what made them so genius music-wise?

heroin and lou's homo tendencies

so their acclaim isnt based on the music at all?

From what I've gathered, not a lot of the musical ideas, like the droning violins in Venus, or the freak out in some of the songs in the second half, had been expressed in western rock at the moment. On top of the experimentation, the songs also had a keen linear quality to them also.
Lou had style as a singer, and I believe the musicianship and the band's chemistry, very organic for 1967, are behemoths to be compared to for among the rock music at the time, and really, up to today.

It's funny to watch people form such stubborn opinions about artists that are still clearly developing. While Claire Boucher has been writing and releasing music as Grimes for quite a while now, each of her releases are their own record and show an artist who's still undoubtedly growing and progressing. If you weren't expecting as significant of a shift in paradigm on Art Angels as Visions was from Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, you surely either hadn't listened to those records or were kidding yourself? The indication that Boucher tossed out a complete record in 2014 should be indication enough that she's still a changing artist. Complaining that Art Angels sounds different that what you were expecting is tantamount to pointing to Visions and saying "this is what Grimes sounds like", and claiming that this record is Boucher "going pop" is like claiming she was somewhere concrete to begin with.
Instead, Art Angels falls short of expectations for reasons besides it being "different" from Boucher's previous work. I'm not going to sit here and complain to you that this album is bad because I like X album better, that's fallacious. Instead, I think that Art Angels doesn't deliver as it should for mostly unrelated reasons, and while I do prefer earlier Grimes albums, I don't like them better because they were different, I like them because they make fewer mistakes than this record does. While I do think that this release's lean towards more easily accessible pop melody hurts it at the end of the day, I don't feel as if Boucher has betrayed me in some way. She can do what she wants, I just didn't think it was that compelling.

My biggest problem with Art Angels is probably one that arises as a result of its complicated conception - I don't think it feels very lived in or complete; it's ironic that the demo of "Realiti" that appears as the CD bonus track seems to me the track on the album that feels the least like a demo. Instead, while production is polished and Grimes' trademark dreaminess that characterised her earliest releases is here given a new 2010s pop sheen, in general I think a lot of the tracks feel more like the nucleus of a bigger idea than a complete one. Her irresistible breakthrough, "Oblivion", was calculatedly simple, brilliant songwriting - to use an example from Art Angels, while I prefer the demo, "Realiti" feels similarly concocted, a song that's been honed from germination to harvest. By contrast, catchy moments on Art Angels are stupidly catchy because they don't have much else going for them - the title track, or "California" are one-trick ponies, songs that haven't been fleshed out beyond their seeds.
You can see it in the number of fragmentary, brief ideas peppered in and out of the record as well. "Scream" is just a chance to show off Aristophanes - imagine how much more interesting having a random verse in Mandarin would feel appearing out of the blue as a break in the middle of an otherwise complete Grimes song? "Laughing and Not Being Normal" is a throwaway intro, one of the only songs that sounds like it sound diametrically opposed to the rest of Art Angels but included anyways. Much of this underdeveloped filler is unsatisfying when we keep in mind how talented of a songwriter Boucher is. I get the sense repeatedly that this record was rushed, that it's Grimes throwing something together in half the time she wanted to have after canning her 2014 release.
