velvet Underground are so far away from any group from the 1960s that trying to make comparisons to other bands of the time just doesn't make much sense.

Here's another all time favorite album. Pop blended seamlessly with 'harsher' music.
>>
>>51098249
It might just be TVU needing more listens on my part.

Also, I liked Yerself Is Steam a little better.

>>
>>51098279
>It might just be TVU needing more listens on my part.
It's pretty easy to get the idea with two or three. Early The Velvet Underground isn't really complex or layered music that requires a lot of listens to understand, but an idea of the sound that they were going for can require a lot of listening. Check out their early demos, different takes, early bootlegs, and interviews if you want to get a good idea of what they were about.

>>
>>51098203
fair enough. it's true i remember reading some kevin parker interview in which he mentioned some top 40 pop artists as influences. i guess it's the way that they're marketed and publicised by the music press that made me say "masquerading as". it's not my cup of tea, that's all. i think pond are a far more interesting band, for instance.
>>
>>51098302

Pond are fantastic, I've seen them once now (one of the very few perks of living in Perth, Pond and Tame Impala's hometown) and they were awesome
