Keep it bleep, fellas

BLEEPCHALLENGE

>You have until saturday to produce a song. We are posting here on Saturday primarily, there are those who probably can't post until sunday but the goal was saturday.

>Also, you can't just drop your song link like a SC thread, you have to talk about what you did, what you were going for, cool things you did in the mix. Talk about what you did technically, this is a learning experience. The comments shouldn't be like "Nice" or "Cool song", you either post something constructive or don't post something at all. Either way, there are gonna be anons who read all the technical shit that you post and that's the whole reason we're doing this first anything goes challenge.

Today's 5:32 raw sound design session with the Korg Monotron, no editing but taking out really bad clipping takes. There's even a reese in there, so you can get some interesting things if you chop and sample this.

aw fuck. Well I can't help you directly but I can give you some tips to salvage that monstrosity.

Let me ask you, how are the drums dividing on those two tracks?

How is the guitar recorded? Direct or from the amp micced up?

Do you have the Waves Ultrabass plugin? Because it helps with the low end on bass, maybe there is some logic equivalent?

I'd be more help if you were using Live :(

there are, but every primary instrument (guitar, vocals, guitar synth pad) have a really prominent range from like 400-~3k. the guitar will sometimes go a little higher but if i bring up anything higher it just doesn't sound natural cus the frequencies just aren't there.

I overdubbed all of it through a tascam mk144 interface so it's just bad, i didn't know what i was doing, and didn't care. i'm also doing it for free and have put at least 120 hours into these songs and i'm like halfway done

I've found out why I have so much trouble writing music. In my DAW, I'm building music visually, putting note after note of music into a loop with my mouse. I default to focusing more on the visual steps rather than the audio.

Didn't know if i should post it here since /bleep/ was an absolute shithole for the few generals i spent there, but here goes.

What are some ways of manipulating samples and found sounds into interesting things?
So far I've been playing around with paulstretch, pitch shifting and time stretching, EQing and layering but where do you go from there?

I found that some of the plugins i've (illegally) downloaded and others included in my DAW don't really manipulate the source of the sound itself, but simply masks it with it's own distinct sound. Fully realized now that i do not want my (music) to be various plugins with preset settings.

I've been busy with what i mentioned first and just messing around with those things while recording the process in real-time does already give me pretty good varied results but i'm looking for something more interesting.

I often arrange samples on a timeline and then stretch them using various ablelon live plug ins. I also re-arrange them into other things.

I often don't use a "sampler" per se. But I use ableton Live clip editing often by cutting them up, layering them over each other, pitching them, stretching them beyond recognition, filtering, resampling.

The list goes on forever really.

I have no experience with DAWs but I'd load that sample into my Akai 2000 and chop it, assign several sections of it to different ranges of the keyboard, tune it, and play some solo part in the same key as whatever I'm making. Also playing around with the glitchy timestretch, horrible sample rates and filters is always fun.

Ableton Live has a hidden feature where you can display every plugin on each channel strip, like in other DAWs such as Logic or Pro Tools.

How to enable the option:
Create an Options.txt file in plain text
The file must say -ShowDeviceSlots
Place Options.txt in the most recent version of Live’s Preferences directory

Mac:
/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live x.x/

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Ableton\Live x.x\Preferences\

Newer Windows:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live x.x\Preferences\

Now, when you start Live you will notice there is a new icon in the Live view. Click it and each plugin on each channel strip should appear.

Idk if anyone remembers or cares, but I offered $300 for the CP-70, he countered $350.

TR-8 and a Mini/Microbrute depending on your wants/price range
>>
>>48527383
Microbrute. But for the drum machine there really is not much in the way of analogue machines that people can actually afford apart from the Volva Beats, but the snare is retarded sounding. There is an extremely easy mod to fix that, but I don't know if you'd be prepared for that.

The Rhythm Wolf is coming out soon I think, but it sounds so dull and boring that I wouldn't be interested. Extremely cheap, though.

The TR-8 is digital. No sense in modding it really.
>>
>>48527743
No i meant the snare issue with the volca.
>>
>>48527712
Volcas are easy to mod IMO
>>
>>48527712
the TR-8 is basically a customized midi controller no one's going to bother modding it

>>48527826
it's a fairly simple fix, just the circuitry inside the volcas is borderline microscopic and will require previous experience with soldering if you don't want to fry your kit
>>
>>48527826
how much soldering have you done before?

>>48527846

TR-8 is a bit more than a MIDI controller once you get into it. i understand if youre not into it, but feel like thats selling it way short for what it is.
>>
>>48527907
That guy is really unclear in that video, it's hard to tell which pads to soldier to.

Also, my music production setup involves no permanently plugged in cables. Don't generalize.
>>
>>48527962
yeah it's a nice machine and you get way more bang for your buck than you would for throwing down $3k+ on an 808, I was just clarifying that no one's gonna mod it

>>

>>
>>48528157

go Volca. for the price, not a lot out there really.
>>
>>48527967
ok
>>
>>48528372
Volca is your only realistic choice.
>>
>>48528118
Some people like the volca beats as is and some people don't, but I can say with strong certainty that the rhythm wolf is (or will be) a pile of shit.

I personally have owned a volca beats for months now and have been using it without the snare fix. I'm setting up to mod it soon because I'm tired of having a drum machine without a snare, but honestly it's a good little box for the price.

If you want a good sort of 'all in one' drum machine for cheap you should also check out all the digital drum machines that were pumped out from like '87 to '04 or so. You can usually get a fully functioning unit for $75-$100 and they have much more memory than analogue kits. That being said you're going to have to do research for yourself to make sure that you're investing in a box that A) actually sounds good (since they're sample-based there isn't that much customization on the cheaper ones) B) will actually work and doesn't run the risk of the internal battery cutting out or the pads dying or anything, and C) actually makes sense, as the 90's were a golden era for digital synths with tiny screens and tons of menu diving

I started off messing around with several of the Boss Dr Rhythm models and it was definitely a dirt-cheap way to get into the game
>>
>>48528511
ANOTHER NOTE

Using a vintage (meaning more than 10 years old in this case) digital drum machine is basically like using a way more complicated and outdated version of Garageband with basically the same final product. I would really only recommend it if you desperately want a physical machine but can't afford to go any higher than ~$80

>>
>>48530665
Thanks for the input. On a semi related note, if I really would like a hardware synth, what would be the best choice if I'm looking for something affordable and large-ish (I was looking at the microbrute but I would want to have more than just two octaves). Or does such a thing exist without spending a shitton of money?
>>
>>48530879
In that price range, you're looking at a tradeoff between sound, keys, and programmability. You can always plug a midi keyboard into the microbrute.

yes this is important. i mean, depending on your budget it's always hard to determine what you need. people make good shit without an acoustically treated room though, so you shouldn't wait for you room to get treated before you make stuff.

I didn't see the initial asking price but I applaud that you offered so low. People always seem afraid to dicker and it's silly, that's how you get the best deals. If they say no, who cares? The internet has destroyed the concept of scarcity.

I don't have one but I had access to one for a long time, even acoustic it's a nice piece.
>>
>>48531909
No, that guy is from Wisconsin, where apparently nobody knows what instruments are worth on CL. I'm the one with the Minimoog and the ridiculous amount of cash on it.

>>48531936
Asking price was $400, but I normally go 20% below, I've been rejected on better offers too, but the guy knew how to reciprocate. I hate people who treat CL as buy it now evilbay. I had a chance at a YC-45d combo organ for $500, offered $400 and he flat out declined, like what was he thinking listing a firm price on CL?

As per the piano, I'm excited, I've heard them on recordings, but I have so many ideas I want to try that can't be done with other instruments. Plus it'll be nice to have a piano in the home again.
