William Onyeabor studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms music label and to set up a music and film production studio. This fantastic album of Brazilian music finds Jorge Ben at the high point of his soulful and funky best. The feel is still very acoustic, but there are definitely more electric instruments here than on his earlier works. And the songs are excellent. Both "Fio Maravilha" and "Caramba!" were included in David Byrne's classic Beleza Tropical: Brazil Classics 1 compilation (the CD that got me into Brazilian pop music). But my favorite is "Taj Mahal," an incredible groove with simple lyrics that pay tribute to the well known blues singer. Every track is great, though. This is my absolute favorite album of Brazilian music.
