i agree drum and bass has no visual asthetic at all.

most of it is just dancefloor crap anyway even stuff exit records puts out would only make sense in a live setting where snapbacks are present, who in there right mind wants to listen to such garbage or be associated with it.

This is what the lo-fi thing has going for it, they will never be on the same level as us unless they quickly change things.

You can easily apply the same thing to people that listen to grime lol that music is just inexcusable crap for degenerate chav's.

It makes gabba look good.

So Disclosure's Latch is sitting at number 7 on the US charts and Naughty Boy's 2-steppy "La La La" cracked the top 20. The last time a garage single went Top 20 in America was with Daniel Bedengfield in 2002. Is Garage/Deep House going to be the next big thing in the American mainstream?

I have a admittedly limited understanding of the subject, but I'll take a whack since nobody else seems to want to step to the plate.

In short, it's been a confluence of economic realities, social pressure, and the culture shock of 9/11 in America. That sound you reference, black house, got started in Detroit - now the poster child for everything rusty and midwestern. The reality is the city basically became a warzone in the past ~decade, and that's led to a huge diaspora of the social and cultural groups that generated that sound. You can find them in Chicago, New York, etc. but the culture around music has undergone a huge shift that we're all witnessing. Likely means we'll never see that sort of thing quite like we did in the 90s. The other issue was a combination of the scare-the-mums-acid-house wave that went through right before 2000. There was a pretty major series of crackdowns on that scene that really stifled a lot of the burgeoning avenues for electronic musicians to get exposed - they sure as hell weren't getting airtime in '98, back before the internet could drive exposure like it does now. Once 9/11 hit, the subsequent economic shockwaves hurt things even more - and the culture shifted heavily too. America went through some sort of like mass cultural depression, the bouncy upbeat shit that house and D&B were pushing didn't jive with how people were feeling. We fell into that pit of quiet indie rock despair. Obviously music never stopped but there seems to be a distinct lack of major releases all the way into ~2005 when it comes to American electronic stuff. Really, as much as we (rightfully) hate him, Skrooblex and The Bad Haircuts sort marked a recent watershed where more strictly electronic stuff has started to penetrate the mainstream here. It'll never be the Year of Drum And Bass again but we're definitely hearing a lot more of that sound leak through in American hip-hop, so who knows.

I just noticed this post and would like to comment, being an oldfag from the midwest.

huckaby/parrish/wade sounds has detroit ties, but is profoundly influenced by chicago. "Lake Shore Drive?"

the thing to remember about house in chicago and to some degree detroit is that there was the traditional stuff, but it was also competing with ghetto house (think dance mania)in chicago and ghettotech (think dj godfather) in detroit.

to some degree we are seeing the output of those same communities in the juke-footwork scene now. the sound simply changed. the warehouse parties that would've been ghetto house parties in 95 have become footwork parties in the early 2000s
>>
>>48729991
I haven't heard much electronic music from the States, but my impression of it is that much of it is pretty sterile and stale. Take musicians like XXYYXX, Skrillex and, if I dare mention, Death Grips have all very boring beats. What's up with that? One would think that music from the land of hip-hop would have more exciting beats.

not the guy you quoted, but there are endless arguments by dudes older than me on whether house technically started in nyc or chicago. also, there were white people too. in chicago for example, bad boy bill mixtapes have to go back to at least mid 1980s

Something slightly different, essentially in the same vein as this >>48731132

Two free releases which are compilations from various radio sets of loads of MCs. Beware, quality gets incredibly shit at points since this is some properly old school pirate radio shit. But if you want an idea of what Grime is really like (Elijah agrees, don't bother him) then listen to these.

Grimetapes - 2003 - Wheel Volume 1
https://mega.co.nz/#!5cpDQK5B!MU7aSYQ7nBoEffm6FBmgf9QPzkm_vhlhLXaoQlJLz20

Grimetapes - 2009 - Wheel Volume 2
https://mega.co.nz/#!hMgVFaqQ!A20qzJOoek7Ib97ZhiJnhFgP2dliTR89H7Cm0faUqSM

And this is the same thing but with just Slew Dem sets/members. I honestly like this more than Slew Dem - Non Stop Working for the most part.

Don't give a particular shit about jungle or pirate radio, but marking all releases before 2000 as "old as shit and irrelevant" is just retarded. Of course I pay attention to present releases, but there's still a lot of value and tons to discover in the old stuff. What kind of idiot fails to see that?

it's interesting how there's so much nostalgia for stuff like hardcore and jungle, and no one listens back to other dance music from that era.

Thoughts on that new Boxcutter EP?
Some of it is real nice (Holoscene) but a little too much is filler.

I liked it, gets a bit too much flak around here for being Young Turks, althought tbh he seems like the type of producer to just start getting guest vocalists over all the tracks of whatever he does next.
I'd like to be proven wrong tho.

This one time I went to Miami Beach, and Ultra was going on. Every mansion/resort/yacht was blasting all of the top 40 EDM shit like deadmouse5 and stuff and it really annoyed me because I prefer fairly obscure experimental bleeps and bloops.

Thank you for reading my short essay.
