I was thinking the same, Adebisi near Hella. Also, make Sajjanu a combination of Yowie and YS!'s Critical Meat.
Hella + Don Cab = Grand Ulena
More Grand Ulena = Planets
More Grand Ulena but not as heavy? = Ahleuchatistas
Grand Ulena but crazier? = Yowie
Want to check Yowie's Prototype? = Malade de Souci
Malade de Souci/Yowie, but Metal? = Orthrelm
>>49902482
isn't emo more after the feel of what it's like being an american growing up in the suburbs though?

if you want something similar but different to the mars volta then check out the sound of animals fighting and triclops! as a huge mars volta these are the only 2 bands that i have come across so far that sound similar but very different. they are what i am love about modern prog rock.
believe me, i have probably listened to everything suppossedly similar to tmv and i think most of it is just really uninteresting.

What? Did you even listened to Sing to God or On Land and In The Sea?
I'm not a big fan of Mars Volta though. I know what parts are supposed to make you feel, but for some reason those do nothing. That's a pretty awful feeling, so I won't be listening to them until some months mroe (maybe even years), until my mentality has changed, because I know they are amazing. But I can still try those you mentioned first.
>just generally looking for emotional shit in the direction of tmv/bright eyes/ neutral milk hotel/ modest mouse/ arcade fire/ radiohead.

>>49902947

not even with their buildups?
when you listen to cygnus..vismund cygnus you have this weird beginning that i honestly didnt like the first times i listened to it but after 4 minutes the song changes completely, goes into near complete silence and then the guitar starts playing and it's getting more and more intense until after a few minutes the lyrics kick in. incredible part, even if they build a few of their songs this way.
but yeah the mars volta is not for everyone and that's ok.
less heavy and very emotional:

Is there a Nu Disco chart?

>>49899573
I think that, while there's some good shit there, you're being a bit too eclectic for most people. Essential prog should always be Yes, Genesis, Floyd etc with a handful of extra shit, this one seems to be mostly avant-prog. Maybe do a chart for that stuff since you seem to listen to a lot of that?
>>49902942
Actually that could fit. Mew are one of my favourite bands ever so I probably should. I prefer Frengers by miles but Glass Handed Kites has the most amount of prog
>>49902950
Hey whoever you are
>>49903019
That album has possibly the best choruses ever.
>>49902706

>>49903107
Nope. I will listen to them again eventually though.
You probably listened to A Little Man, because those two albums I mentioned are heavy (both in loudness and in things going on at once)
>>49903277
The thing with adding Yes, Genesis, etc is that everybody knows about them, and adding them to an essential chart is obvious. I will add them anyways in the next version though.
The instrumental section is filled with math rock/avant prog, that's true. But in the other sections it's about putting some original stuff, and the stuff labeled as Prog Rock is usually the same stuff as the Big 4 (or 5, 6, idk) of Prog, so that's why there's more avant-prog. But most of those aren't really that inaccessible as the genre name suggests.
>>49903709
You are welcome!
Also, if you want you can add Rich Woodson's Ellipsis as "Yowie but with Jazz instrumentation", and Cheval de Frise as "Yowie but with acoustic guitars"
>>49903810
>The thing with adding Yes, Genesis, etc is that everybody knows about them, and adding them to an essential chart is obvious
I get that, but isn't that like the point of essentials chart? That they're essential?
Maybe suggest that this is like a further listening chart, or it's a bunch of lesser known but unique albums, because I like to think I know my prog but I can only name 2/3rds of the ones on there.
>>49903957
Yeah, but the thing I'm trying to avoid is that /mu/ only listens to the same prog bands all the time. Will add them anyways, but give them the same space as every otehr album.

Most of the ones I recognise are from trawling genre charts on ProgArchives and RYM, that area isn't my specialty and I probably couldn't list much that you wouldn't know. One that I feel could be there is Taal's Skymind - I loved how it felt like a modern classical album done entirely with standard prog instrumentation.

>I'm not sure doing a column for each decade is really necessary, since we know prog isn't really evenly distributed over time
Except that's fucking wrong. My personal preference or Prog, when it comes to decades is like this
00 > 90 > 70 > 80 > 10
>>49909984
The idea of adding decades was to convince people that Modern Prog is still good and original.
Yeah, I like the idea of that chart, but the problem is choosing the right subgenres. Do you think anything should be changed regarding this?
>>49910436
Yeah I get that, I also prefer modern prog, but it's just that you only get to pick one from each decade, whereas with general, you can pick the best ones. You can still put modern albums in there
It's not bad, but I think "rock" is way too broad. The ProgArchives subgenres are a bit odd, but they're pretty good for stuff like this - there should be at least a column for symphonic and one for non-symphonic in terms of classic prog. Also I'm not sure if instrumental should be its own - you can get instrumental albums in a range of subgenres
>>49910660
I like almost all of those albums equally though.
Yeah, I was thinking about changing Rock for Symphonic, or something like that. The thing is that Modern Prog seems to be just revivalist stuff (but maybe I'm missing something).
And yeah, instrumental was another odd one. I like the idea, but I find it somehow fitting.
Thanks for your suggestions!

>>49910837
>The thing is that Modern Prog seems to be just revivalist stuff (but maybe I'm missing something).
Nah I wouldn't say that. Although that really depends if you call this >>49902641 sort of stuff prog (some don't, hence why I'm pushing 'post-prog' as a name). I can't fucking stand bands like Transatlantic and the Flower Kings, most of my favourite modern bands are semi-metal ones like PT or Riverside and the post-prog ones

Shit, meant Modern Symphonic Prog.
Prog Rock isn't about about being original though. The definition of Prog Rock, as I see it, would be something like this
>Rock with multisectional song structures and unusual time signatures, instruments, melodies, and chord progressions
That's the only thing that all Prog bands have in common and that differenced them to other rock genres from the beginnings of Prog.

I know the Adult-swim one does, but I've only heard of the Toonami one.

That sure would be one patrish dad. I only know one dad that listens to Blue Cheer and two that listen to the Stooges, and none that listen to Shinki Chen, Blues Creation, Osamu Kitajima, Death, or Nazareth.
Also: Rush, Queen, Iron Butterfly, and Foghat are irredeemable horseshit.
