>Friends say the Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time

>Tfw they say "they must have made this crap when their brains were fried on all those drugs lol"

Don't confuse this with a wrong generatun thread. Just a pleb stories general.

There's no way they don't know helter skelter or a day in the life. You're probably 12 years old OP.

at the very least, after making 7 albums he's at least trying to use actual instruments in his music now.

that's literally what he said, "this new album is gonna be the one where I start using actual instruments". all his music has just been made in FL studio or some shit for the past 9 years while sampling old noise/industrial albums. I'm not refuting your argument because ITAOTS has been discussed and analyzed and critiqued to death here.

If you want to know why people like it, listen to it more than fucking three times, or read some reviews on it, because /mu/ is far from the only place that loves it.

Nah, I mean most of their stuff. Mr. Blue Sky is good, but I also like 'Telephone Lines', 'The Diary of Horace Wimp', 'Sweet Talking Woman', and 'Xanadu'

I live in Florida. Here's how this conversation would go here.

>What's your favorite Smiths album
>Who's that?
>I'ts a British pop band that was really big in this genre called jangle pop.
>(feigning interest) hm that's intersting! (changes subject)

Depending on the level of ignorance It could even progress into me being called a faggot liberal. Count your lucky stars you live in a place where alt bands are widely known. You could have to deal with this:

Wow. So apparently everyone who doesn't like country is a hipster
>>

>Country music is a pretty standard life soundtrack if you live in the South or any rural area, but if you live in a city, especially a super liberal, quinoa-eating, Ralph-Nader-voting, Arcade-Fire-worshiping one (ahem, Portland), being a country fan can be pretty lonely. In fact, when I lived in Portland, I was convinced I hated country until a couple of my friends basically forced me to listen to it. Now I live in Nashville. Coincidence? Kind of. Mostly.

Beatles weren't "pleb" (funny music meemee teehee)

they certainly were pop though and a lot less influential than people give them credit for. They are kind of like the kanye west of the art rock and mainstream rock world. They married the two scenes really solidly unlike any other act could and with sgt peppers introduced psychedelia to a much wider audience.

Think of everything that gets called hipster and why it does. Used to be a bunch of spike jonze watching pseudo-intellectuals working on their next novel that could be called that. Now it's anyone casually invested in anything not mass produced or marketed. I work at a Starbucks and this shit makes me want to kill myself (aside from working at starbucks.)
>>

I don't give a fuck.

They make music that I like, I can listen to most of their albums all the way through and enjoy them, their songs are musically complex yet still catchy, and their production is really fucking good.

That constitutes a great fucking band to me, when Kanye writes a catchy song in 12/3 times that goes through three key changes lemme know.

Then shouldn't you listen exclusively to math rock then? or better yet harsh noise? Anything that evades music theory completely?

>>
>>48973543
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq0srF5ugow

here you go.
>>
>>48973944
Never said that.

My understanding of quality is if I like something. There are a few (very few) math rock bands I can listen to, hash noise is crazy if I'm tripping balls.

I like the beatles, I admire their genuis and complex yet organic sounding music. I don't only like it because it's complex, I'll have a great day listening to the ramones.

If I like a song, I like it. If it's genius, I'll respect it for that, if it's bare-bones and stupid, I'll admire it for that.

Music is music man, you like it or you don't, but comparing the Beatles to Kanye is fucking dumb.

I'm saying that the Beatles are usually overrated by their fans and underrated by their naysayers, but that's just my opinion.
>>
>>48974142
So you are saying that Kanye didn't use pop and experimental elements in his last two albums? Or that The Beatles didn't? Or that both don't have popular and critical acclaim?

or are you just saying talking about it is dumb because if it's that, you came to the wrong place to think that.
>>
>>48973973
>>48973850
>objectively best

That's an oxymoron. Best is fucking personal opinion you pleb pieces of human garbage.

Why do humans need to convince everyone that their favorite is best. If you want to argue something is "best" you need to be able to demonstrably test it. There can be a best car, there can be a best computer, but there can't be a best song, as there are no tools to measure how enjoyable a piece of fucking sound is you whores.
>>
>>48974218
Kayne can't even play an instrument.

Comparing Kayne to the beatles is dumb becuase kayne fucking sucks.
>>
>>48973793
>their songs are musically complex
good b8 m8
>>
>>48974218
Experimental is a buzzword.
>>
>>48974142
>>48974218

I mean, at some stage after listening to loads of music you're just going to listen to what you like, right? Taste is subjective, and just because I like one album over another does not mean I'm a pleb, as long as it comes from a place of honesty and having listened to everything else as well.

I'm completely entry-level having listened to just a good bit of alternative rock my whole life. I'm listening to the first hip-hop/electronic music I ever really have in my life right now. Complete entry level stuff.

Do I just keep going and listening to stuff until I can make my own mind up about it? Do I just keep trying new things and persevere? Right now, I like certain things I'm hearing but some of you might consider those opinions help me.

How do I listen to new music man?

I try not to even do that because I hate thinking I'm some zeitgeist of musically knowledge but yeah that too. You just simply recommend shit it and people turn their nose up at you.
>>
I'm not even that patrician, I'm very entry-level with most stuff and I rarely venture outside my favorite genres, and I don't get out to a lot of different places as often as "normal" people, but damn I have never met anyone with the level of legitimate interest in music as anyone from this site.

Some people I know are better than others, I mean my best friend will at least listen to full albums and give things a chance, but everyone else is either a radio/top 40 drone, an obnoxious EDM fag, or a person who is super into "metal" such as Slipknot, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold etc., and they all use 3-dollar earbuds (except for the EDM guy who uses Beats, lol).

I'm not even trying to be pretentious, I don't act like a douche about it to people, and I will gladly admit that my tastes are very narrow and entry-level, but I just wish I could meet one fellow /mu/tant IRL (who isn't an obnoxious shitposter anyways).
>>
>>48974837
The way I try to turn people on to critical listening is reccomending bands that are poppy but lend themselfs to "im such a hispter"-types. from there I just try to introduce them to more and more experimental stuff.

tfw you are a sociopath and treat everyone like children :(

Man, it can't be that hard for you guys to find people who actually like music, right? I'm not even in a huge city or anything, but I still managed to find a group of friends who go to noise shows and explore music beyond what's p4k hyped. I'm the pleb one of them
>>
>>48966346
>ending a friendship over musical taste
>>
>>48975567
I only know a few people with p4k taste which I don't mind. Anything weirder than p4k they wouldn't like.
>>
>>48974315
If you listen to what you like, then you have taste. Ain't nothing wrong with that. However, branching out into the genres and types of music you don't usually lean towards is important for understanding music as a whole, and being able to discern what bands in those genres are "good" or "bad", and why. Actual reasons why. Not "oh man these guys are chill" or "dude this beat is heavy". Artists that actually do interesting things instrumentally or play with themes not often touched upon are the type of artists who /my/ can at least have a decent convo about.

P.s. If you like alternative rock, try animal collective. You'll get that recommendation a lot.

I feel this on a spiritual level anon

I s2g I'm so pleb and I pretty much only listen to the canon albums of the genres I'm interested in but holy fuck there is nobody with half-decent music taste anywhere near me and I just wanna find one cool friend who I'll be able to share music and movies with before I graduate high school

pleb quotes that I experienced irl during my 8th grade black metal phase:

>regular swagfag girl asks to see my music
>looks through black metal playlists
>"it's just a bunch of black and white covers"
>"yeah it's black metal"
>"oh cool! what's your favorite Metallica band?"

and another:

>qt3.1415 theater boy asks if I listen to metal
>"yeahh"
>"oh cool so what are your favorite subgenres?"
>talks for like 2 mins straight about death, black, and crust punk bands
>"um im mostly into slip knot and system of a down but I listen to black metal too! Suicide Silence is awesome!"
> me: :'))) dies on the inside
>>
>>48973937

You could at least do your research, idiot
>>
>>48976883

I've never been into metal but I didn't get into music in a "serious" way until last year (which is when I first started coming to /mu/).

When I was a teenager I was the biggest pleb you can imagine, nothing but Skrillex and deadmau5 in high school and radio rap in middle school (I listened to fucking Soulja Boy back then, when Crank Dat was a hit).

I'm 20 now and I'm overwhelmed by how much music has to offer. I have more free time than the average person but I still feel intimidated by the sheer volume of good music to listen to, especially when I like to listen to my favorites over and over and over until I'm sick of them.
