The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved. In a sense, the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply highlight what product the music business wants to make money from.

actually the beatles were very important because they helped alot or artists realize that they are able to write and do their own music without having the label control every aspect of the music, promotion, ect.

Profound.

Not this copypasta again. Rock music is not SUPPOSED to be a serious art form. Only a few daft critics think that.

Music has been frozen in this awful era of meme rap poptamism and refuses to do something new and its been like that for like 5 years. I think we need something refreshing that isnt some ultra nigger booty dance music or white girl slut/feminist pop.
Maybe thats why despacito is big? *shrugs
I think we need a massive shift in the type of music thats popular. I think we need someone to take a risk, i want the top 40 to be like dream pop meets vapor wave, meets shoegaze, i want the top 40 to sound like you fell face first into a water fountain at a mall in the 80's and you can hear the malls music being played over the intercom.
I think this world could be a lot more interesting but people prefer profit over creativity, especially now.

Listen to more music please, if you don't like top 40 don't listen to top 40. I'm sure you are a human living in this 21st century - or at least I hope you are - therefore you have at least a small bit of self-control and respect.
If you don't enjoy something in this era why the fuck are you even listening to it? If you don't like rock climbing for example, just don't go fucking rock climbing. If you don't like pop music, don't fucking listen to pop music.

That image is too badly made to work as bait
>>74956103
You're supposed to greentext those four things and say "oh, this is bait." This is what your average rap fan considers good humor.
I'll start.
>Circa Survive - Juturna
Say what you want about the vocals on the album but the musicianship of the album is so tight.

What the fuck is wrong with you?
Easily in the top 3. I'd still give it to Men At Work, though.
