909 is cool, but the 808 is so versatile

909 sounds out of place if you're not making a techno or a house record

909 drums cut through the mix so much. sometimes its perfect and amazing, sometimes it doesn't work at all

>>50388821
I know this is just edgy b8 shitposting, but no one with half a brain ever used them as though they were really a substitute for real drums. They're their own distinct instrument.
>>
except for ya know, the real thing? so much more subtle tweaking and character
>>
>>50388873
If you hear people using it outside the context of house/techno, though (especially before it got really popular), you may realize that it's a lot more flexible than its typical uses imply. I think it's largely considered genre-specific because it wasn't used all that much became identified with house and techno.

I would say a Tempest or a Elektron Drum machine would beat out an 808 any day. The 808 is an icon though.

Not really sure what you're going for here. Yeah I know Big Black used a TR-606 and Drumulator...
>>
>>50390394
I like the Yamaha RY-30, but probably you should just use software unless you have something really specific in mind...
>>
>>50390554
>but no one with half a brain ever used them as though they were really a substitute for real drums
Big Black did
>>
>1000 years before 3014
>buying drum machines
Why
>>
>>50390781
I don't really agree. The Drumulator was deliberately programmed to be super aggressive in a way that a real drummer wouldn't play. I think I remember reading an Albini interview where he said he liked that he could emphasize all the bass drum hits rather than just the downbeats. They wanted something that sounded like a jackhammer, not ersatz "realistic drumming". So they were aware of and deliberately exploited the unique qualities of a drum machine.

they sound way too low bit digitaly for me, same as the kick on the 707, but everything sounds like that
>>
>not synthesizing your own drums

>>
>>50391611
naw, i do that too. found sound as well. all are good options
>>
>>50391611
but layering sounds is just so much easier to get the desired effect

i like to layer a lot of x0x drum sounds together, the attack of an 808 kick and the tail of a 606 usually work nicely
>>
>>50391458
Don't know how to really torrent and broke. Thanks though
>>
>>50391733
you can still layer when you make your own sounds, but yes, your way is fine too
>>
I got like 6000 drums from a link on warbeats. Comes with 808 909 lm1 all of that shit. Its nice but I don't have any GODDAM INSTRUMENTS!!

This ain't a drum machine for pussies.
>>
>>50391611
Synthesized drums were actually a lot more distinctive and interesting than the 808 even in the analog days. And I don't really mean the Simmons SDS-5; modular synth drums and stuff like the ult-sound DS-4 (pictured) had a lot more character... They're not generally as good for metallic hihats, handclaps, etc. though.
>>
>>50393237
I've made some pretty wicked drums using a piezo sensor under a rubber pad, and a modular synth.
