It hasn't. It just became a meme to claim so. It sounds different, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

The discovery of new sounds and technology at the time made it easy to produce something that sounded "fresh", for the better part of the 80s. It's the type of thing you have in most decades outside of the 80s, only to a lesser extent.

I've watched a lot of his interviews, and I was always fond of him because he's such a staple and icon of underground music especially. But recently I've come to the conclusion that I really don't like his interview style. It can be interesting hearing how his interviewees relate to the items he brings, but I'd rather hear them talk in depth about their ideas on things, rather than just reacting to what Nardwuar is doing. That said, I have noticed that you learn a lot about their personalities based on how they react to Nardwuar - sometimes people are relaxed and funny with him, which makes them more likable. Other times they try really hard to be cool, which just makes them look insecure. Sometimes they're really sweet, which is again likable. Sometimes they're insecure assholes to him, which reveals them as shallow, worthless charlatans (Transplants, Blur).

That's what sets him apart from other interviewers though. What you described about wanting to hear about their ideas is how most interviews go. Narwuar gives a different interview experience by design. You can usually find in depth discussion in almost every other interview, but like you said, Nardwuar gives you an idea of them as a person.
