you ever listen to car seat headerst?

i used to know him on furaffinity, i bought twin fantasy back when it came out for three bucks. remember, when it was donate what you want? i wouldn't given more, but i was broke at the time. i love that album. anyhow, as two lonely queers we were gonna make an album together, but he bailed suddenly claiming he had a "secret crush on me and he was in a committed relationship at the time and he didn't wanna compromise that by working closely with me." i was literally tripping on LSD when i got the note... he coulda just been fucking with me, 'cause my music sucked, or i was too much obviously a white-trash-high-school dropout, and he was a sweater-vest college-bound well to do rich kid... but, maybe he dodged a bullet now, since he's fucking famous, i'm still a stupid junkie. anyhow, i wrote this song a as a semi-diss / i dunno... "i wish we coulda been friends type of thing." anyhow, i figured since he's hot shit here and in the indie music scene, i'd post this. (also, sam ray [one of my musical idols who's helped me thru a lot, wrote a really funny dissertation on will... look it up. it sorta gave me the courage to make this, for better or worse.)

starting to mess around with music production, currently using fl studio 12. have basic knowledge of music theory, played piano for close to ten years now. i looked at some tutorials so I'm fairly comfortable with the interface now but still far from a decent user. where should I go from here? any recommended tutorials or advice on how I should begin experimenting? thanks in advance

Hi mate! Congrats on getting started on your music production journey. Here are a few thoughts I have regarding your situation and music production in general:

1. Ditch FL studio. Far as I know, it's really underpowered compared to most other DAWs. I use Studio One personally, but definitely experiment with other software before settling into FL Studio too much - you may be very pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely recommend Studio One; I've tried all the major DAWs and it seems to have the most fluid workflow by far. I guess it comes down to taste to a degree.

2. What I've found to be the biggest challenge BY FAR when producing (or music in general) is thinking in the larger musical forms that you are working with; 'zooming out', so to speak. Anyone (well, not exactly) can come up with a 4 bar loop of music which is decent, but a real composer understands that every single part of the music is contextually dependent on every OTHER part. It's a delightful balancing act, and understanding this is crucial to writing mature music. If you want to improve in this regard, there's a few things you can do.

First of all, KNOW YOUR THEORY. If you want to paint an incredible painting, you obviously need the paints. You don't need to go all the way through Laitz's Complete Musician do be a proficient producer, but I'd say it's crucial to have at least an intermediate understanding of chord progressions (harmonic movement) and rhythm. The painting allegory continues to be handy here when we move onto APPLYING this knowledge - it's all about practice. The more familiar you become with your scales and keys the more natural it'll be to move between them and relate them to each other. Never stop experimenting - it can get dry if you get caught up on all the technical theory bullshit. Just know your shit, and you'll have much more fun playing around.

Secondly, give yourself opportunities to refine your sense of 'form.' For example, say you've produced a

4 bar thing which you think is decent, and you call it a night (or day, or whatever.) Next time you sit down to produce, DON'T start a new file. Instead, try to write something which LEADS INTO the 4 bar section you've already written. I think you'll get the gist of why this exercise is beneficial, so you can mix it up however you want to. Make it interesting, and most importantly make it FUN! That's why you're doing this - for fun, and fulfillment. This ability to link things together and conceptualize music from a more macroscopic perspective is a skill unto itself, quite separate from the 'zoomed in' process of writing. However, the former will improve very quickly if you focus on it. It's very empowering from a creative perspective to be able to preconceive where you want the music to go.

3. Fucking great that you're a piano player! We pianists are very lucky as we have a tactile AND visual basis for our theory knowledge, and an easy way to experiment and play around with what we've learned. I'd definitely check out Mark Levine's Jazz Theory and Jazz Piano books. Not only do these books grant much theoretical insight, they'll also make you feel much more familiar with your instrument. WORTHWHILE, I GUARANTEE IT.

4. Learn a synth(s)! When I say learn, I mean LEARN THAT SHIT GOOD. Fuck manuals, just play around enough and you'll get a feel for what works and what does what. I'd recommend Serum with 2 thumbs up - it's extremely powerful and versatile. I'd be more than happy to produce a whole track just using serum for the tonal parts (excluding percussion and SFX.) Nothing is more empowering than being able to hear a sound in your head and whip it up in a few minutes with your synth of choice. Serum and Massive are considered some of the strongest on the market, but again I recommend Serum.

Hopefully what I've written is somewhat useful to you! + If you've got any questions, shoot! I'll be around for another hour or something. Cheers.

I am a musician. I make electronic music, run a label, and have been active for over years now. I'm pretty famous in my field, though obviously I can't say who i am. Though my genre is pretty niche by mainstream standards, my tracks have millions of plays on Spotify etc.. I make good money from royalties and have effectively retired now in my 30's. I have a guaranteed income until the day I die and I only continue to make music because it's fun.

However, I had a dawning realisation today. Had I been born 500 years ago, I would probably have been a bard. A fucking bard. The weakest, most pathetic humans who ever existed. I'm not cut out for soldier work and hate being poor, so general farm peasantry just wouldn't cut it for me. Nope, it would have been the bards life for me. Reciting shitty poetry and annoying my patrons with crappy songs, like Ed Sheeren in that latest Game of Thrones episode. I would have probably got laid a fair bit as I'm not ugly and it's easy to manipulate docile wenches with my shitty songs, but apart from that, I'd pretty much be universally despised and ultimately, lead an unfulfilling life.

Why even continue living, now I know the truth about what I am, lads?

Why do I criticise others for their music when I've accepted that music is subjective and music that sounds good is good music.
2 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Because you're criticizing them for flaws that affect your listening experience. For example, some people love dissonance in music but most people do not. If you don't and there's a lot of dissonance in a song, then you would criticize them for that.

Learn your scales; learn proper fretting, picking and muting techniques; practice to a metronome or a drummer so you can lock in with a groove and keep in tempo.

I've been on Linux for years and I've basically had no access to music programs worth a damn.

What should I use to make basic arpeggio tracks, drum tracks, etc?

Or to make it simple, what programs do you use to make music, /mu/?

You had no access to music programs? Really?
There are entire distros dedicated to music production.
Install UbuntuStudio or just get the low-latency kernel and the Ubuntustudio and KXStudio distros. Making your entire operating system into a streamlined DAW via Jackdbus seems "worth a damn" to me.
Programwise you can use Renoise as your non-free centerpiece, Ardour 5 and ZynAddSubFx to produce a lot of nice things.
It's not at all your operating system's fault that you're not a bestselling shillhop producer yet, you're just a lazy ass.
