morphing amens, always sampled with no sequencing. bass line is often completely independent of drum pattern. the chopping is more "sloppy" (i.e. syncopated) due to being done with magnetic tape. Lots of Rave/Hardcore, Reggae, Hip Hop, and Jazz influence.

an attempt to mimic jungle with digital sequencing. often more looping breaks and a combination of sampled and synthesized sound. bass line almost always derived from drum pattern (digital sequencing, again). Stripped jungle of reggae influence.
Rather than putting delibrate focus on the bass and the breaks, dnb tunes often gave air time to synth textures and such. melody and composition were starting to become something people looked for. Went into darker, more distorted directions.
