pretty much, but its history stems from VK (Visual Kei, or Visual Style) which is best described as androgynous glam rock.

nowadays, there are wide variety of J-Rock styles. Neo-VK is current generation trying to emulate the previous gen. most current bands are best described as post-hardcore.

OP Pic is Dir en grey, the most well-known J-Rock band. They used to be VK, but seeking worldwide popularity has become more western in its style.

Saku was voted the No. 1 video of the year on the MTV2 show Headbanger's Ball in 2006. Here's the vid to give an example of aforementioned band during that time. (They switch styles a lot.)

L'Arc en Ciel is another popular J-Rock band due to consistent chart-topping singles. /a/ knows them well due to their numerous Anime OPs and EDs.

>Dir en grey
Dir en grey is fucking terrible. Stick to your shitty weeaboo boards and fuck off.
>>
>>50177318
what makes you think they're terrible? im curious to know your opinion!
>>
>>50177318
also, do weeaboos really latch onto deg that much? ppl i run into at concerts really seems to be more hot topic fags than anything else nowadays.
>>
>>50177445

it's this dynamic that's hard to describe:

It's largely populated by females that love them from their old days and idolize the members, a lot more than the actual music. If you talk to one of these fans about the music there's only 2 things they can (honestly) tell you: 1. which their favorite member is (99% of the time it's Kyo, the vocalist) or 2. The feels they have with a particular song and how it saved their lives.

Then you have the hot topic-tier fans that are just there because they caught onto the band in 2008, and that about rounds out the entire fanbase. i used to go to their shows; but the audience was more focused on their placement in the crowd in relation to the band, and a conformist "stand still and stare at the band" attitude during the performance. They play fucking metal, and fans get butthurt when you try to start a pit.

why are J-rock guys so much uglier than K-pop boys?

I don't support or listen to visual kei/"J-rock" music in any way. Most of the bands in that whole 'scene' are full of naive, low-class dropouts who just wanted to be rockstars and ended up in a really fucked up contract because it was either be in a VK group or flip burgers. Their entire lives are run by a record label, whether that's what they want or not. Sometimes they have to share Japanese-tier tiny apartments with 3 other guys. It's so depressing.

When it comes to Japanese music, though; I like Number Girl the most. One of my favorite bands of all time. They're super underrated on /mu/. I'd happily exchange all of the Midori discussion for NG discussion.

Those guys did the best soundtrack to one of my favorite films of all time. Didn't really like the songs that are outside of the soundtrack though. Too "rockabilly" for me. Can understand the appeal though.

9mm Parabellum are also pretty great. I liked their first few releases, kind of stopped following them around their third album though.
